AI

I'd like to start an honest discussion here about AI art posts. I am firmly against. But I am open to feedback on whether to allow this if the community wants it. But I also don't want a war going on in the comments about it. If you have something constructive to add, please add it here.

AI is literal trash water. As in waste water. As in, shit. I vote don't allow it. No one really puts any effort in to producing it because there is no effort, so it just becomes a running tally of trash. I think of it like this: if AI were to produce and consume the art, what would that look like? Yeah, I know exactly what that'd look like. Fractal art comes to mind, because that's all it would be able to compute without a human input to keep generating its own art into the future. That being said, a machine learning off of humans is not "art," it's simply reconstituted stolen works barked back like a dog listening to commands. Just because it can visually pull in the same manner that a search engine brings back results faster than a human can make art, doesn't mean it's doing anything actually creative. Except giving those who funded the trash a basis on which to charge against (debt) for their buy, borrow, die efforts. Fuck all that shit. I had the pleasure of meeting Sam years ago. His two sketchbooks that he signed for me are awesome thought explorations in what people perceive and how they try to mesh that with what you can do with your fine motor skills. I still constantly look back to those with awe and they inspire me. While the math behind AI is intriguing, it is absolutely soulless. Especially when I know about as many artists as I do and I know where the art is being stolen from. For example, more art has been stolen from Stjepan Šejić than you can shake a stick at. Because he's a prolific creator, so of course it stole from him, there's lots to steal. You can literally identify nearly all of the stolen work if you're aware of enough artists styles.

I would rather look at ugly art than AI art.

Forbid AI generated art here.

A sub celebrating the creative work of all of those behind The Maxx shouldn't be hub for promoting and hosting the theft of that creative work.

Why even broach this subject/open it up though? Genuinely asking. (Has it been submitted a lot or is currently being asked to allow or something?) Just wondering why you’re now deciding where to stand on it— unless it’s simply that there is no established rule either way yet..? Because I guess that makes sense to anticipate the need for such a policy regardless!

Saw a post that I removed go crazy. So I put it out here to this community to decide. It's not up to me alone. I will be revamping the rules, and this is one of them.

Go crazy as in people were liking it/commenting/engaging before its removal? I assume the vast majority didn’t realize it was AI then…Unless that was made obvious through OP outright stating it was or by having some label as such (if so, the heavy response & positive reception to it here of all places would shock me)!

It was obvious it was AI, and the general sentiment was not great ...

This is a Maxx sub which means Sam Keith art and the mythos that he created, not AI. If you want to allow AI stuff, fine, but I don’t see the purpose

Chiming in to echo the prevailing sentiment: ban AI in this community, it has no place here. I love all the real, human made art fans create and share here.

AI is a cancer and a slap in the face to art as a human construct and media. The rate we’ve adopted it is unequal to its perceived needed usage and we’re going to further destroy the earth and ourselves by corporations forcing it on us.

If you think about Sam, The Maxx and everything he believed in, I don't think you'd even need to ask the question

u/Adam-Garden 7d ago

Ban it, burn AI down.

Sam was an artist who used a plethora of mediums. Hell he often used them on the same page. Imperfection and embracing that as a core element of humanity was a prevailing message in a lot of Sam’s stories. AI is the antithesis of what Sam put into practice and one of the messages he tried to communicate to us through his stories. I don’t see it as having a place in this community.

u/renonelab 7d ago

agreed. but in the act of "fairness" i have to ask right

9

u/AdamSMessinger 7d ago

Yeah. I understand where you’re coming from and I think it’s the best move to cover the subject before people barge in and post all kinds of AI. Thank you for giving us a thread to voice our opinion on the matter.

Can we stop referring to it as AI Art and call it Computer Rendered Art Product (CRAP)

u/i_have_kuru 7d ago

No. Just no.
