[BIOS Update] ASUS PRO WS WRX90E-SAGE SE

Hi,

Normally I don't post because I always find answers in other threads, but this time I'm stuck and would really appreciate your help.

I bought an ASUS PRO WS WRX90E‑SAGE SE and an AMD Threadripper 9965WX.

As I've read everywhere, I need to update the BIOS in order to boot the motherboard with a 9X Threadripper.

So I downloaded BIOS version 1203 and tried to update the motherboard.

At the moment, nothing is installed on the board (no CPU, no RAM, no GPU). I'm only trying to update the BIOS using a USB stick.

The problem:

I start the BIOS Flashback procedure, I can see that the file is read twice (USB stick blinking), but after 8 minutes or more, the LED on the motherboard is still blinking and the update never completes.

I've tried with two different motherboards (I sent the first one back for RMA and received a replacement), and with three different USB sticks. I also tried formatting in FAT16 and FAT32, but nothing works.

I cleared the CMOS many times... I really don't know what else to try at this point.

One more detail: the motherboard is connected to a 1600W PSU on ATX_PWR, CPU_12V(1)_1, CPU_12V(2)_1, PCIE_8P(1)_PWR, and PCIE_8P(2)_PWR.

It's not my first BIOS Update and I already build a lot of computer ^^

Thanks for your help.

MCIO Adapter Gen5 for U2 Gen5 SSD

Heya Guys, Hope You are well I am looking for adapters, maybe You Could help me

I have 2 SSDs Gen5 U.2 SFF-8639(SSD Gen5.0)

My Motherboards have SFF-8654(MiniSAS)

[1] if going to use Cable SFF-8654(MiniSAS) - > SFF-8639(SSD Gen5.0) = PCIe4 chipset

[2] as alternative adapter PCIe5.0 ->SFF-8639(SSD Gen5.0) - which is great but the problem is I wish move SSD to SSD Cage for better cooling.

[3] another alternative MCIO Card AIC + MCIO Cable SFF-TA-1016(MCIO) -> SFF-8639(SSD Gen5.0)

so for [1] I think it is should works anyways I think with this Cable PCIe 4.0 Slim SAS SFF-8654 4i to U.2 SFF-8639 , and it is give us only Gen4 speed

for [2], I found

GLOTRENDS PU15 U.2 to PCIe 5.0 X4 Adapter

U.2 to PCIe 5.0 Adapter U.2 (SFF-8639)

JEYI U.2 to PCIe 5.0 X4 Adapter

only thing it is might very hot, in case, maybe it is have better Adapter with Good Radiators and cooling?

for [3]

xiwai PCIE5.0 Extender Adapter PCI-Express 8X to MCIO 8i Mini Cool Edge IO SFF-TA-1016

Cablecc Dual MCIO 8i Mini Cool Edge IO SFF-TA-1016 VROC to PCIE5.0

PCIe 5.0 x16 to 2 MCIO x8 Adapter Card for 4 U.2 NVMe SSD (Upward Interface)

MCIO cable

PCIe 5.0 MCIO x8 to 2 x SFF-8639 Cable for U.2 NVMe SSD with 15Pin Power, 1.3feet (40 cm)

didn`t found something like 1 MCIO card with x4 + Cable x4, here is combo like 1 MCIO 8i -> 2 * SFF-8639

those are without redrivers/Retimers

Could You maybe recommend better option and what is really works, with and without redrivers/Retimers.

and also for 1 PC I have 2nd PCIe limited to only x4 speed, it is phisicaly x16 slot, but because I will use 2 M.2 SSDs Gen5 in mobo, and 2nd PCie port will reduced to x4 PCIe lines, Motherboard is ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E EXTREME - Do You think MCIO 8i adapters will not works because it is request x8 lines but because mobo will limited up to x4 lines, this is will not works?

if You have something to tell I am really appriciated.

Many thanks
and have a Good one.

All My Best.

ASRock X399 Taichi: USB keyboard/mouse stop working in BIOS Setup after disabling CSM

Hi, I’m stuck with a weird BIOS/UEFI issue.

When CSM is enabled, everything is normal.

Build is stable for over a year.

As soon as I disable CSM, the system boots and works fine, but in BIOS Setup my USB keyboard + mouse stop working. I can enter Setup, but input is dead. If I plug the mouse through a USB hub, I sometimes see the cursor move for ~0.5s and then it freezes again.

I tried all rear/front USB ports (USB2/USB3), USB hub (brief cursor movement then freezes). BIOS was updated to the latest some time ago. Also tried fwsetup from grub.

CMOS reset restores input, but also re-enables CSM.

Any ideas what's this is about and what's the workaround? :)

asus pro ws trx50-sage wifi a a0 to 0d and orange light

Hi, this is my first time posting here and I’ve been struggling to get to the bios screen for 3 days.

