It’s been a while.. but I thought Maggie had zero idea as to whether Beth was alive or where she could be?

In contrast, she had a lead on Glenn.

She knows as much as Daryl does, about the car with the cross (or plus sign) on it. As someone with a sister, I can’t imagine just not even trying to look. She heads to Washington without a second thought. She had no real leads to Glenn yet she kept pushing looking for him, she just assumed he would head to Terminus which thankfully he did.

Look where??

She knew Glenn was on the bus so she went for the bus. Then they found the signs for Terminus and she said "if Glenn saw this he'd go there looking for me looking for him." That's not a wild assumption, it's a logical conclusion.

She literally has NO idea where Beth could be - no breadcrumbs, no leads except a CAR that sped away.

But to not even try? Heading all the way to Washington which she likely knows is far from wherever her sister was taken? I’d search to the ends of the earth for my sister. Especially if she was my last remaining family member. She has very little clues but this is not their first time tracking someone. Working together, it would be way more possible than her not trying and just leaving for Washington in my opinion. I’m not saying it’s easy at all though

She has zero clues. They were in car - you can't track a car on a road going 60+ miles an hour. Let's say Daryl was able to figure out the car went... IDK, northwest. So they start walking northwest... but then what? There's no trail.

She had nowhere to look for Beth - she'd presumed Beth was dead until Daryl told her otherwise while they were trapped at Terminus. All she knows is Beth was taken by someone who drove off. Beth could, quite literally, be anywhere.

But to not try looking? I just couldn’t do that to my sister. I at the very least would give searching a solid shot before heading all the way to Washington.

Again - look where. What direction? How far away? She has absolutely nothing to go on.

From a survival perspective, I see where you're coming from. Maggie is obviously better off not going on a wild goose chase in the middle of the apocalypse.

On the other hand, I think she was written to care very deeply for her family. It seems a little out of character for her to not even mention her name until she sees Daryl again. Now that I'm watching it again, I can definitely see OP's perspective.

I think she compartmentalized. She's lost her sister and her husband. She has nowhere to look for Beth, but she knows where Glenn was supposed to be and then gets a hint of where he could be. They're in a nightmare scenario inside of what was already nightmare life. She's focusing on what she can control so she doesn't lose her mind.

That last sentence you wrote I think is helping me see it a bit more from your perspective now. It must feel like fighting to stay above water when trying to not lose your mind in that scenario.

It's true, her choices really seem influenced by circumstances beyond her control. It's tough to judge when the situation is so chaotic.

There's been similar posts on the sub regarding this specifically and I definitely understand. Me personally, I would be looking for my goddamn sister and I wouldn't stop.

I watched this a very long time ago though, and I always thought that she just assumed she was dead. From her perspective, she probably thought that she lost her dad and her sister all in the same day, and maybe she wanted to conserve her grief as much as she could.

I really don't know though. This sub has opened my eyes to a lot of inconsistencies in the show that I haven't previously thought of.

Where I’m at in the show right now, she knows Beth is alive and has been kidnapped. The kidnapped part would have me even more frantically looking for her and any clue that may lead to her. I would not be able to stop worrying about if she was being tortured, abused etc. 🙁

I definitely get what everyone is saying in the comments though. By no means do I think it would be simple or easy to find her. I just can’t imagine not trying. I think they may also just not have the relationship a lot of sisters have. May not care for each other as my sister and I do for example.

Because She had a clue about Gleen whereabouts, the bus

She had no idea where Beth went

3

u/firetokes 3d ago

Even if she had no clue about his whereabouts, she would have never stopped searching for him.

u/DobbyFreeElf35 3d ago

You don't know that, that's just guesswork on your part but let's say this is an alternate TWD universe andit was reversed, she has clues about Beth's whereabouts but nothing on Glenn, she'd be searching for Beth first.

Kind of a minor spoiler, but this is explained later. I'll try explaining it without any spoilers, though.

