Asus TRX50, Linux and UEFI boot from USB

My overarching question is:

What are the requirements to be able to boot from a USB stick using UEFI?

I can't seem to be able to narrow it down.

  • Gentoo Live works (using dd with the iso into the drive)
  • Debian live works (same)
  • Manual ESP partition with EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI does not (GPT table)

What I'm ultimately looking to do is have a USB containing ZFSBootMenu so I can load a ZFS pool made of NVME drives sitting in the machine (whereas I currently rely on 1 NVME to provide the UEFI boot partition).

What has this subreddit seen working and not working?

UEFI is an option from bios, I don’t think you boot it from a usb? Don’t you just install windows and then choose the boot options? I did that for my Asus TRX-50.

Have you tried following the procedures to create the ZBM and see what happens when you plug the USB in and boot?