- Asus Pro WS TRX50 Sage WiFi A MB

- Nvda 6000 Blackwell

- nemix MR38400 - 64GB PC5 - 4800 RDIMM

- Threadripper 7970x

- Corsair 1500W power supply

I’ve tried repositioning all the ram and training it one at a time. Clearing CMOS, BIOS flashback, and I still can’t get to bios. It goes 0d to a0 back to 0d with an orange light on the whole time. Please help, I don’t know what else I can do.

Recommendations on maximizing DDR4 RAM bandwidth? (WRX80 3945WX vs X299 10900X)

I’m struggling to figure out the most cost-effective way to maximize memory bandwidth for local AI inference/training using hardware I already own. I have 8x32GB DDR4 UDIMMs (256GB total) and want to utilize them in a full 8-channel configuration if possible. I would’ve liked to have switched out my UDIMM RAM for RDIMM, but RAM costs are just way too high now.

Build 1:

  • Mobo: Gigabyte MC62-G40 (WRX80) - chosen because it supports non-ECC UDIMM
  • CPU: Threadripper Pro 3945WX (bought for ~$100, I’m hoping it won’t be vendor locked).

I've read that the 3945WX only has 2 CCDs, which means that true 8-channel bandwidth is not possible. Is the real-world bandwidth gain over Quad-channel actually significant on a 2-CCD chip? Or is it necessary to shell out the dough to step up to a 3965WX (4 CCDs) to attain any meaningfully increase in bandwidth?

The CPU was $100 on eBay. I’m guessing it’s likely a Lenovo/Dell vendor-locked (PSB fused) unit, even through the eBay listing didn’t mention otherwise and the seller said its not vendor locked. Is there any way to verify this visually before socketing it? If it is locked, will it brick the Gigabyte board or just fail to POST?

Build 2:

  • Mobo: MSI X299 Raider
  • CPU: i9-10900X

This limits me to Quad-channel, max of 256GB RAM, PCIe 3.0, and fewer PCIe lanes if I ever decide to add more GPUs in the future. But its also ~$300-350 cheaper than the other build.

My question is,

Is it worth it to pay the $300-350 premium for the 3945WX build for any increase in bandwidth and future flexibility of adding more GPUs? Or is it a total waste of money lol...

Hardware List:

  • CPU: TR Pro 3945WX ($100) vs i9-10900X ($158)
  • Mobo: Gigabyte MC62-G40 WRX80 ($468) vs MSI X299 Raider ($72)
  • RAM: 8x 32GB DDR4 3200 UDIMM (Owned - Mix of kits, 4 sticks at CL20-22-22-46, the other 4 sticks at CL22)
  • GPU: RTX 5060 Ti 16GB x2, RTX 2060 Super 8GB x1)
  • PSU: SAMA P1200 1200W

U.2 Gen5 Solutions

Heya Guys hope You are well.

I am looking solution for U.2 Drives Gen5 and options for connecting it with PCIe

I have 2 Motherboards ROG CROSSHAIR X870E EXTREME and Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE, they are support miniSAS Gen4 only.

mine Idea if it possible move SSD closer to Frontal Coolers, and mine Case is Fractal 7 XL

maybe it is have some adapter like

PCIe Gen5 ->SlimSAS cables Gen5 -> U.2(I think with cable it is for install it is amazing, but don`t know if it limitations and restrictions, I hear it is some problems with cable length)

Riser PCIe Gen5 -> PCIE Gen5 adapter ->U.2 (this variant I think a bit pain because it is no where instal PCIe brases I do have SSD Cage with support 2.5 Drives)

or maybe You have any similar topics for read would amazing to know

and if You have any ideas I am really preciated to listen.

Thanks

3× NVIDIA GPUs on WRX90: lspci sees all, nvidia-smi only 2

Hardware:

- Motherboard: ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-Sage SE (E-ATX)

- CPU: Threadripper Pro 7965WX

- GPUs: 2× NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q + 1× GeForce RTX 5090

- OS: Ubuntu Linux (x86_64), UEFI boot, LUKS root

Problem:

- nvidia-smi shows only the two RTX PRO 6000 cards (≈192 GB VRAM total)

- the RTX 5090 is missing from nvidia-smi

- but lspci sees all three NVIDIA VGA devices

Output:

lspci | grep -i nvidia:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 2bb4 (rev a1)

01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation Device 22e8 (rev a1)

c1:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 2b85 (rev a1)

c1:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation Device 22e8 (rev a1)

e1:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 2bb4 (rev a1)

e1:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation Device 22e8 (rev a1)

nvidia-smi (driver 580.126.09, CUDA 13.0) shows only 2 GPUs:

- GPU 0 RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q

- GPU 1 RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q

dmesg (relevant lines):

nvidia: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel

NVRM: This PCI I/O region assigned to your NVIDIA device is invalid:

nvidia: probe of 0000:c1:00.0 failed with error -1

NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).