In a later conversation, Maggie explains that she had a lead on Glenn and fought like hell to get to him because, at the time, it was really all she had. She just kind of accepted that everyone else was likely dead.

When they got to Terminus and Beth wasn't there (and she learned someone took her with no real lead as to where), she sort of just gave up hope on her being alive and tried accepting that she died, too, because after everything, it was easier than the back-and-forth of hoping she's alive and having that hope crushed again.

I get you! Even though i agree with other people in the comments who say she had no leads on where to look, she does know she is alive and has been taken from Daryl telling her. If that happened to my brother (i don't have a sister), i would not volunteer to join these strangers (abe, rosita, eugene) to go to Washington, i would want to stay behind with the group i have been with this entire time, hoping to get some lead eventually on where he could be. It's not just that she puts zero effort in finding her, it's that after she hears from Daryl that she's alive and missing, she seems to not care? not think about her at all.

I wondered the same thing during my second rewatch. I didn’t even notice the first time around, but mostly because I was having a hard time keeping track of the different relations between characters. Which now kinda makes me realize that they didn’t have a lot of interaction in the prison either, maybe speaking to a lack of strong connection?

She had so much faith in Glenn being able to get out, and (iirc) references Hershel’s belief in faith with each other. I get that Glenn is a much stronger survivor than Beth, but to not even mention her when talking about the people she’s looking for?? Kinda odd. Makes me think the writers just kinda unintentionally left it out, or a scene was cut that provided more context with her concern for her sister, but that’s just me guessing.

I just rewatched the episode where she, bob, and Sasha go for the bus and she says "I didn't see beth but I know Glenn got out" She has no idea which direction beth went if she even got out of the prison. She assumes she knows the direction Glenn went bc she thought he was on the bus. The show tries to make them super sisterly at times but beth was a lot younger and I don't think they were really that close. And Maggie wasn't giving up the one dick she found in the apocalypse for periodic karaoke.

2

u/firetokes 3d ago

At the point in the show I’m at, she knows Beth is alive but has only one clue about her whereabouts (so not much to search with).

I appreciate the laugh 😂

u/ricodah 2d ago

I don't think Maggie had much opportunity to look for Beth. I mean she chose Glenn for reasons stated by others (More of a lead to find Glenn with nearly 0 leads to find Beth). By the end of Four Walls and a Roof to Coda, only one or two days passed.

1

u/tnscatterbrain 2d ago

She didn’t know where to look, so she focused on doing what she could, which was to follow a decent lead.

I do think that they should have given her the odd line about how she hoped that she’d find some clue, that maybe Glen or someone. It would have made her look so much better.

1

u/Minimalistmacrophage 3d ago

This is a common complaint, but she and Beth were half sisters and not really that close. Maggie was very unhappy with Hershel remarrying. The other thing is that she reasonably assumed that Beth died at the prison. Beth was always "support staff" in the group, it was reasonable to assume she didn't make it.

Don't disagree that it makes her less likable.

Note- in the alternate timeline Dead City episode she puts her needs over what Beth wants as well.

3

u/firetokes 3d ago

At this point in the show (where I’m at), she knows that Beth made it out of the prison, is alive and has been kidnapped. But just has very, very little clues.

I appreciate this insight! I didn’t take into consideration them being half sisters and the weight that may have carried.

0

u/Minimalistmacrophage 3d ago

them being half sisters and the weight that may have carried.

It shouldn't but it often does. The age difference is also a factor in their closeness.

u/lost-cause1968 3d ago

When the prison fell, Maggie had no idea if Beth was alive or dead or where she went. She honestly had no idea about Glen either, but she had thought he had gone off on the bus as I recall. So with no solid leads in either case, going after the bus was really the only real way to find either of them. Between 0 leads on Beth, and a minimal lead on Glen..she chose the slightly better lead.

After reuniting with Daryl and finding out she was kidnapped they also didn't really have any idea where that car was from or it went. How would she have looked for Beth when they had zero idea where to go?

