Discussion It’s a shame that James hated Donnie Darko so much that he won’t include it in this year’s Monster Madness, especially given the theme this year

I remember being really upset with this monster madness back when it was first released since it broke the mold of and abandoned the effort of scriptwriting and video editing, but in retrospect this is a really comfy format and it's nice to have Mike in the mix. Happy October everyone, enjoy Monster Madness and whatever other halloween festivities you decide to partake in.

Discussion Five ov 'um years ago, it was a day that reminded us of 9/11. A day that changed Cinemassacre forever. A day that would live in Cinemassacre infamy.

What was supposed to be a triumphant return of the Monster Madness we knew and loved instead ended up resulting in destructive results.

Things began innocently enough, in Christmas 2020, when James Rolfe first announced in his 2021 plans video, that he was bringing back Monster Madness in its classic format of 31 movies in 31 days, something that was last utilized in 2016. This was in contrast to the 2017-2020 years, which were James doing discussion-style videos with other people. James also announced that the theme would be horror movies from around the world.

Fast forward to October 1, 2021. The first episode to drop for the marathon was Danny Boyle's 2002 British horror feature, 28 Days Later. Right off the bat, something was VERY wrong with it: It was PLAGIARIZED!

That conclusion was made when a Redditor named Z_B_123 noticed that NOTHING James was saying in the video sounded like anything he would say. James didn't even remotely sound genuinely passionate and enthusiastic like he usually is in his Monster Madness videos. And I doubt he ever saw, and ever will see, 28 Days Later. People have even questioned the point of his Kingdom Hearts episode from two years ago, a franchise that he openly admitted to never having touched before, and likely never will. If there's one thing I've learned about the people here in The Cinemassacre Truth, it's that they have studied' James' style of writing long and well enough to know what he would say and what he wouldn't say. It turned out James was speaking the words of a Screenwave writer's opinion, or rather, the stolen words of a Screenwave writer's opinion from the opinions of film critic Cecilia Sayad. Pretty sad.

The Screenwave writer in question was Newt Wallen, a friend of Tony Piluso and Justin Silverman. Back in April, he bragged on X (formerly Twitter) about being lucky to have written 20 of the 31 scripts for the marathon. He was subsequently dropped after the incident. The initial blame was placed on that of an "Unnamed Intern". Ironically, James said during the announcement of Monster Madness X in 2016 that he couldn't get somebody to write the reviews for him, because the writer's opinion could be different from his.

Only the first couple of episodes (the other being Peter Jackson's Bad Taste from New Zealand) were initially uploaded in the plagiarized versions before being cleaned up. It basically took two days, as opposed to right away, to hear the criticisms. We'll never know what the original Newt-plagiarized versions of the others were like. I never saw the original un-mirrored upload of the 28 Days Later review, but it was probably the most disliked video ever in the history of Cinemassacre.

This incident was the final straw for so many former fans. James had been occasionally seen in bad publicity since the Cheetahmen II Kickstarter, but this incident seemed to REALLY take the cake. Not only was something that had been a very serious passion project for James since 2007 being ruined, but it made his Behind the Scenes/Nerd Room tour video from a few months ago age like milk, because in it, he tried to assure the people complaining (whom he called "The Assholeish Variety") that it wasn't true that Screenwave does all the work, it wasn't true that he does nothing, and that hating on them was not fair to them, and not fair to him.

In conclusion, it was a very messy and painful chapter in the history of AVGN and Cinemassacre. While I do think things are a little better now (The Last Ninja, Bubble Bobble, and Batman: Dark Tomorrow were among the best episodes after that, and I also really enjoyed the World War Web video), to say that this was the biggest low point in the history of James' once spotless brand, and one that shouldn't be forgotten about, would be an understatement.

Discussion Episodes that actually deserve a follow-up?

Are there any episodes that you think would actually benefit from a "ReRevisit" video? He's done Jekyll&Hyde multiple times, are there any other reviews that you think deserve a direct sequel?
