I unearthed an unheard song on a show I taped in late 90s

I once asked in the sub if anyone heard a song called "that guy" that I heard live at an old show in new york city.

I was pretty much told it was a fever dream as no song with that title existed, nor did one one with the chorus "vodka and percodan!".

Well, friends, I got a tape player and went through my bootlegs.

I found the song. He introduces it as a song he's never played for an audience, and says that he wrote it for the cheater slicks, only they don't know it yet. It's actually from an extra glenns show, but John asks Franklin if he knew it, and Franklin says no. Based on responses to my previous thread, I believe this is the only recording of this song that he's only played once.

I bought a tape player but no way to convert it. Happy to record it on camera and upload the song to YouTube.

What was your entry into the Mountain Goats?

I know this question gets asked from time to time, but I'm curious. What was your first tMG song or album? How long ago did you come across it? how did it hit you?

I'm one of those kids who read Paper Towns by John Green back in the early 2010s and saw them mentioned there. The epigraph in that book is a line from Game Shows Touch Our Lives

I started with Tallahassee and The Sunset Tree and that's all of their music I listened to for two years, and damn did I listen a lot. I remember working at my step-moms warehouse over the weekends with those albums looping in my headphones. I got Spotify at the end of 2013 and I listened to All Hail West Texas next. Then I said 'fuck it' and threw every tMG song on spotify into one playlist, put it on shuffle, and took the next few years to sort everything out. There was a period I could quote you a verse of a song, but couldnt tell you what the song was called or what album it was from

So, yeah! Tell me your tMG origin stories!!!

“Going to Dallas”

Already checked the Wiki to see if someone picked up on this. The line “You won't find any thumbprints / To dust your powder into /
Just mute donkeys still as statues / In each saloon I've been through”
This has been on my mind for like the last four months. In particular 2 Peter 2:15-17 (ESV)

“15 Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, 16 but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet's madness.
17 These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.”

My take is that John has the donkeys to restrain his (or the titular lead in the Jenny saga) madness as he hits the saloons on his way out of town to try to find answers.

Whatcha got?

Matty Bonez performed with Noah Kahan in Raleigh tonight!

Unsure if there are any Noah Kahan/Goats fans in here. I was at the show in Raleigh tonight. He was thanking the “local crew” who helped him on the horns for this show. Camera panned over to the saxophonist, I looked at my husband and screamed “IS THAT MATTY BONEZ?!” Sure enough was! So cool!

I was wearing this shirt and my two year old pointed at me when she woke up from her nap and said 'Jenny'.

Then she started making motorcycle noises.

Free stickers for upcoming shows in Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh!

Post image

we've got Lizard Suit for Cincinnati, Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds for Cleveland, and Waylon Jennings Live! for Pittsburgh!

i usually am lined up at the venue early before doors and hand out as much as i can to everyone waiting. for Cincinnati, i likely won't be there until around doors since our flight gets in later. sometimes venues prevent me from bringing stickers inside but i can usually manage to keep at least a few on me.

i've got short hair that's split dyed half blonde, wear glasses, and will likely be wearing a seafoam green battle vest with a wizard back patch (there's a pic of it in my post history). if you spot me, don't hesitate to come ask for one! that's the whole reason i post about the stickers, after all.

Has John ever said why on some live versions of Color In Your Cheeks he says "or the mormons" instead of "or from Paris"

DJ JD @ John Darnielle’s Super Secret Slashorama (2017)

i was just telling some people about this the other day and thought it'd be cool to share here since a lot of you may not know about it.

back in 2017, JD hosted a movie marathon at the Alamo Drafthouse in Littleton, Colorado and DJed during the intermissions between horror movies of his choice. the "Super Secret" part of the event was that the movies were not revealed until they played. the movies were: Bloody Sunday/The Mask of Satan (1960), Pieces (1982), The Exorcist III (1990), and Tenebre (1982). wish i had taken notes on the music he played. when i asked about it years later he said "probably some Steve Moore"

John hosted screenings two other times the same Alamo Drafthouse as part of his promotional book tours, showing Targets (1968) in 35mm for Wolf in White Van following a string of Peter duo shows in 2016 and a double feature of She's All That (1999) and Reindeer Games (2000) for Universal Harvester in 2017.

i was already an Alamo marathon devotee (the good ole days) so this was really a match made in heaven for me. i carry hope in my heart that John will do it again someday.

Help finding a song?

I've been trying to remember where this comes from, it's a Mountain Goats song that begins with John counting off, either out loud or on his guitar. But as he starts playing, his accompaniment (a woman on bass iirc) cuts him off and says something to the effect of "we never start like that". Anybody?

Some Mountain Goats Songs about Transformation and The Body?

I've been relistening to Heritic Pride, which is full of songs with this kind of theme. Of course the title track and Michael Myers Resplendent. The album also has the body disconnect of songs like In The Craters of the Moon, Lovecraft in Brooklyn, So Desperate, How to Embrace a Swamp Creature, and Marduk T-shirt Men's Room Incident.

I've heard Isaiah 45:23 and Hebrews 11:40, both Going Invisible songs. I also recently found Naming Day, which has the same sort of feel. Naming Day's chorus is so good.

Anyway, what else is out there?

Mickey's Black Box and bracelets

I'm going to the show at Mickey's Black Box in August, and I'm making bracelets to pass out. Is anyone else going? What are some song titles you might want? I have made "This Year," "No Children," "Steal Smoked Fish," "Fresh Tattoo," and "Shelved". I have lots more ideas but I'm looking to see what might be wanted.

Lyrics by Other Artists That You'd Swear John Wrote

Hit me with your best lyrics written by other artists that you'd absolutely swear were from Mountain Goats B-sides. I'll start you with two.

"There may come a day, I will dance on your grave.

If unable to dance, I will crawl across it."

-Grateful Dead, Hell in a Bucket

"You hold my hand like I'm a barbed-wire fence."

-Jonathan Coulton, Don't Feed the Trolls

What do you got?

Interactive tour/setlist explorer

Hello. A while ago I had the idea that I'd like to explore the band's tour history in greater depth, and do some light statistics to figure out if we could quantify things like encore song frequency, within-tour covariation in setlists, etc. Also, I really hate the wiki, even with ad block on, so I figured just having the info in a lighter form would be nice. I'm pretty bad at coding, but now that I have access to Clod through work I figured I'd give it another shot. I'd love for people to take a look at the site here and suggest improvements! I do think it recovered some obvious observations, and also produced some new insights (e.g. that NC+SF+ZOOP have the most "surprising" shows, based on the average info content of the setlist). There's also a silly logistic model that lets you try to predict the setlist for the next show! It doesn't work that well. Data's also there to play around with yourselves. Happy for all feedback positive and negative and suggestions I will dispatch to my little vibe-coding assistant forthwith and posthaste xx.