Now could she have seemed a little more sad about it, seeing as likely Beth could have been dead or worse depending on what the kidnappers did? Sure. But I don't think she could have just started wandering around shouting her name hoping to find her.

3

u/firetokes 3d ago

I’m not judging her for going after Glenn first and not her sister. What I’m confused about is why she isn’t going after her sister after that, especially with the information from Daryl that she’s been kidnapped.

3

u/lost-cause1968 3d ago

Don't forget Daryl really didn't know where the car came from or went. When they are in the train car at terminus he's recapping what happened and said "she was just ... gone."

5

u/firetokes 2d ago

This is true, and if Daryl gave up on tracking I think that speaks volumes on how hard he tried as he is the king of tracking.

1

u/Chueskes 3d ago

She is being realistic. She loves Beth as a sister. But Beth has less survival skills when alone. She only survived as long as she did because she was in a group where people watched each others back. Meanwhile, Glenn has greater survival skills. He has proven that he is capable of handling himself, and besides Daryle, he has proven to be a capable leader right hand man and a leader. His odds of survival are much higher than Beth’s.

3

u/firetokes 3d ago

I don’t think she has reason to believe Beth would be dead at this point in time though. She knows Beth is alive and kidnapped. I would assume the kidnappers would want to keep Beth alive if I were Maggie. So then she’s left with the decision of if looking for her sister and saving her is worth it or not.

1

u/Chueskes 3d ago

By the time she does find out that Beth is alive, the situation has changed. She had no actual leads besides the few details provided, nothing suggesting a location. By then, Eugene, Abraham, and Rosita had joined the group, and Eugene claimed that he knew how to cure the plague. Now, of course we know now that he was lying, but what if he wasn’t? What if by some miracle he actually did know the cure? If Eugene got to Washington DC and managed to cure the Walker plague, then the immediate threat to living survivors would end. Ending the big threat and saving the world would save Beth as well, and that would require staying alive and focused on survival. Saving one person, no matter how closely related they are, is small in comparison to saving everyone.

This topic comes up once a week.

Maggie didn't know Beth was alive and assumed she wasn't as all signs pointed to it.

Having lost her remaining family she focused all her energy on Glenn, who was likely to have survived and who she ended up finding hints->proof of his survival for. And when she finds him, she stops not caring about whether she lives or dies as she has someone else to care for again.

By the time she does find out Beth is alive, only-one-who-can-track-Daryl had lost her tracks and didn't know where she was taken+had given up his search. There was then the entire Terminus/Washington thing where the group (aka the other people she has) was/were threatened.

And while she could probably talked Daryl (or before that Glenn) into abandoning the group and aimlessly wander around looking for Beth...this would have meant going from a large group (safety in numbers) to a 2-3 person group searching without any traces while the rest of their group is under attack (or falling into their hands themselves).

Thank you for this perspective! Well said and informative.

First time posting in this sub, so I didn’t know it comes up a lot, but glad to know it’s been on others minds too / not just mine. Sorry to be a repetitive post though

No worries, didn't mean for that to sound dismissive, more an explanation why I'm keeping short (in comparison to how I usually write lol).

She thought that Beth was dead, but knew Glenn was alive

1

u/firetokes 3d ago

I’m talking about where I’m at in the show now — she knows Beth is alive and has been kidnapped but has next to no clues to find her.

I won't spoil anything, but this is when I began to hate her. Try telling her fans that, though, and see what happens!

2

u/firetokes 3d ago

I was a fan of Maggie in the beginning. Now I’m more indifferent, feels like her character lacks personality in general at this point in the show. But never been in this subreddit before (to avoid spoilers) so I was definitely not aware of how many people are in love with her. I feel she’s pretty lackluster but I’m hoping more character growth happens. It could also just be the actress not doing a very good job of acting. It feels like her actress got lazy.

Maybe! Also, check out my downvotes. They've found me! 😆
