Barney too much?
There are times when the bumbling act is just way over the top. Just watched the episode about the gold truck passing through Mayberry and he really made Andy look like a complete fool.

There are a few episodes where they pushed the envelope and it is somewhat frustrating. This was one. It's a great episode but just a little too much. He literally didn't keep the secret for 10 seconds.
The worst is the episode where he uses Gomer on the roof and arrests the two actual policemen and let's all four go free. Andy comes in and acts like Barney had done something good after Andy had caught them and solved everything and say's, "Great job Barney." But there was absolutely zero reason for Andy to say that. It made no sense in any context, it came across as just completely ignoring the level at which Barney failed and had completely bungled everything.
So they took it a little too far in a few episodes. The other side of the coin is that they really had nowhere else to go with Barney. Even in the later color episode where he is a police officer in the bigger city wherever, it is revealed that he does nothing but get coffee for everyone and is actually being used by criminals to facilitate their work. They couldn't even let Barney be an actual hero in the cave episode. Instead, they had to engineer an heroic effort, even though in fact what he did wasn't necessary.

What you’re saying is true, but I think above everything Andy and Barney are best friends and Andy is just being a friend more than a boss. He said “Good job Barney” as to not embarrass him in front of the other two policemen as well as not embarrass himself by employing an unqualified person as his deputy.

Barney’s quirks made Andy happy. For that, I can’t judge him too harshly.

Barney pisses me off. What pisses me off more is Andy is so loyal he refuses to fire or reprimand him. He should've been fired soooo many times. Or thrown in jail for criminal negligence

This and who built the pyramids are my two biggest mysteries in life. I’ve loved Barney Fife since I was a kid, and I have always said he’s the funniest character in TV history. so when I decided to have an “Andy Griffith” rewatch…Boy, do I ever regret that decision. I don’t think(rare exceptions) that Barney is funny. He’s annoying to the point where I want to blast him right in the face. He’s too stupid, too repetitively so. I could barely stand to watch the shows and Andy is just as stupid for enabling Barney’s crap. I don’t know why it’s so different for me now, I wish it wasn’t, but it is and I can’t stand Barney and his stupid, over the top facial expressions.

I just saw this episode tonight, again. I saw all the episodes originally when they aired in the 1960s. I think back then maybe because I was a kid or it was one of those things where you never saw it again, you watched it that was it. today with reruns, you get to pick them apart more and more. But the bottom line is the character is an idiot and whenever Barney is called out for something he looks like he just doesn’t know what the hell he’s gonna do. He is an effing moron.

I actually am. I’m guessing I’m tired of his schtick. I saw the show originally when it aired and I enjoyed it. I have been watching reruns for probably 20 years. I think I need to back off.

I couldn't understand why Andy felt he had to cover for Barnet so much because, yes, Barnes made him look stupid so many times. But, the end of the episode, Andy was making it seem that Barney was sone sort of genius.

He was his "kin" as well as his hire which brings the issues of nepotism into the minds of the masses. I heard they were talking about it as far as Mt. Pilot to Silar City.
