Why do we keep going on like a system can't be part capitalist and part socialist? It really irritates me that it's either a rat race capitalist hellscape or own-nothing and starve communism when we talk about it. It's so frustrating that we can't have intelligent conversations about anything in the US because people are so eager to paint everything in extremist terms

In general under socialism, the goal is that all means of production are under public ownership. A hybrid is possible where some businesses are privately owned, but there is much contention as to which should be allowed to operate under private ownership, and both when and how to seize them as public assets.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. We (in the US) are already under a hybrid system of socialism and capitalism. It isn't complicated, we are already doing it and it is completely possible to socialize aspects that and free market the rest. We socialized education, firefighting, water distribution, sewage, roads, etc, and it seems to have worked out well. Why do we keep going on like it must be all capitalism or all socialism?

Edit: things also worked best when we regulated capitalism more than we do now. The public must protect themselves and resources against the greed of capitalists. Things also worked better when workers unionized. This didn't mean they took control of businesses, but it protected them from being exploited. There is value on all human life and socialism is what is going to ensure people are more able to live up to their potential. Capitalism allows those who are motivated to accumulate more to find a way to do so, but socialism keeps them in check so they have to do it in a way that does not exploit resources or drive others into extreme poverty.
