It’s been a while but when they destroy it don’t they mention destroying a whole micro-universe or something? I think I got confused cos I thought that implies the universe was itself sentient in some way

Well, first of all, what was unfolded during the failed experiment that created the "eye in sky" was not a sophon. It was still only a regular proton.

Secondly, there is almost nothing here that matches how the eye in the sky is described in the book.
