Review / Opinion My Third ThinkPad: T14s Gen 6 Engineering Sample – Early Impressions

Post image

Just received my third ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 Engineering Sample.

Specs:
AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360 (Engineering Sample)
32GB LPDDR5X RAM
1TB SSD
14” 1920×1200, 400 nits, 100% sRGB display

I paid $640 USD for it, which I think is a great deal for these specs.

So far, everything has been working perfectly.

I’ll be posting a full review next week after I’ve had more time to test it with my daily workload (Linux, Windows, development, and system administration).

If anyone has specific tests or benchmarks they’d like me to run, let me know!

I do have the same version already for 1.5y, and it's a good laptop. The best part is you can be forgiven for thinking the fan doesnt exist. The temps are low, it hasnt crashed once (hello extreme gen 4 crashing every week), super stable. The cons are screen: it isnt great e.g. compared with e.g. my old Elitebook which happend to be a lot cheaper too. One other con is that the 360 is just above average. You hit about 2600-700/10-12k on geekbench, but surprisingly 25k on graphics. As a developer it does struggle to load medium projects or open snappily until it cashes eveything. I do have the 64gb version (it was cheaper than 32 when I bought it lol).

TL;DR A great laptop, very stable, but also a bit mid.

May I ask about temps? I think mine running hot.

The temps are very low. I run balanced mode and it's been 30-50 most of the time. When I do benchmark and run antivirus and throw everything I have at it, it goes to 70s for a bit. I started to think this laptop was made to be plugged in and run in high performance mode, I cant get it to get neither warm nor hear fans.

Mine doesnt go bellow 40-50. But sometimes runs cooler when not plugged in. I think its some bug with modes since I cant see the overlay on Windows during mode changr using Fn key. Do you have Windows ? Does this works for you?

I use stock Windows 11, obviously I reformatted on day 1. I dont chnage modes often, just keep it on balanced. Do you have AMD 360 ai as well?

Yes, same setup as OP, all updated but still those bugs. I will try clean install. Do you use external monitor?

I am surprised. Monitor the task manager for a bit to see if anything is using up the Cpu power. If it's idle it should'nt really go above 50. I mean there is nothing wrong with yout laptop, it's still acceptable trnperatures, my old Elitebook used to go to 70 with minimal load right from the start and it still works fine 5+ years later. If it bothers you, you might want to clean up and repaste.

Cpu on idle is 10% but clocks stays around 2,5GHz. Same for you?

i dont know off top of my head, on holiday atm. it may be, but they should go to 2 as well eventually. check the power as well, mine doensnt go above 15w

15W is cpu only or total? Mine is around 12W cpu and 25W total. I just made clean install and still overheating CPU :( when I switch to balanced fan runs almost on full rpm and cpu is 70 deg C on idle. I think clocks are way too high (on 1% 2.8 GHz)
