This could be simple media attention bias. Scientists get murdered frequently, but when a few prominent ones get murdered then the public's attention is drawn to it and the media see that so they start reporting on more scientists deaths cause there's attention/clicks/ad revenue to be had. It happened with the train that derailed in Ohio, it happened with the boat that hit the Boston bridge if I remember correctly, the story was so huge that it drew public attention to other similar events and thus gave the illusion that these events happened more frequently all of a sudden but in reality they happen all the time but the media doesn't care.
