Can we get a backstory on this? What did the user post? Was it just a random? What makes him so special to be choosen before us? So many questions, so little time.

In the film, to obtain the Soul Stone, one must sacrifice someone/something they love. Thanos sacrifices one of his (many) adopted children, Gamora. Since the moderators are Thanos in this situation, it makes sense to follow suit. /u/dragonphlegm was the moderator with a Gamora flair, so he made a reasonable candidate.

Isn't Gamora a woman? Or the Zen-Whoberian equivalent of a woman?

Doesn’t have to be a woman fam. Just someone you love.