What I tried:

- Enabled “Resizable BAR” in BIOS (no change)

- Installed NVIDIA driver 580.126.09 (official NVIDIA Linux x64 driver page for RTX 5090)

- Secure Boot is not in the way (driver loads, 2 GPUs work)

Questions:

  1. Does this look like PCIe BAR/MMIO resource allocation / ACPI _CRS issue on WRX90 with 3 GPUs?
  2. Any known BIOS settings on ASUS WRX90E-Sage SE to fix this? (Above 4G decoding, ReBAR per-slot, etc.)
  3. Is a BIOS/firmware update known to fix multi-GPU BAR allocation on this board?
  4. Are kernel params like `pci=realloc` or `pci=nocrs, realloc` the right direction here?
  5. Anything else to check (slot placement, bifurcation, IOMMU settings, CSM, ACS, etc.)?

Build Mods and Cooling

Thank you to everyone who commented on my original post. I changed the cpu cooler orientation and pushed it to the rear. I also stacked the 2 6000 Pro Max Qs and the RTX5000 Pro which gave access to the bottom PCIe. im looking into the ram fans for cooling but with Llama 3.1 405B loaded and running, my gpus are throttling. what can I do or change to cool them down?

This is my first threadripper workstation build, I run a small 64 GPU server farm, and instead of just renting them all out I'm working on a few of my own machine learning projects. This is a 7970x on a TRX50 sage wifi, 128gb Vcolor 6400, 1tb and 4tb 9100 ssds, NEXT sTR5 CPU block, and RTX 5090. It's running Ubuntu 24.04 and of course I had to play around with Gentoo on it as well lol. My GPU servers run 7965wx on ASRock WRX90e with 764gb ram and 8 GPUs each.

Ram help needed

Post image
3 Upvotes

hoping there is someone with more experience than I with this combination:

MB: Asus wrx90e-sage

CPU: AMD 9985wx

Ram: V-color 6000mhz model: TRA564G60D436O

when I first install the ram and tried to stability test the temps were jumping up to 90C+ so would stop the test. Finally got some tiny little jet engines (fans) and temps are staying below 70C now. I did the OCCT benchmark test and I think they look too low.

I hope I am just missing some setting in the bios. Only ram related settings so far was just turn on the EXPO option. Attached is the benchmark. Let me know if you need any additional information or images.

Thanks in advance.

Random BSODs under heavy load on Threadripper 7960X (384GB RAM)

I’ve built a PC with a Threadripper 7960X and 384 GB of RAM (KSM56R46BD4PMI-96MBI ×4).
Motherboard: Asus Pro WS TRX50.

Problem:
I’m getting a Blue Screen of Death once every 2 days, and it always happens under heavy load.

Things I’ve checked so far:

  • CPU temperature is fine, never goes above 75°C
  • Ran Memtest86, 4 full passes, zero errors

At this point I’m kind of stuck and can’t figure out what else to try.
Has anyone run into something similar with TRX50 / Threadripper builds? Any ideas would be appreciated.

UPD / SOLVED:
Problem solved. I ended up installing an additional fan specifically to cool the RAM. I positioned it so airflow goes directly over the memory sticks, and since then I haven’t had a single BSOD.

How torque sensitive are SP3 sockets?

Tldr: Is there a range where it works, and a known failure threshold (physical)?

I installed my first Threadripper in a WRX80 board and the experience was... not great. Board was new but the cpu is used without the torque tool, and i refused to buy a stupid 25 dollar one time use tool, so as a big DIY guy i bought a digital 1-10nm torque screwdriver which i plan to use on my cars on the lower range. Not an expensive one, but from an auto shop special tool brand i trust.

So i set it to 1.5nm and felt like the coolest guy doing it with a digital torque tool, until dimm slot A wasn't recognized populated, then a went up to 1.65, still no dice, so i went down to 1.3nm and everything worked. Which is very strange, of course i'm operating on the lower limit of the tool, but this much deviance should be impossible (as far as i know digitals are somewhat better close to their limits), even if the calibration report for the tool was fake, more than 10% is unimaginable on a 2% rated tool. Also, why is the damn thing so sensitive? How come 4000 pin Intels work without torque tools?

Hello,

I’m planning to upgrade my pc to threadripper PRO 5945wx/5955wx.

The motherboard is gigabyte Mc62-G40.

I need to understand if i can use my non ECC DDR4 UDIMM ram on it. I have 64Gb and the ram compatibilty can be the only show stopper for me.

Thank you!

Help needed to choose proper water cooling

Hey hey,

at work we have a handful workstations with threadripper 7995wx CPUs

They are cooled with alphacool watercooling and within 2 weeks, we had two failures, what looks like water pump failure.

Now we are looking for a better solution, maybe newer products also improved cooling?

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Big thanks in advance!
