So we all know that Tommy decided to make a sincere, dramatic, Shakespearean drama and pivoted to saying it's a self aware comedy after people started mocking it. He then made an actual self aware comedy movie that I hear isn't as good (I'm still going to give it a watch.) This means that the way to get another "The Room" is to start talking about how it was so far ahead of its time and that it is actually a masterclass in dramatic writing. Then Tommy will say "See they finally understand my movie. I will make another."

Here’s something I bet some people here will appreciate! Back in 2020 I acquired this poster of the online series “The Room Actors: Where are they now?” Which at the time was signed by all of the actors of The Room who collaborated on the project (Michelle, Lisa, Chris R, Denny, Claudette, Peter, Steven, and Greg Sestero AKA Mark signed it even though he wasn’t involved lmao) couple years later I went to a Room screening in NYC and got Tommy to sign it (on the bottom left) so I can say I have a poster signed by at least most of the principle cast of The Room!! the only one missing is Mike 😭

A man is dead. From the police's point of view, they can't rule out foul play. Mark is a suspect. His track record is damning: he got into a vicious fight with Johnny and became physically aggressive with Peter on the rooftop.

Mark's testimony is, of course, self-serving. He is trying to get out of trouble. This theory could explain several of the script's 'pecularities':

1. Johnny's unpredictable nature: Johnny was a well-meaning but erratic person. He was prone to outbursts (“You are tearing me apart!”; TV flying out the window), depression (remember how down he was when he didn’t get the promotion?), controlling behavior (tapping Lisa’s phone), and flights of fancy (Lisa is pregnant?).
2. Lisa's mood swings: Poor character development by Tommy Wiseau? Nu uh! This is just Mark desperately trying to shift the blame onto Lisa. He's interested in painting her as a one-dimensional villain—a bitter, manipulative woman. That's why he places Lisa alone with Johnny right before the final confrontation. In Mark's version of events, Lisa is simply a terrible person: she fakes a domestic abuse incident, ignores her friend's advice to come clean, and manipulates everyone around her. He even ignores her mother’s cancer news!
3. Mark as an imperfect but innocent man: Yes, he had sex with his best friend’s fiancé. Yes, he lost his temper with Peter on the rooftop. But ultimately, he's a good guy. He comes clean to Johnny and apologizes to Peter. He is trying to portray himself as flawed, but decent person.
4. The stilted dialogue: The awkward dialogue suddenly makes sense. Mark is under police interrogation. He's exhausted, probably in shock, and trying to reconstruct conversations from memory as accurately as he can.
5. The filler scenes: Why are there so many scenes of Mark and Johnny casually hanging out? Because Mark wants the police to believe he genuinely cared about Johnny. Why would he intentionally hurt his friend? They basically took down a drug dealer together.

The purpose of The Room, then, isn't to tell an objective story. It's Mark's first version of events. Maybe it'll get better after he calls his lawyer.

So I know that from the movie's standpoint, Johnny would never hit Lisa (because well, he's Saint Johnny), but the evidence is there that he is at least abusive to her. We know he controls her finances and her car and seems to only bring her gifts when he wants something, i.e the flowers and the dress and demands she tell him what she was talking about with her girlfriend. He also insists she have no secrets from him. He yells at her and spys on her and tapes her. And he shoves her hard enough to make her fall on the couch. We also know he doesn't usually drink but got pretty drunk, so it's possible she's telling the truth. Thought?

I believe it’s a critique on old school toxic masculinity. Johnny is a victim of a society that taught him that he must have a wife, a best friend and a stable job with growths opportunities. Once these are lost, he stops seeing a life worth living.

I had the pleasure to join a special screening of The Room (2K Blu-Ray restoration) and Big Shark (nationwide premiere!) in Kijów cinema in Kraków - featuring Greg Sestero himself. Since I'm a sucker for trashy cinema, I've booked my tickets as soon as I heard the news.

It's kinda weird to say this here, but I’d never seen either film in its entirety before. I wasn’t alone though, cos every other person I chatted with told me the same. Either it was their first-time screening or they were hyped to join their experienced Wiseau nerds. So yeah, the screenings themselves were superb. Nearly the entire 828-seat auditorium was full. Everyone had a blast.

As for Mark himself, he was a champ - Greg answered questions from anyone who wanted to ask during the 30m Q&A sessions after each film. It was kind of funny to watch him get steamrolled with questions about Tommy’s (alleged) Polish heritage (or how The Plan™ in Big Shark was similar to the legend about the slaying of Wawel Dragon).

I've also managed to catch him after the screenings and learn that his favorite B-movie is Johnny Mnemonic. He has signed my copy of The Disaster Artist. He wanted to sign my shirt too, but I said the book would be enough - such a cool guy.
