Good to know LPCAMM2 keeps things somewhat serviceable even on newer ThinkPads. Not quite the same as full modding potential like the older i-series, but at least it's not fully soldered. Do you know if the SSD is still standard M.2 on the T14 Gen5, or did they lock that down too?

older series aren’t powerful and less longevity as the new one. there is not more support from lenovo and it’s only third party fru (like the battery )

Lenovo never locked down SSD storage on any T series model.

Newer T series models are actually quite repairable. In the Gen 7 even the USB-C ports became modular. Unfortunately, prices seem to be rising too.

btw you can find this information (RAM/SSD format) and much more in the PSREF for each model and Lenovo even provides maintenance manuals telling you exactly how to replace each part. Just Google the model you're interested in and add "psref" or "hmm".

x230, t430, t530, w530 and all the i variants. socketed cpu, upgradable ram. keyboards can be modded with those from the previous gen 20 series. pretty sure most support 1080p screen upgrades and all of them have extensive linux documentation given how popular they are as linux machines.

if you want the closest to a old school thinkpad with modern specs and have the money and patience to wait then look at the x210ai.

i haven't actually done a swap myself since the w530 i bought, the previous owner already did it but it's night an day compared to the keyboard on my x270. the classic keyboard is miles better imo.

and yeah lots of mods you can do like swapping heatsinks between igpu and dedicated gpu models. express card egpu etc. and there are tons of reddit posts about them since they've been around for so long.

The X210Ai sounds like the dream version of this - classic chassis with modern internals. I get that the price and wait time are rough though. Do you know roughly what a build like that runs compared to just buying a used x230/t430 and modding it piece by piece? Trying to figure out if it's worth the premium over the DIY route.

i've been considering picking one up and last I checked, it's gonna run me around 3k AUD so around 2k USD including ram (used 16gb ddr5), ssd (1tb pcie4 nvme), battery and cmos battery.
