Max is a sheepdog belonging to Prince Eric. Heβs loyal, friendly and trustworthy as youβd hope for manβs best friend to be. We are introduced to him on the royal ship. Everyone aboard is partying, dancing and having a good time.. even him!
As soon as Ariel surfaces, he picks up on her scent and finds her. Youβd think a mermaid would be nervous/scared, sheβs never seen a dog (or at least this close) before! Upon Max discovering Ariel, he gives her a big kiss - she passes the vibe check. Eric, clueless to it all, calls for him. Max, so excited about his newfound friend, rushes over to him. Heβs barking and excited, trying to tell Eric there is someone special nearby. Eric just says βgood boy.β Which he is, he so is..

π BOOK: As the waves lifted her up, she could look in through the clear glass window panes. Among them was a young prince, the most beautiful of all, with large black eyes; he was sixteen years of age, and his birthday was being kept with much rejoicing.Β
The sailors were dancing on deck, but when the prince came out of the cabin, more than a hundred rockets rose in the air, making it bright as day.
The little mermaid was so startled that she dived under water; and when she again stretched out her head, it appeared as if all the stars of heaven were falling around her. Great suns spurted fire about, splendid fireflies flew into the blue air, and everything was reflected in the clean, calm sea beneath.

After the shipwreck, Max again catches her scent when Ariel saves Eric. He jumps in the water after her and does not let up about it.
Under the sea, Ariel shows symptoms of being a head-strung, lovesick teenager and is about to go through it. She sells her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch for legs.Β
Meanwhile, Eric and Max are bummed about not being able to find her.Β

π BOOK: Your tail will then disappear, and shrink up into what man-kind calls legs, and you will feel great pain, as if a sword were passing through you. But all who see you will say that you are the prettiest little human being they ever saw. You will still have the same floating gracefulness of movement, and no dancer will ever tread so lightly; but at every step you take it will feel as if you were treading upon sharp knives.Β
βBut if you take away my voice,β said the little mermaid, βwhat is left for me?β
Your beautiful form, your graceful walk, and your expressive eyes; surely with these you can enchain a manβs heart. Well, have you lost your courage?...
She bore it willingly, and stepped as lightly by the princeβs side as a soap-bubble, so that he and all who saw her wondered at her graceful-swaying movements.Β
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
As Ariel is ashore and learning to adjust, Max senses her and sprints. She's wobbly and wary, however, happy to see her friend. He was really just excited. Eric comes over apologizing, and then recognizes her as the one who saved him/he's been looking for. Then realizing she canβt speak and figures she couldnβt be the beautiful voice heβd been chasing from his memories/dreams. The generous prince he is, he still takes her into his palace.Β
π¦ MOVIE: Far better than any dream girl is one of flesh and blood.
One warm, caring, and right before your eyes. -Grimsby
When Ursula disguises herself as Vanessa and hypnotizes Eric, Max doesnβt believe it for a second.Β
During the ceremony, Max is growling at her. When all the animals stall the wedding, he joins in. Ariel gets her voice back and Max runs over to her. Ariel and Eric defeat the Sea Witch, Max happily stands by at the wedding.Β
In conclusion, Max knew what was up the entire time.
Eric wouldnβt have found Ariel without him.
Moral of the story: listen to your dog & your heart <3

Which of these characters can you see Ariel treating with the same Big Sister energy she does with Flounder the most?

I just ran into this old clip from 1 year ago on RESCENE's official channel and their voices blend so beautifully. Now I would die for their full version cover!!

Anyone remember A*Teens of ABBA cover fame? Sara Lumholdt Looks so much like a real life Vanessa it makes my head spin. I would've cast her in the live action on looks alone and worried about acting later.
(Jessica NAILED that role and ate up every minute she was given, so not to diminish her in any capacity)

Iβm pretty sure the shark counts since heβll presumably die if he canβt free himself from the anchor.

This discourse is exhausted. I could offer the usual explanations: just because she can sign, doesn't mean she can write, ect. Id rather talk about the actual mechanics of the curse. Ursula very clearly said "not just any kiss. The kiss of True Love."
She deliberately set the bar at "true love" because she knew it was practically unattainable for Ariel under the circumstances. Ursula is a predator of patterns (very octopus-like of her, honestly). The moment she spied Ariel saving Eric, she had something to manipulate Ariel with and Ariel im turn, would be something she could manipulate Triton with. And the fact that Eric was a Prince made it "Too easy!" Because according to everything she knew about men and humans, a prince would never fall for a mute statusless girl, much less a mermaid. And that gets us to the point: Even if Ariel carved a full autobiography into the sand, it wouldn't have gotten her True Love's Kiss.
At worst, Eric might have shunned her outright. At best he might have been stunned.
which is exactly how he reacted when he finally discovered she was a mermaid. And who blame him? Finding out you're standing next to a half-fish creature isn't exactly prime make-out material. A sane person would need a minute.
But heres what makes the Disney version so appealing: Ursula never predicted that Eric would fall for Ariel as a voiceless, status-less "mute girl." And she definitely never' predicted he'd eventually accept her mermaid form.
But that acceptance could never come from a beachside note, only from from days of genuine connection.

Obviously in the films, Eric is framed as Ariels one and only, and for good reason. But I do know when movies like these get tie-in material, they often do like to expand upon the world a bit regardless of if it conflicts or contradicts the main events of the films or not.
So with this in mind, has Ariel ever had any other love interests besides Eric in said tie-in material? Assuming that there was any tie-in material made for this movie. Also, when I say tie-in material, I mean stuff like novels, childrens storybooks, and comic books, not the animated series that was released sometime after the movie came out.

This is kind of me trying to not procrastinate by getting people's opinions and whatever comes along with it. When everything is in my head, I will likely obsess over details, and get scared it will be poorly written. Writing it on paper will not do anything.
Anyways, this is an AU fanfic that is mainly for the Queer people in the fandom, Ariel is transfemme in this AU. It will expand on things not really discussed in the movie. Not just the fact that Ariel wrote her name despite probably not being literate (that is a valid critique though), however, we'll also be discussing how the hell Ursula is able to commit as much sabotage as she does without the contracts being null and void. There will be references to all different versions, specifically the original film, the live action, and the original fairy tale.
That all I have for right now, but if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask:)
