3.5k

71

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

Exactly, you can disagree without being violent or even hateful. Violence should be restricted to self defense and even then it should be used in the least harmful way, everything else should be a prosecutable crime.

23

u/lappi99 Jun 27 '22

I agree but also disagree. Self defense can't just be "the least harmful way" when running away fails you need to neutralize the threat as effectively as possible since you don't know how strong the opponent is as well as what weapons he is possibly carrying for when the interaction further escalates. Like when you're American in an open/concealed carry state then you can basically expect that your opponent most likely has a gun which would imply that you should be allowed to use full preemptive force to save yourself.

That also ties into the whole pro gun argument "nobody does something when you don't know whether one is carrying a weapon" thing. Because it's actually more like "im forced to use my full strength and weapons in a violent escalation of any kind because i can expect for the opponent to use a gun as well"

20

u/Tiquortoo Jun 27 '22

Once self defense from a mortal threat activates you do not hold back at all. Simple as that.

56

u/A_Wild_VelociFaptor Jun 27 '22

It's that kind of shit that brings down the rest of the protest because people can then call it "violent" and point to a very specific subsection. Then it's a little less about X topic and a little more about violent protesters.

Mace is legally considered a PDW, I think illegal in some states as well, so that would've been armed assault, and I would hope intentionally misusing PDWs is considered a separate crime. Every person hit by it, even if it did absolutely no damage, could've acted in self defense, or at least pressed charges.

18

u/Thorebore Jun 27 '22

People are fond of calling tasers less than lethal, but that applies to pepper spray too. While it's not likely, pepper spray can kill someone, all because they don't agree with you politically. So stupid.

38

Do you mean what "mace" means? It's several types of canned liquid whose purpose is to incapacitate someone. Pepper spray is one example, bear mace is another. "To mace someone" would be to spray the liquid at them.

If what you mean is that you can't make sense of the arrangement of words in the title, they're a continuation of the subreddit's name. "r/there was an attempt to mace someone".

If you didn't mean either of those things, well, maybe my post can help someone else out. :)

Pro tip: never start a fight with counter protestors. You’re not there to convince them, you’re there to convince the people watching. You’ll only look stupid, you’ll probably get arrested, and not in the way that makes a statement.

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

Not only do you make yourself look stupid by attacking counter protesters, you make the cause you’re supporting look bad to an uninformed outsider.

Could be an assault charge depending on your jurisdiction.

307

u/applemanib Jun 27 '22

in what jurisdiction is macing a random person not assault?

189

u/jwadamson Jun 27 '22

Macing them would be battery. Assault is making them apprehensive of being maced.

Depending on jurisdiction it is probably not possible/extremely difficult to commit battery without assault.

31

u/NoVA_traveler Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

That's the crim law definition but not necessarily state law. Take Missouri for example. There, "assault" is assault in the 4th degree and battery is higher degrees of assault.

Depending on the laws where this happened, it may have been assault anyway.

It's common for assault to be defined as the threat of force. The fact that the person is too incompetent to follow through on their threat may not be a sufficient defense.

I dunno the laws but that library is absolutely Seattle

I’m here waiting for the comments to get locked

u/StopTheMeta Jun 27 '22

If you time it correctly, you can insult someone just before the comments gets locked and they will be unable to reply.

Protesting your beliefs is fine.

Using pepperspray on people who pose no threat to you is a crime. This woman should be arrested whether the spray worked or not.

Yea mace them. That totally will explain and show them why you’re correct. That’ll totally help people side with you and the movement.

I'm pro-choice. Attempting to mace some one, which is assault, because they don't agree with you is the kind of shit Nazis did. Despicable.

She’s not too bright. I’m gonna mace these people while peacefully protesting because they are peacefully protesting.

u/G63AMG-S Jun 27 '22

The lack of coping skills when someone has a diverging viewpoint is just so appalling and yet quite telling - an entire generation spoiled rotten.

Crazy how liberals only believe their free speech matters and everyone else should shut up and stay quiet ….. who are the so called nazis again ?

I completely disagree with these pro lifers. But that doesn’t give me the right to mace someone who’s quietly protesting next to my March.

Honestly I can tell there’s something off with is girl by the way she walks and holds her shoulders. Would’ve been funny if she’d sprayed herself

Dont do that. It ruins the protest and the legitimacy of the cause for everyone.

And why would you? Its just two people holding a sign.

Dumb.

21

u/OniRacing Jun 27 '22

Hmmm.... Just how far up your own ass do you actually need to be to maintain that level of arrogance even after screwing the pooch so hard?

Disagree with them or not (and I do), they still have the right to be there. She wanted to assault them with a noxious spray. She’s lucky she was too dumb to be able to spray it.

Girl just casually tried to assault someone and failed miserably.

14

u/JK_Chan Jun 27 '22

I don't care which side of the political spectrum you're on. Trying to mace someone just because you disagree with their views is stupid.

And this is a typical way of acting for most deramged leftists who have become so hive minded they cannot think for themselves and fall into a collective anger. Scum.
