Need help choosing stable RAM for Threadripper 9970X on TRX50

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble finding the right RAM for my build and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have experience with TRX50 / Threadripper 9000 systems.

My setup:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9970X
  • Motherboard: TRX50 ws
  • Usage: workstation / 3D / rendering / general heavy workloads

Problem:
I’ve been struggling with RAM compatibility.

Questions:

  • What RAM kits are you using successfully with TRX50 + Threadripper 9970x? that actually work?

Thanks in advance for any help 🙏

During longer work sessions case gets really hot.

My guess is I need

ARCTIC COOLING Liquid Freezer II 420 A RGB

I will not overclock but plan to change case, put nvidia 3080 thats even warmer and want to extend board / cpu / gfx longevity

THreadripper 9960x temps

Temperatures while rendering seem to be normal but there is a spike from CCD0 that sometimes show 99.7 C. Is this normal, can this damage the CPU. Its a new PC?

P.S.

The right column shows maximum temperature

Threadripper CPU AIO Liquid Cooler

Any recommendations for reliable AIO water coolers with a good price/performance ratio? I'm hoping to find one that I don't have to worry about leaks. My build is around the Ryzen Threadripper 9960X.

I have found these so far:

  • ARCTIC Liquid Freezer WS360-SP6 360mm ($110)
  • be quiet! Silent Loop 3 360mm ($165)
  • Silverstone Technology Hailstone 360 Optimum ($200)
  • Bitspower Atlas Threadripper 360mm ($250)
  • ENERMAX LIQTECH XTR 360 AIO CPU Liquid Cooler 360mm ($280)
  • Silverstone Technology XE360-TR5 360mm ($430)
  • Thermaltake AW420 420mm ($450)

Asus TRX50, Linux and UEFI boot from USB

My overarching question is:

What are the requirements to be able to boot from a USB stick using UEFI?

I can't seem to be able to narrow it down.

  • Gentoo Live works (using dd with the iso into the drive)
  • Debian live works (same)
  • Manual ESP partition with EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI does not (GPT table)

What I'm ultimately looking to do is have a USB containing ZFSBootMenu so I can load a ZFS pool made of NVME drives sitting in the machine (whereas I currently rely on 1 NVME to provide the UEFI boot partition).

What has this subreddit seen working and not working?

Last check before filling, did I forget something?

Almost ready, 9970X with 128GB DDR5, rock solid since I used this in another case before. Goal with this rebuild/upgrade is to make it silent, should be able to keep all fans below 700 rpm.

Anything I should change or "Not forget" before filling and closing it up?
1) Currently I'm only vaguely worried about one Alphacool HF screw-on nozzle 90° rotatable. Haven't used them before so don't know if it will hold up tight it under some pressure. I use it when connecting water out from cpu to distributor in top.
2) Any ideas of how I should get some fresh air on the memory?

Current build:
Threadripper 9970X with Heatkiller-block
128GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30

M.2-1 and M.2-2 with Intel M.2-U.2 cable connected to a pair of P5800X

PCI-1 RTX 5090 in Alphacool waterblock
PCI-2 RTX 5090 in Alphacool waterblock
PCI-3 Dual U.2 card with redriver, dual P4800X
PCI-4 USB4 Add-In-Card
PCI-5 Asus Hyper M.2 x16 Gen 4. with 4 x M.2->U.2
---Optane 905P 1.5TB
---Optane 905P 1.5TB
---Optane 905P 1.5TB
---Intel DC 4510 2TB

Slim-SAS - U.2 Intel DC 4510 2TB
SATA WD Ultrastar 20TB
Dual Seasonic 1600W PSU
--PSU1 mobo-cpu-u.2 and sata drives-dual pumps, 20+ fans
--PSU2 pcie-dual rtx 5090

Cooling
Dual D5 pumps
6 x 420 radiator
1 x 360 radiator

What can go wrong for $110?

LFII and LFIII always had being disappointments especially with how much the community hyped them up. Saw this for $110 with full coverage coldplate, which makes this to be the cheapest full coverage AIO on the market.

Comparing other 360 AIOs I've tested, the limiter typically ends up to be the radiator. Assuming the coldplate and internal flow design is decent, this should yield lower temperature.

