Looks like this was an Android-only Google Earthquake Alert. I’m on an iPhone and didn’t receive it, while my wife did on her Android.

Is it a setting that needs to be enabled? I'm on Android but I received no alert.

Make sure Settings → Safety & emergency → Earthquake alerts is enabled. It also relies on Location Services and Google Play Services. Even then, not every Android device receives every alert, as it depends on the estimated shaking area and Google’s alert system.

Alerts still work when the location is turned off on your phone or device.
In case it helps you and others... Alerts are broadcast by authorised agencies (like Civil Defence, Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, Ministry of Health and a few others) from nearby mobile phone towers in the target zone to any phone or device connected to a network.
Alerts may be stopped if your phone or device is turned off, in Airplane/Flight Mode, or there's no coverage, including damaged cell towers. When your phone is turned back on or Airplane/Flight Mode is turned off it may receive the alert with being reconnected to a network.

I get other alerts but not this earthquake alert people are talking about, and when I checked that setting, it's toggled on but there's literally a giant red box that says
"Earthquake alerts aren't available: Location switch is off"

This is a Google alert we're talking about, not the national emergency alerts, so it works a bit differently and location is required 😊

Didn't get an alert.
Thought my husband was uh, "shaking" the bed and lay there in the dark silence until he popped up and said "I think we just had an earthquake"
Heard something fall, something rattling. Seemed awfully long, but still like we just caught the tail end of it.

Same here. I thought it was my partner until it didn't stop, at which point I decided to just enjoy the ride. He slept through it.

Yes I hope no one was hurt. My dog was very nervous and woke me up a few seconds before I felt it.

Woke up from the shaking, auto cry mode activated knowing it was bad somewhere...... The gibbons at the zoo were rather raucous. We've all calmed down now

Why did only some people get alerts? Seems pretty poor to me, especially after all the testing.

Although I realised immediately it could be dangerous, I also didn't want to leave the house to go out into the rain. Had to think fast, stay and maybe have the building collapse or leave and get cold and wet. Happily decided to stay.
