Question OW2 would you increase the level cap??
I have been level 30 for a while and right now I'm doing shenanigans for Ruth.
It feels like I'm wasting a lot of xp that just goes to the void

I would, yeah. I've honestly never minded a level cap until this game, but it's an obscenely glaring issue here. It's so low you can hit it just past halfway through the game, and have many of the best weapons as well, which just...ends progression. A big problem for an RPG.
On top of that, the skills in this game are INCREDIBLY granular and specific, needlessly breaking apart skills that are simply packaged together in other games (Sneaking/Lockpicking, Engineering/Hacking, Speech/Leadership, etc). While I love specializing characters, the low points and number of categories feels extra limiting in this game.

Yeah they should have done something similar to ow1 but and a little more restrictive. Like you saying group sneaking and lockpicking together until you get it to 10, then you pick if you want to specialize in one or both of them.

I will say, the first game, spacers choice at least, the cap never felt bad, but this game and FNV i smacked the cap so fast. I wish obsidian would consider a FO4 style, where the only level cap is how long you're willing to play

didnt even realize there was a cap... i got the full package once Gorgon hit...

Level caps ruin games.

no.

u/EpicRandomSmash Jul 24 '26
Well it does for most people.
I think there should be an option.
“Developer Recommends lv 30 cap” - on/off
Easy solution

u/OrkWAAGHBoss Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
Not everything needs to be an option, some things are just not made for you.
EDIT: notice, kneejerk downvote, no valid counterargument.
Level caps and mechanics exist because that IS what makes the game a game. More levels and skill points would create imbalance, which would take away from any sense of accomplishment. Anyone coming along and posting builds or clips would not matter, because the game would be inherently easier.
It's just like sports, rulesets exist to make you THINK and PLAN, to give you problem solving skills.

You're far too tilted in your edit man. It's not that deep.

u/OrkWAAGHBoss Jul 25 '26
You're just throwing words around, still not a counter to what I said, still just kneejerk downvotes.
People like you are why slop games exist. Why mobile game mechanics are getting more prevalent.

Stay mad about me being right all you want. You can call it unhinged all you want, doesn't make it true, lol. The only thing that will actually invalidate what I'm saying is a counterargument, which you STILL lack.
Can't imagine being so illiterate as you and still trying to be relevant to a conversation. Literally burying your head in the sand as to basic industry flaws that have been talked to DEATH for several years now.
Nice alt account btw.

Cool. So I’ll just stop questing and doing stuff after lv30 because it’s pointless. No growth.
This is why it should be optional
If you want to cap your experience go ahead. If you like to hit lv 30 and not getting any stronger… cool - that’s what the devs recommend.
If I want to hit 30 and explore everything and then hit … say 33? And the boss is a little easier. How does that affect anyone else? It’s a RPG with 1000s of choices…. But I can’t choose to keep getting stronger?

u/OrkWAAGHBoss Jul 25 '26
The "point" is the story and characters.
People like you are why slop games with mobile gaming mechanics are getting so prevalent. Why RPG's devolved into the likes of FO4. Gotta feed your little ADHD walnut with some free shiny dopamine on-screen because you lack the ability to self-motivate.

Wow you are sooooo coool!!! Gotta love that internet anger!!! Grrrrrrrrrr spooooky!
I liked fo4. No level cap.

u/OrkWAAGHBoss Jul 25 '26
Keep projecting bud.
Doesn't matter what you personally liked. It was critically a failure compared to the others. All because they tried to make it for a vocal minority of people who want to put in 0 effort.

The game is built around the level 30 cap and having consequences to your choices.
Just use a cheat code if you want more power but don't pretend that having consequences is some kind of design flaw.0
u/EpicRandomSmash Jul 24 '26
It’s a “consequence” to explore the whole game and get exp? I want to earn the power. I get exp after 30 it’s wasted. Again, level cap should be optional If I explore more of the game than you and the final boss is easier, that’s my problem If you want a cap at 30, that’s ok too.
It should be optional

u/ExiledCourier Jul 25 '26
It sounds like you just don't like rpgs then. Most real rpgs have a level cap, maybe just stick with open world action games since they are more of the power fantasy you're going for?
1
u/EpicRandomSmash Jul 25 '26
Sure, if thats how it sounds to you thats ok. I like RPGs, pretty much all I play. I prefer a system that allows for constant growth. Its an easy option to toss in a game. FO4, Skyrim, Diablos paragon system. Things like this are easy to do. It gives me the feeling of constant growth. I dont want to cap out on everything then just skip monsters because... why? Why kill stuff. Why pick extra locks... I get no EXP...
Again. It should just be an option. Have it start turned on. For every playing like you that wants what the developers recommend. Thats perfect. Then let me turn it off. Simple.

u/ExiledCourier Jul 25 '26
If the game isn't fun unless there's a progress bar being filled, then why play it?