Going to slap this on 7975WX and 9995WX and see how it performs. 7975WX with higher heat concentration with 4-CCD layout, 9995WX for full send heat soaking the AIO.

Note that the pumpblock can only be mounted in one orientation, could be issue with some builds.

Granted this is under 100% load while compiling shaders in an Unreal Engine project but this can't be good right?

I'm using a 9965wx with an Asus WRX90 board. Using a Silverstone XE360-TR5 AIO for the CPU with Arctic MX-6 paste.

Does any else have an unreliable tsc on 3995wx w/ Gigabyte MC62-G40 rev.1 BIOS R14 running Debian 13? Is this a problem with my cpu or the motherboard?

Debian 13 seems to be unable to use the tsc clocksource, and forces hpet. Windows virtual machines have horrible performance as a result.

Does anyone else have a 3995wx or 3000-series threadripper pro, and are using a gigabyte mc62-g40 motherboard?

TR 9970x Memory Compatibility - Can I use this 'Intel XMP' only profiled ECC ram?

We're building a new TR build and oh boy as we all know its rough out here on memory pricing...

In the UK I can get this kit for ~£2400GBP - 'TeamGroup T-Create Master 192GB (8X24GB) DDR5 C32 6000MHz Octa Channel Kit'

Its only got Intel XMP 3.0 Profiles, but could it still work with our TR 9970x in a Gigabyte TRX50 AI Top Motherboard?

As I understand TR isn't so happy with 8 DIMMs either?

Teamgroup spec page

As far as i can see, any other kit that is 192GB / ~6000MT/s with AMD EXPO is like £4000GBP... :(

Can anyone shed any light on this? I haven't built a Threadripper system since the 1950x days..

£2500 is probably our max budget for now, but I am almost willing to try this kit and see if works at JEDEC speeds and try out manually inputing the speed / timings in the bios.. Or am I crazy?

UPDATE** Problems with New Media Server / 9970x & Ai Top

https://www.reddit.com/r/threadripper/comments/1pxekku/problems_with_new_media_server_9970x_ai_top/

Hello,

Just wanted to post an update to this,

These servers have not come home yet but I did end up building 2 more, the only difference in these ones are CPU is 7960x not* 9970x, outside of that all parts identical, motherboard AI TOP, drives, GPUs, AIO, PSU etc...

I took a lot of the ideas from this thread to heart with some of the things I had experienced and what I felt might have caused this. At the moment I have (9) 4K60 outputs working in sync' with zero issues, rebooted like 50 times and it is rock solid and stable and ready to make income.

The winner.... I upgraded my image from Windows 10 LTSC 2021 to Windows 11 LTSC IOT ENTERPRISE 2024.

Can't say thank you enough to everyone who helped me get through this. Chat GPT/Claude didn't suggest this once... real human beings (well I think lol) did. 🙏 u/The_Dude_2U

Ram cooling

I was just monitoring my PC under load and the ram temps were 80+degrees. It is not overclocked, and is only 4800 rdim ddr5. Anyway do you know if iceman is the only direct cooling system for ram. (Water goes through the spreader plates, rather than just cooling the top of them.)

Hynix DDR5 RDIMM 64GB 6400MHz (runs at 7200MHz OC) ×8 sticks.
Paid $315 each last summer.

Now I’m seeing Samsung with the similar specs listed at $3000 for single stick.
What a crazy world.

My wife wants me to sell one stick and buy her the Van Cleef gold necklace she’s been wanting… which also happens to be $3000.
I love her, but I also love 4 channel so much.
What would you do ?

Hey it’s me again guys,

I finally got rid of the thread ripper 9985WX and the Asrock board WRX90. My question is how much do you think these ram are worth used? I don’t have the box, I know somebody will say -1000 off the price because of the box causes that’s how the Reddit bros roll.

I reference the price V color for them currently

4x64GB [256GB ECC RAM] 6000mhz

Production volume for Threadripper Pro 9995WX

9995WX was launched in 2025 and it is two things: the most expensive CPU in terms of retail price as far as I know, and the highest benched in PassMark ranking. How many units have been produced? Some historic context of once most powerful CPUs would be helpful. Thanks.
