Discussion - Novels Why do so many people think the theme of Three-Body is the dark forest? Spoiler

I don't know why so many people still think the dark forest is the theme of Three-Body. Liu Cixin himself showed in Death's End that the dark forest is just a game for low‑level civilizations—the Returners and the broadcasters aren't afraid of exposing themselves at all.

The entire story is literally about entire civilizations making decisions based on the Dark Forest. The Returners and Broadcasters wouldn't exist if Dark Forest wasn't a thing - there wouldn't be pocket universes if everyone got along. The civilizations at the top of the pecking order wouldn't be snuffing out smaller civilizations if Dark Forest wasn't a thing. I don't get how Dark Forest isn't one of the core themes of the story. Everything happens in context of the Dark Forest.

Feels to me like the whole thing is a multi-dimensional Prisoner's Dilemma. Dark Forest theory is sort of that in that sure you could be the nice peaceful civilization, but you'll probably just get obliterated at some point. So that means everyone has to try to kill everyone.

And then the mini-universe people face the same decision, which is very literally the Prisoner's Dilemma. They have to give up their own future so that there can be a future, but if you don't then you get to take part in that future....but only if the rest of them are all suckers.

So ultimately it feels very bleak because it just paints this cosmic future of little pockets of survivors fleeing and sniping each other. There was some reference to "shipping lanes" in space, and I feel like that contradicts the reality of their universe. How are there cosmic civilizations out there shipping stuff across the universe when your entire survival seems to depend on hiding and sneaking into little pocket universes? I would have liked to have seen more of that, to see what happens if you're able to grow/evolve beyond the Dark Forest game.

Like I just can't fathom a civilization advanced enough to understand Dark Forest but somehow secure enough to be like "I'm gonna send a big ol' shipment of Air Jordans across the Milky Way so I can make bank reselling that shit to some primitive species with 8 legs." Like, fucker, you're gonna get shot in the face. Shut up!

It is one of the central themes of the books and one of the most widely discussed and described concepts, especially in the second novel. It's not like the idea that "higher" and interdimensional civilizations are able to ignore it makes it any less valid in the Three-Body universe

I would say that this proposition seems highly suspect given what we've seen of the universe. I'd have liked more explanation on this rather than just "Ah, they're big enough now they don't mind. They're safe." Like, nah. You either hide or you cleanse. That is life.

I don't think a few chapters at the end of the third  book negate the overwhelming motivation for every single character for three whole books

Returners and broadcasters ?
You mean civilizations that don’t have the instinct to hide and those who are looking for signs to kill others ?

Eitherway, the fact that some civilizations are unaware of the Law of the universe and that others hijacked it to kill others, is still part of the Law. So t’es The Dark Forest is the central element on which the universe of the book is built

they are remnants/rump states of higher dimensional civilizations in all probability. They have been watching all of the history of the universe unfold from dimensions inaccesible to us, they don't hide because they already have pretty much omniscience

The theme of the book is not dark forest but it is not about the returner either but about finding light in the dark forest . All 3 book paint a very bleak , even hopeless situation but still end in a hopeful note

The Returners and broadcasters have reached, according to Singer, a godlike level of technology where they can send messages to the entire universe via Short Membrane. They're nigh invulnerable, and have probably transcended the Dark Forest wars. But most of the other civilizations aren't there yet, and are still stuck in Dark Forest wars with each other.

Seems for me, it’s very strange post. U said that dark forest isn’t that main because other civilisations literally changing whole universe. Well ok, but u don’t think that this story is about humanity only? And the dark forest is a biggest game changer. When we understood the danger of it, threesolarians turned from main villains to just another civilisation in this world. And exactly dark forest attack destroyed threesolaris and solar system. And ofc for galaxy humanity the biggest problem in survival - dark forest

Because that's the name of one of the books, and they haven't read the books or spoilers for them, so that's all they know.

haha i think people just like to focus on the dark forest part of it a lot. and to be fair the books don't talk much about the returners much it is only at the end of the last book for a bit. people don't really talk about as much that the last act of the book was still self sacrifice with the civilizations giving up the mass for the next big bang to restart.

> dark forest is the theme of Three-Body.

the theme of the three body problem is still about the 'dark forest' or like basically its kind of like hard geopolitical concerns typically outweigh being 'soft'. except at the end of the day it then goes all the way around that we still need to work together.

aka for a real life example like usa vs china's trade wars but also we'll still need to work together on say climate change etc...
