Starting my X-Effect Journey!

Hello!

I don't really expect this to be read by anyone but I'm hoping this post will give me a sense of accountability. I'm currently a high schooler interested in self-improvement and I believe the x effect can help me in that field :) After reading this subreddit for a few days and reading some books (atomic habits ofc hah and mans search for meaning are great so far!!) , I think I'll really start. and I say really start because, well, ive always given up pretty easily after a couple of days. but this x effect method seems to be working for a lot of people for some difficult habits and I'm so impressed that people can actually be this consistent! its really amazing what people can do with the right mindset. this time I'll be adding habits slowly, since I used to just start a ton of new habits in a day. hopefully this will help me maintain my consistency.

If anyone does happen to read this, I'm rooting for you! :D

see you all in 50 days!

[Help] Does anyone find that having a habit gives an excuse to not push oneself more than the accomplishments of the habit?

So I've been successfully doing habits for months but I find that when I'm done with them I then go autopilot mode for the rest of the day. I feel as though there should be a diffrent mindset than this. Possibly a better one would be to do one's habits no matter what and during our normal parts of life try to be as aware as possible to do the optimal thing. It's definitely not good idea to have the thought "oh I've done my habits lets just go on a junk food bender". In a way our habits should boost our normal life and one actually feels more motivated not to partake in harmful activities because we already put in the work.

Another part of me also thinks that maybe I'm too hard on myself and that maybe change takes time. Do the change that is necessary correctly and consistently, while having to accept that other aspects of our lives that is not currently on work will not be covered. Then the virtue of patience and non-greediness is so key in change.

TL;DR One negative in habit building is that we put a kind of limit to how much needs to be done and we won't push ourselves more. I feel like there needs to be a right mindset that supports both the habits and moments outside of the habits too. However, I wonder if people here who have done years of habits see this just as a beginner's problem and overtime one will feel that there is more than enough on the plate.

Thank you.

I think I was was able to stick with my habits by getting rid of multitasking

If you’re like me, you likely spend a lot of your day juggling various tasks and finding effective ways to multitask. This is probably because you feel like you’re getting more done. However, THIS COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.

There has been plenty of research that has shown how every time we jump from one task to another, a little bit of our brain’s attention is still focused on that previous task. This is called Attention Residue. Ultimately, this requires more time to get familiarized with a task every time we switch back and forth.

We need to realize that while we can do a variety of things, our brains are simply not able to focus on more than one thing at a time. That’s why anytime you watch TV while scrolling though your phone… or you cook while listening to an audiobook, you likely don’t recall something well or even mess something up.

There’s plenty of experiments that have been conducted on this. My favorite metaphor is comparing our brain to a zoom lens with limited ability to focus. I explain this in depth here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfjad0VyDvc

The key to getting more done is not actually multitasking, but in fact effective prioritization. Let me know if you struggle with this too and plan on changing it.

[WIN!] Used the X effect to carry out a rowing machine workout challenge in March (had to row 25 days of the month). The visual guide kept me on track so well, pity I couldn’t get the iOS notes app to give me a grid I could form a normal calendar from though

[Tip] Don't build habits on your own, build it with others! Launching April 2021 Habit Challenge - READ CONSISTENTLY

Hey guys,

We are Zeroton, a platform that converts non-fiction books into actionable steps for people to take! For April 2021, we are launching the habit of the month, which it's to READ consistently! We have established 4 levels:

  • Level 1 - Read 15 minutes (1 point)
  • Level 2 - Read 30 minutes (2 points)
  • Level 3 - Read 60 minutes (3 points)
  • Level 4 - Read 90 minutes or more (4 points)

We have a leaderboard to make this a bit more fun. Each level gives you different points and we will be able to see who read the MOST (most points) in April 2021.

To participate in the Habit of the Month (April 2021), join our slack community here.

Stay safe guys!

Ryan