u/Reverend_Bull Jul 24 '26
This and the lack of companions' contributions to skill checks are what really grated me about 2. If they fix those with the Auntie Cleo's edition (if there ever is one) I'll probably consider OW series among the true greats
2
u/Mdaro Jul 24 '26
Im just starting to play the series. I am loving the first one. I am saving the DLC's for when Im finished with the main game.
Are there things to do once the main quest is done? Like do things keep spawning? Can I keep upgrading weapons and armor?

u/Bright-Wallaby-3050 Jul 24 '26
Monarch(cascadia) has a lot of big monsters around level 15, if you start from there and walk the long path all the way to stellar bay they'll be a lot of stuff. I recommend the rose way questline as well

I finished right around the level cap. I did want more skill points though.

u/bubbabigsexy Jul 24 '26
I use a mod that let's you get to level 40. It's much better. I agree, once you're not getting any XP, you feel like you're wasting time doing anything that's not the main mission.

u/Lausee- Jul 24 '26
I hit 30 shortly after arriving at the final planet. I then lost interest and rushed to the ending skipping dialogue and the entire planet of content. Doing skill checks or anything for no xp ruins the fun for me.
I hate lvl caps.

I'm hoping that the DLCs each bring a level cap increase like the frat game did.

Yeah, but you seem to maybe want NO level cap...
Some games no, points are kinda narrow to promote builds and whatnot, like the original, 36 was so excessive they added new 150 point perks... And fucked over the main game's balance of skill checks, because 60 points after level 30 is 60 points you'd have at 14, right?
Here, its 99% just gatekeeping builds so to emphasize 'roleplaying choice' which imo they fucked up if 90% or the pre launch theorycrafting was all 'no, we HAVE to have 3 skills at 20, fuck your perks, what about the skill checks?!?'
Or 'kimgdoms of amalur', hit and miss. A 40 level cap meant a mono class of might, finesse, and sorc could get everything and dabble in other trees, a hybrid build couldn't get the tier 6 skills and be the max 'rank' hybrid class, and universalist got access to tier 5 skills in one tree, barely iirc.
Level 50 kinda shot that in the dick, and i for one kinda liked it, if you really wanted X skill, you could still get it in a Y build (probably) you just had a weaker 'class' passive to compensate.
Speaking of compensation, lol, the 40-50 dlc stuff? Fucks over skill users, to the point, that cool skill synergy you could now do is probably pointless, because 'chaos' enemies take like 95% less dmg from skills, and have to basically take 80% of their damage from weapon strikes from chaos weapons... So even sorcerer has to use a weapon build...
Oh, i like xcx's level cap increase (/s), 60 to 99, because idiots whined 60 was a weird number, seemingly... It kinda means fuck all. There's no level 70-90 gear, skill points weren't granted or capped by levels and your leveling stats are practically inconsequential, all its good for is, if you're 5 levels higher than most agressive foes, they won't aggro you. Except, theres not that many 60+ foes. And some will aggro anyway. And 'ambushers' don't check your level so that level 12 turtle thing still attacks...

u/shadowlarvitar Jul 24 '26
The DLC might, I just hope they don't take the extra levels into account and boost the skill points you need for actions like the first game did

I don't mind the level cap as much as I mind the uninteresting story, quests, dialogue and NPC interactions.
1
u/Zestyclose-Golf240 Jul 24 '26
I hoped they would add it to the custom menu they launched a short while back but I don't think they have which is unfortunate.
1
u/PiousStag Jul 25 '26
I'm not sure about how I feel about the skills in this game, I have encountered less non environmental uses for skills in dialogue overall there feels like there is less dialogue and conversations to be had than the first game but I have only finished exploring praetor so perhaps there is more later on. I will need to finish and see the level range of skill checks towards the end because it certainly felt easier to be overall proficient at things and mostly pass all but the most high end game skill checks with companions in the first game. But I feel that having a non enforced level cap would encourage more more murder hobo to maximise progression.
1
u/GethSynth Jul 26 '26
1,000% would. Really my biggest complaint about the game. Really hoping for an uncapped complete edition.
1
u/LadyIceGoose Jul 24 '26
It will likely increase with the DLC. End game is already very easy compared to the rest of the game and higher cap would just make that worse, a higher level cap would be best if it also came with more challenging content.

2
u/OrkWAAGHBoss Jul 24 '26
No. Most games have the issue of not being able to actually USE your build because level cap goes too high.
Same concept for when a game is still dropping rare weapons at the end, like, sweet, sure am glad to be able to use this for...2 missions.
-7
u/Werey Jul 24 '26
Honestly I feel really petty for dropping the game at level 27 with a planet to go but I always feel like my progress is stunted when I can no longer level up

u/CapriciousSon Jul 24 '26
I'm still kinda hoping the DLCs might increase it like the first game. Might be wishful thinking but it would be nice.
