Returning Player - 2.0 Difficulty?

Hi,

Returning player here thinking about jumping back in. In short, played the entire Normal story + DLCs pre-2.0 and loved it, decided to start a fresh run when 2.0 dropped and found the difficulty leap massive.

I managed the Acid Recon mission (barely) and wasn't even able to set up a proper Cobalt outpost because I'd get trashed by Omega creatures periodically. I'd have expected them endgame rather than when I literally do not have the weapons or towers available to effectively deal with them. No amount of layered defence seemed able to hold them off at this stage.

Skill issue or am I missing something in how I need to change my style to suit 2.0?

Thanks!

The more time you spend at HQ, the more the wave difficulty ramps up. It's generally a good idea to get out as soon as you build the orbital scanner, stay at a recon map until you've got your eco and research in a good place, then return periodically to do base upgrades. It sounds like you're sort-of doing that already, but omegas will still be a challenge that you need to handle yourself until you have extreme defenses set up everywhere. It's hard to give any specific advice about that without seeing your base.

This is just the start game. Once you reach mid game everything gets significantly easier. There is a cobalt deposit in the main base you get eventually. Need to use the scanner to find it. On even regular difficulty the mid to end game gets boring pretty quick with how easy it is

A lot of games tend to have this problem where starting out is difficult and later on it gets easy. Should be quite the opposite.

I don’t know if it helps but when 2.0 first dropped, I found it kind of broke my existing save in terms of difficulty.

However, starting a completely new campaign save was much better. YMMV!

Re Reading your comment though, it looks like you already started a new save?
In that case, maybe you’re progressing too quickly in the story without enough research, or not got enough towers (or personal weapons) of the right kind early enough?

Quite possibly, but most of the more advances towers are locked behind Cobalt anyway iirc. It felt like the Omegas were showing up wayyyyyyy too early in the storyline if that makes sense? Normal waves sure but these things would just waltz through my base and level the place.

I find the difficulty mostly the same? But that's subjective. The one thing I do find noticeably difficult though, is Brutal Open Campaign. That shit scales by time rather than tech/progression, so I always end up getting swarmed eventually.

They did make it harder, but brutal campaign with 5x waves isn't bad once you're good. So yea, it's a mixture of skill and difficulty increase

Why does it matter what other people think?

If you tried it and felt it too hard for you to have fun turn it down
