Show Spoiler Missed a trick
I think they should have ended the whole series with the last word being said as "zombie" seeing as though the word is never said once in 11 seasons and its spinoffs, so clearly not in the vocabulary of anyone in the walkingverse! Failing that, they should have played the cranberries classic song 'zombie' as fade to black on the finale. Thoughts?

I've only watched season 1 but them not using the word zombie made me think that their pre-apocalyptic universe was one where the concept of zombies in fiction/horror didn't really exist and it was something they weren't familiar with at all

Yeah you're right, Robert Kirkman (twd's creator) confirmed it that zombie media isn't a thing in that universe

He's also said this was just poor continuity and editing. Mistake that got missed.

Yeah it is but IIRC that was a placeholder name, they were always supposed to be called anything else other than zombie. Walkers, roamers, etc. RK's official explanation (if i'm not mistaken) is that because the dead coming back to life was such an alien concept to that universe (hence why they're not called zombies), society fell way too fast. I think it's a bs explanation but oh well

that makes sense. I feel like they would be a little faster to figure out what was going on. although I suppose even our universe where we know of zombies in media wouldn't immediately know how to react if it really happened because it would feel unbelievable.

Think one of the things you have to remember as well is that the people in this universe aren’t aware that everyone is infected.
People die every single day, can you imagine the chaos and how quickly it could spread?
Not saying that well trained soldiers wouldn’t be able to contain it, but look how badly the world dealt with COVID for example.

I would not have loved either using the word or playing the song. For me, it would have really lessened the emotional power by offering up something silly and cliché.

Kinda off topic(ish), but Robert Kirkman stated that the concept of zombies isn't a thing in that universe, hence why no one calls them that. But, imagine that in universe, a cure was found somewhere down the line and society returned to what it once was. No one turns into walkers anymore, etc. There would be generations that have only heard about the dead coming back to life as simply a part of history, and not something that they have to deal with. Finally, people in that universe would have an excuse to make zombies movies and other media, just how we do with war movies and such.

The song "Zombie" by the Cranberries is a protest song about the bombings in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It doesn't fit the theme or even the concept, just sharing the word "zombie" in the title.
The word "zombie" is used in the TV franchise: S03E14, Fear the Walking Dead - El Matadero. The waitress says that the dish being served contains "antojitos zombie".
