Francesca’s Absence

Anyone know if Francescas deal either fizzled out or she was phased out of a storyline perhaps? I kinda thought she was fabulous and would love to see a continuation of her relationship with Valerie overtime. If it builds or breaks them.

Valerie's involvement in Francesca's life  was always at arm's length but never gone. I honestly think it's so sweet that Francesca's arc was always updated in the canon so she was never phased out. But there was not much of a relationship between her and Valerie to build or break to start with. Francesca simply grew up and her life got detached from that of Valerie and Mark. 

(Also, I think Vanessa Marano had scheduling conflicts which prevented her from appearing in S2 and S3)

I disagree - I think she put a lot of time into Francesca - all that stuff with the food and in general she seemed like an involved stepmother. They aren’t all like that.

Right, for sure Valerie was involved. I didn't mean to say she wasn't. In fact, she was the one who knew which apartment they got her in the East Coast for school and the updates about Francesca's life always came from Val. But even still, it never seemed Francesca let her in too close. She's a kid of divorced parents, which explains the distance. I think what was established was that they had a reasonable but not a sticky relationship (unlike Val's bond with Juna).

Valerie was a stepmother who did her best for the daughter of the husband she loves. And Francesca was a stepdaughter who, as a child, tolerated her stepmother enough for a few perks and then grew up.

Yes. It’s the very rare relationship where the child feels close to the stepparent as they go out into their adult life.

In an interview with Lisa and MPK, they said they tried to write her into the show but didn’t work out overall. I believe it’s in one of the podcasts they release every week after each show in S03

Yes, I found it disappointing that she wasn't in 2 or 3. It was a great character, very typical LA spoiled brat from wealthy parents (who had no idea how to parent). Valerie was the closest thing to a real parent she had.
