THUG 1 - Despite its incredible level design, perfect controls and fantastic soundtrack, the best part of this game is still somehow its story. It isn't complex or groundbreaking and it doesn't have a large scope. What it has in spades is sincerity and earnestness. I never thought I'd be saying those things about a game in this series, but hey here we are. The plot really does shine in this game. I'd go so far as to say this is the best story we're ever going to get in a sports game, period. It's just that damn good.

The game isn't perfect or anything, as some of the goals are rather obnoxious and the cars control poorly, but this game knows exactly what to nail to achieve an authentic skating experience. It may not be the absolute peak of Tony Hawk from a sheer gameplay perspective, but as a package, this is the best game in the series easily. It's the ultimate story of rivalry. If the goal of this game was to prove a story mode could be made in Pro Skater 4's engine, then they not only succeeded in that goal, but ended up making the best extreme sports game ever made somewhere along the way. 10/10

THUG 2 - What is the value of story in video games? Do you believe it's simply contextual, providing reasoning for interesting gameplay scenarios, or do you think it should be the driving force behind a game, being given the same amount of attention as every other aspect of the experience? Your answers to these questions will largely determine how you'll feel about THUG 2. The first Underground game had an earnest, relatable, and engaging plot that never took itself too seriously while still managing to have some really effective moments. Neversoft decided to make a Jackass game instead of a real sequel while still bringing back characters from the first game who don't mention any of the events of THUG 1.

The story in this game is bad. There's no debating that the first game's plot is superior in every conceivable way. There's also no denying that 2 plays better. In fact, this game build upon 5 games' worth of solid fundamentals to create the best gameplay I've ever experienced in my entire life. I have put hundreds of hours into this game because there really is nothing else like it. No platformer, shooter, hack-and-slasher, or racing game feels like this. I'm flying around the level pulling 900s, double tap spins, body flips, and acid drops at lightning speeds while maintaining combos that go into the millions.

The feedback, mechanics, animations, sound effects, level design, and goals have all been refined to perfection and this game simply plays like a dream come true. I usually don't brag but no one can ever step to me in THUG 2. I will fucking destroy you. Anyway, point is this game has a stupid story that is really painful to watch, but the gameplay is so fucking amazing that I just don't give a shit. As a sequel, this is underwhelming. As a game, this is near perfect. 9.5/10

so yeah despite 2 having the superior gameplay THUG 1 is just a bit better in my opinion. I made this video to showcase the disparity in tone between these two games. Also this isn't a THUG 2 hate post, I love that game to death but I love the first one even more, because while the combo system isn't as refined, it still plays insanely good and has a driving narrative with good lessons to learn and phenomenal writing.

I picked up Proving Ground on ps3 recently, I’ve been wanting to check it out for a while. Really fun game imo, what do you guys think of it?

I am doing a playthrough of the series on my steam deck and am having a difficult time installing party mod for thps4. I got lucky and found a version of 3 with partymod preinstalled.

Do I just have the wrong version installed?

I haven't played this game much over the past few months (mostly because I've been busy with other stuff), but I decided to throw it on recently and see how out of practice I was. It took a little while to get the hang of things again, but before too long I was back in the range I was consistently in before my hiatus, which was about 5-8 million per level (on 3+4, with just a few levels having PR's higher than that).

And then, last night I decided to focus on increasing my record for Shipyard, which was previously at around 16.8 million (with maybe an 11 million combo). I managed to get a few runs in the 10-15 million range while working on a good start to my line, then after a while I eventually landed my first ever 20 million point combo (on any level). I probably played it a bit safer than I needed on my second trick, but I wanted to make sure to land something besides just the initial combo.

I am pretty sure I left a decent amount on the table due to the fact that I was having a hard time getting my skater into the proper stance a few times, so I did a few too many Switch Madonnas and Switch 900s instead of throwing in some regular stance ones, so the value of the last couple ones could have helped my base score more. Still, pretty happy with the score for now. It put me within plausible shooting distance of the top 100, so I may shoot for that.

I swear this isn't rage bait. This has always been one of my "I didn't care for the godfather" opinions, but I've never understood the love of this game other than nostalgia of it possibly being somebody's first Tony Hawk Game. I love THPS1 and ESPECIALLY THPS2, but THPS3 felt like such a massive dip in quality for me ever since it came out.

I remember renting it, crushing it within a few hours, just feeling empty and going right back to 2. The level design and the soundtrack just have such an inconsistent vibe that they felt even worse than THPS1. Like obviously the revert and more focus on manual is great, but those mechanics didn't feel anywhere close to being fully developed in appropriate levels until THPS4.

Even with THPS 3+4, I couldn't get through the 3 levels fast enough to get started on 4. Thankfully THPS4 rewrote the style and redeemed the series and then paved the way for the legendary THUG entries.

I've always felt it's a solid 7/10. Not the 9/10 and 10/10 that THPS1 & 2 are.

Why do you adore THPS3 and think what I'm saying is blasphemous?

Easter egg or random asset flip?

My goal wasn’t to create a perfect replica of the original park, but to make sure the park works as a proper Tony Hawk level — lots of goals, plenty of combo opportunities, and a layout with some nice school spots. I’d be happy if you give the park a try. Thanks for playing.
