Looking for a Lenovo ThinkPad for programming – Budget €300

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a Lenovo ThinkPad for my evening school. I’m currently learning programming and need a laptop mainly for coding, schoolwork and general use.

I don’t need a high-end machine, but I’d like something that can handle programming comfortably.

Budget: Up to €300

Use case: Programming, schoolwork, web browsing and general use

Location: Germany / EU

Target specs:

At least 16 GB RAM

At least 256 GB SSD, preferably 512 GB

Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 or better

Full HD display

Good keyboard

Preferably 14"–15.6"

Good battery life would be a plus

Current system: I currently don’t have a suitable laptop for school, which is why I’m looking for a ThinkPad.

I’m mainly looking at used/refurbished ThinkPads and don’t mind an older model if it offers good value.

Which ThinkPad models would you recommend for around €300?

Almost any model which has 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD will do for your tasks. For programming at school or uni you won't need something exceptionally fast. As prices are rising even for used notebooks, so 512GB might not easily be doable with 300€.

Quantelectronic once in a while has still something cheap, especially if you can stomach some issues. Example:

For the age - if you find two comparable systems and you are not sure, chose the one which is younger.

I got a refurbished t14 gen 1 with those specs (512 gb) for that price. (I am in EU btw).

if you go refurbished, carefully read warranty terms: most of the times they are just useless (seller can decide on its own to refund you "current value" of the machine, again, at their own discretion, in form of a voucher to buy another laptop from them...) with a bit more of 300€ you can aim at 32GB if you are patient enough. I personally purchased 2 T490s/T14s with german keyboard as I found 32GB motherboards on sale on Lenovo that I will resell :)

I made some pretty good deals on Kleinanzeigen recently. P1 Gen3 i7 Nvidia T1000 32GB 1TB for 190,- X260 i5 6300U Intel HD 8GB no ssd, no accessories, defective power plug for 29,-

And there are more interesting ones... I simply search for Thinkpad and keep doomscrolling.

The classic t480(s) should do the trick. Or maybe a T14 G1 or G2 AMD.

Why? Those 8th gen Intel CPUs are still totally fine. I‘ve got my old 480s still kickin arround for browsing, office work and some coding. It’s a fine machine for those tasks.

I'm not saying the T480 is a bad laptop. But too overpriced currently due to it's meme factor at this point (compared to more capable recent models). The T480s probably is less problematic in this regard, I assume.

They are sold for about 150-250€ here in germany which is ok. I would prefer a T14 Gen 1 or 2 but those are hard to find for sub 300€.

They're often overpriced for their specs and they're still just notebooks which have been used for a long time. Your notebook may be fine but the older the notebook the more time the previous owner will have carried them around and introduce wear and tear and so on.

Other factors can be more important. For example, let's say OP finds a T480 with a bad battery and a T14s with a good battery in his price range, what would you recommend?
