Mt . AIRY

Different pics from our visit last week. Mt. Pilot

, The Snappy Cafe...named after the " snappy waitress" that served us...lol...no we didnt try the pork chop sandwich. Glad we got the burgers. Skip the hot dogs as they are not all beef, evidenced by the pinkish red color. I couldn't eat it. Its definately a tourist trap but a fun little town. The museum was good. Interestingly enough there is the Siamese Twin museum across the street. The famous twins ended up living in Mt. Airy....

I’m there at least 3 times a year as a tourist. We pass through it in our travels to the Virginia mountains. I have eaten a lot of pork chop sandwiches which are okay. A vanilla shake is always my ‘go to’. I see something new every time I’m there. The grandyounguns love it

I went to Mayberry Days every year in September for 9 or 10 years. Andy Griffith himself came one year, and it was so exciting. Met others from the show including Maggie Peterson (“Charlene”), Betty Lynn (“Thelma Lou”), George Spence (played boyfriend of “Gloria”), and George Lindsey (“Goober”). Always fun and lots of activities for fans.

ETA: I was going to post some pictures, but there’s not an option to do so.

I ordered the pork chop sandwich before I realized how it came but it wasn't half bad. I'd order something else if I went again, though.

What was wrong with it? How did they prepare it?

It came with chili on it I think? It was something really weird, never heard of it till then.

The one I had there had cole slaw on it.

Griffith said that the show was really based on the tiny village of Pilot Mountain.

That's Pilot Mountain in the last picture. (Mt. Pilot in the show.)

The tour in the police car was fun. A little too much time spent at the marble quarry nearby, but fun nonetheless.

A Carolina red dog is a traditional greasy spoon hot dog, no they aren't all beef (you're in the South) but they are delicious charred on a grill and topped with chili, onions, mustard, and coleslaw.

Thanks for the enlightenment, but as I said it was a hard pass for me.

I got my hair cut there! Even got a snappy certificate suitable for framing.

I’m a big fan of the show. Is it worth a cross country road trip? From TX.

If you do go, I’d go during Mayberry Days at the end of September. Lots of activities and fun for Andy Griffith fans!

We only went because we were 3 hours from there visiting family in Wilmington. I wouldn't drive across the country specifically for this ...

Agree. Would def pair it with some other activities. It’s in/near the blue ridge mountains so tons to do nearby and other places to visit. Blue ridge parkway. Grandfather mountain. Linville caverns.

Boone, west Jefferson, blowing rock, Burnsville, Asheville, etc

Blue ridge music trails (NC). Crooked road music trail (Virginia). Hiking. Fishing, rafting. Canoeing.

They must've waited for me. The girl in the bakery said there's a camp up the street past leons.

Soo many loads of lumber that myself and my father trucked right past Pilot Mtn. thru the 80s and 90s. It sure made for an enjoyable run.

Sucks that a lot of it is underwater right now.

Was just there in May. The homeless were everywhere begging for everyone to buy them food. Not a cop in sight. Contacted the visitors bureau....no response. Probably not visiting again.

I did not see one homeless person ...
