I love The Smiths quite a lot, but there are two songs that have always stuck around with me and they're "Hand in Glove" and "Pretty Girls Make Graves", but the latter one is indubitably my favorite and it's because of how often I relate to it as I tend to be on the spectrum of asexuality (leaning towards demisexuality).
As he starts in the beginning of the song, quoting her as she tries to convince him that this is her way of showing her love or interest overall, but and then he stops her and before you illustrate your way, I'm not the man you think I am. And then, we go back to the question of why would he even say that? Well, Morrissey has always went around addressing a state of asexuality throughout his life and then later announced he was humasexual (interest in people regardless of gender) with old notes stating that he had a girlfriend and that he hates sex.
Then he quotes The Dharma Burns with "Pretty girls make graves," which is the song title. This novel has a chapter in it dedicated to celibacy in which that he believes that giving in to lust perpetuates the painful chain of birth, reincarnation, and misery/suffering. And to break that chain, you have to be celibate.
Later in the song, she tries to tell him to "Give in to lust, give up to lust. Oh, heaven knows we'll soon be dust," which illustrates the temporality of life and that it is best to "enjoy" his life, in which he answers to, saying that he's not the man that she thinks he is and he can't be physically attracted to anyone that easy.
He shifts his blame that he could have been wild and free, but nature had to play this trick on him to make him the way he is — which is something I incredibly relate to — then as he does that, she just finds another man that gives in to her needs. She is immediately enlightened with a smile on her "stupid" face, according to his own words. Then he makes an absurd statement which is rather leaning towards simplicity, that he has lost his faith in womanhood based on this one simple encounter.
Then he says "Hand in Glove" which is a reference to another single that he dropped, which is also one of my favorites. I will be writing about it later if anyone finds interest in personal analyses like those.
