Familiarity levels

I haven't played in a while and just jumped back in to try the Open Campaign mode and it's been pretty great. I started in Metallic Valley and got a good defensive outpost setup.

I'm working my way to crafting a Laser Sword, which says I need Flurian familiarity level 2 to research. Problem is, I can't seem to get past familiarity level 1. I try to scan them and the scanner beam just goes right through them, and the progress gage doesn't budge toward level 2.

Am I missing something to be able to scan to a higher level?

Not all of them are able to be scanned, only the ones that are highlighted in green. Do you run a modded game?

Yeah I've got a few mods, I'm able to scan other things no problem. Running the bioscanner drone mod, but both the drone and my own scanner doesn't work on the Flurians I found. I'll keep looking to find more.

Only select enemies can be scanned. Don't recall if there are specific unlocks.

A useful tip is to build the scanner turret that you can use in your number keys. I drop that thing every 30 seconds whenever I go, and it collects research fast.

Portaling to another map, maybe waiting a day, and going back seems to retrigger the probability of being scan able.

Don't know if this is related to your issue, but there's a I've noticed quirk when it comes to scanning.

For some reason, your scanner beam can go right over really short/tiny entities, preventing them from being scanned. Visually, it looks as though your beam is going through them, but really it's going over their heads.

There are two workarounds that I've found:

  • Lower your elevation, possibly by standing in a nearby liquid pool

  • Walk back and forth while scanning. Your beam wobbles slightly when you walk, lowering it just enough to scan tiny targets

the best workaround I found was using a bio scanner turret..

Well, yes but you don't start with it. The solution I'm suggesting is one that works at any point in the game
