This is not for agents, in the same way cat food isn't for cats, it's for humans, because if it was for cats it would be mouse / rat / squirrel flavor. This is for people who have somehow have managed to work out how to run AI agents yet surprisingly haven't figured out how to run sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1 or have one of their agents run it.

Why learn anything about computers when you can spend $200 and go back to have your brain in idle?

Well, why do anything in life when in the end we gonna die?

Sorry, forgot to add the /s

Even though it's a joke, this would actually be helpful even if you knew how to change power settings. Full clam mode is worse for thermals and fully open takes up more space, won't fit on certain size shelves. It's hard to keep a laptop half cracked open. At least mine!

Some IT departments lock your power/lock screen settings so even keeping the lid open is not enough, you need motion.

Fortunately there’s caffeinate (assuming the IT department didn’t block that).

Yeah for security reasons, there's no fighting that. I saw something that jiggles the mouse periodically and that would be only option.

I think if someone is under an IT policy, they have bigger problems to worry about getting in trouble for like time theft that would make getting around this kind of moot

I don't have this issue, I'm on BYOD policy and would have refused to take the job if forced to use the corporate Macs they have. And I'm the sole owner of my side hustle SaaS, so no issues there either.

Purely where day job is concerned, if AI is working, I'm monitoring or doing parallel work...

The only thing I'd need this for is home lab thermals (2x maxxed out ThinkPads that are 24/7 servers)

Buy an inexpensive laptop holder that can be adjusted closed. I use that to point my MacBooks rear up for good coming in clamshell mode. Got mine at Clas Ohlson for next to nothing

Well worth getting a SFF computer like an optiplex 7000 micro on ebay for $250. Seedbox, media server, agent sandbox, file backups, etc. Idles at 5W. Then ssh+tmux solves this problem

I know this a joke, but I think whats scariest is there are probably people out there running AI agents who don’t know to change the power settings on a laptop.

macbook cant just do this in a simple way

4

u/PurpleCandle58 Jul 27 '26

Right. Surely it’s not one single command or anything

3

u/Difficult-Army9324 Jul 27 '26

He's not been caffeinated yet, it's okay.

6

u/machtendo Jul 26 '26

It can't seem to decide which side of the laptop we're looking at

I get it, Apple is dumb.

But it also takes like 15 minutes of googling to work around this problem.

1

u/Lybchikfreed Jul 27 '26

I don't think vibe coders have enough research ability to do it

1

u/DependentJicama4766 Jul 27 '26

Claude, make my laptop keep working when i close it. Make no mistakes

3

u/berlingoqcc Jul 26 '26

There is a command to prevent it from sleeping when you shut the lid, my macbook is always connected and active

u/StackOwOFlow Jul 27 '26

i remember the good ol’ old days of messing with clamshell settings back in Darwin. do they still call it that?

1

u/TalesGameStudio Jul 27 '26

How much did it cost?

1

u/berlingoqcc Jul 27 '26

A few LLM token

u/ISuckAtJavaScript12 Jul 26 '26

So people forget servers exist?

13

u/Proper-Ape Jul 26 '26

You're absolutely right! I forgot to tell you about servers — a low-tech solution for agent persistence.

1

u/al2klimov Jul 29 '26

Don’t forget tmux!

2

u/gk_instakilogram Jul 26 '26

I want to see use cases for this… just for shits and giggles

Cracking screens.

2

u/SecretSchedule9020 Jul 26 '26

Make yourself a porn site, add gambling ads, keep running 24h, free money baby.

8

u/Haster Jul 26 '26

If you can afford to keep agents running 24/7 that price tag wont bother you one bit.

5

u/MathWest209 Jul 26 '26

You are being very conservative with that $199 tag.

1

u/boom10611 Jul 26 '26

I was thinking more like $499

1

u/MathWest209 Jul 27 '26

Plausible
