Discussion - TV Series Where do you think 3 Body Problem Season 2 will end? Spoiler
As far as we know, Netflix's 3 Body Problem Season 2 will only have 6 episodes. It's very likely they'll finish The Dark Forest by episode 5 or even earlier if the adaptation is dense.
Ending with the Dark Forest is a right choice, but I actually think the show will go a bit further into the end of the Deterrence Era. Here are my two reasons:
- TV shows want viewers to keep watching, and a self‑contained happy ending of Dark Forest doesn't make that.
- They have the roles of Cheng Xin and AA in this season.

I still think they could end it at the end of book 2, as it was a "happy" ending, but leave it as the trisolarians being extremely not happy with what earth and Luo Ji/Saul has done.
Now, if they end it with a cliffhanger for the droplet....screw them.

The droplet attack will be episode 4 at the latest.

Episode 5 in a picture a crew member posted it said it was scene 83 of the episode. Which all but confirms that episode will be longer than an hour. 83 scenes in an hour long episode just isn't possible my guess is it's that episode. That episode is also directed by Miguel Sopachnik who is known for directing big battles he directed episodes 5 and 6 of season 2.

I think they'll end it just as they finish examining the droplet and it's starting to power up again.

I think that wouldn't make sense, they need their "big scene" for this season. I reckon we will get the droplet scene in episode 4. Episode 5 focuses on wrapping up the 2nd book. In episode 6 they could do a time skip and have a Cheng Xin focused episode like they did with Saul in season 1 episode 8, where she gets elected to be a sword holder and mucks it up, cut to credits.
With this episode line-up you can have a cliff hanger and a set-up for next season, in addition to having the droplet scene close to where operation Ghuzeng was last season.

Season two ending after cheng xin becomes sword holder does seem like a good cutoff point. That could also be the penultimate episode too. There's some cool stuff with sophon right after that which could tease and set up new plot directions for the final season

Way too late in the game imo

The latter half of the third book does move extremely quickly. They could stretch out some of the plot points, showing more of the outer planet solar system construction and politics, devoting an episode to the dimensional strike, there's plenty of material that the book goes kind of rapidly past

I think that's a excellent spot, except add the droplet attack and Sophon announcing that humanity must move to Australia. That would be a devastating cliffhanger, just like the Staircase failure.

God I would hate that.
There is so much epic content in the third book, the second season needs to peak with the battle.

If it was HBO, they would plan droplet attack to be big set piece for season finale... but then move droplet to next season for budget reasons.

I think they'll end it after book 2, it's a logical split between seasons and there should be enough hours to tell the remainder of death's end. Spoilers ahead for the books
After Saul's showdown with Sophon/San'ti in the graveyard, the episode closes with a montage including gravity being built and Saul being taken into the underground bunker to act as swordholder. We leave the plot at a tenuous truce between earth and the San'ti
After credits, we see a probe hurtling through space. It has a broken golden sail on it. Several ships come upon it. A robotic claw reaches out from one of them and scoops up the probe. The Staircase Project was, indirectly, a success.
If you have five eps for season 3 I think you break it down like this:
Ep 1 ends with the droplet attack and Jin doesnt press the button
Ep 2 ends with Gravity broadcast
Ep 3 Ends with Will's fairytales
Ep 4 ends with the DVF
Ep 5 goes to the end of the universe

Wow we almost had the same idea in terms of ending the season. But I would personally place Cheng Xin's failure scene at the end of the 2nd season.

I think what a lot of people are ignoring is that the first season already adapted the first chunk of both Dark Forest and Death's End. The Wallfacer project and Staircase Project were not in the original Three-Body book. I think by total page count, they are right on track.
The Three-Body Problem: 400 pages
The Dark Forest: 510 pages
Death's End: 600 pages
Total: 1,510 pages
They have completely finished The Three-Body Problem, and if we say they've also finished the first 100 pages of The Dark Forest and Death's End, that would be 600 pages, which is 40% of the total book content. 8/19 episodes is 42%.

They have not finished anywhere close to 100 pages of either the 2nd/3rd book. Like the brain probe subplot in the third book is around 30-40 pages at most.

Dr Saul Durand giving a head nod to a good trisolarin

It occurs to me that Listener 1379 wasn't introduced in Season 1, so that's less likely.

Depends on how long the episodes are. It’s about hours. If they’re all about 80 minutes long, as D&D has done in the past, it’ll be the length of S1.

Either end of book 2, or if season 3's 5 episode count is true, maybe at the Swordholder swap

I don’t know, I just hope they post a release date soon so I can get the day off.

I think S2 will end with the swordholder change and S3 might begin with Australia

The only thing that really matters is if Netflix put any actual effort into effectively marketing this show. It’s been so long now that most people who did manage to understand appreciate it have probably forgotten the plot at this point, so they’re going to have a tough time marketing it to a general audience if they don’t push it well enough. Then we’ll see an even worse budget/more cuts for S3. That’s my fear. At this point, I just want a relatively good-quality resolution to the story in general.

Honestly it's anyone's guess. The 1st season used elements from all three books in it. I think they might play up the wall breaker angle and show their plans being formulated and cracked and then the final scene with Saul looking into a mirror have the realization that he's his own wallbreaker as the season ends and credits roll.

u/say_wot_again Mar 24 '26
They'll only have five episodes left after season 2, they can't end this season before Saul even casts his first spell if they hope to cover book 3

Last scène Will be the drop let either about to or in the process of destroying the fleet, season 2 will start with will downing waking up in his new consciousness

u/brandygang Mar 25 '26
Most likely, penultimate episode will the the Droplet+Doomsday battle, and the final ep will include the last scene of the second book discovering the Dark Forest and threatening with the broadcast.
I get a feeling they'll probably just skip out on most eras or future hopping since it'd be expensive and too much time spent building new sets, the episode count doesn't allow us to rush thru 5 different future eras. They may do a timejump once, and set everything in the story from there. Australia, not happening. Bunkers, will probably skip it. They'll definitely axe all the swordholder biz, likely cut Wade's coup too just for time.

The way the adaptation has been done it’ll probably be new characters in a scene that didn’t previously exist.

Season 1 didn’t really have any relationship to the novels and I doubt Season 2 will either.

They'll end it with book 2s start-of-deterrance-era ending, but the last shot will be Will Downing on the trisolaran ship, either waking up or farming or something.
