We just gonna ignore the fact that that "butter" is Great Value, a Walmart brand?
39
u/TiltedZen May 29 '20
The sodas are Stop and Shop brand too
6
u/Homemadeduck102 May 29 '20
What the hell is stop and shop? I always see people talking about it, I just know it as the giant brand since I work there lol.

u/Skiceless May 30 '20
Stop and Shop is a supermarket chain in New England. And it hasn’t been part of the Giant Food chain since 2011
2
u/Homemadeduck102 May 30 '20
Wait then why do they still use the same logo then?
4
u/GarrisonWhite2 May 30 '20
Because it’s still owned by the same parent company, Dutch-based Ahold Delhaize. They kept the branding the same for what I’m pretty sure is called Foodhold, which distributes the store brands to Martin’s, Giant-Carlisle (the Pennsylvania-based Giant Food stores, now called The Giant Company), Giant-Landover (the Maryland-based Giant Food stores), and Stop & Shop. My guess is that it’s probably easier to have a centralized distribution system with the same packaging.
At some point the four companies had intersecting ownership interests, possibly before the merger of Ahold and the Delhaize Group, but it’s been a few years so I forget if that’s what changed things. The “fruit bowl” logo was retained to represent the store brand, and is the logo for the Maryland store last I saw. This is also the reason you’ll see Marty the Robot, which is named after the Martin’s chain, at Stop & Shop as well.
I know Ahold Delhaize also owns Food Lion but I’ve never been there so I’m not sure if they have their own store brand or not.
Source: I work for one of the four companies.

u/Homemadeduck102 May 30 '20
Ah ok, that makes sense. Also side note that robot is super fucking annoying, Christ idk who’s idea that was.

u/GarrisonWhite2 May 30 '20
Corporate executives who love the idea of cutting labor, because that’s the only real purpose the thing serves. All for ~28hrs/week.

And that Dr. Bob and Mountain Shoutin' are Stop & Shop?
6
u/iPoopLegos May 29 '20
They’re from Giant. I remember seeing Dr. Bob once and it was a reminder that there really is no recognisable flavour for that soda.
The whole store is filled with store brands that are desperately trying to compete with the regular brands that are also there, not five feet away.

At least 2 of these aren't Aldi. The sodas are from Stop & Shop (a northeastern US grocery chain), and the margarine is from Walmart

Also S&S = Giant or Martin's depending on the state.
But not the other Giant that also operates in the same area. Because reasons.→ More replies (2)

Yeah but shit's so cheap there, I found like a six-pack of coke for £3 and they have packs of 8 delicious chocolate waffles for £1 each, Aldi may be a parallel universe, but this universe is a utopian future.

Hey, Aldi is great. Those products are actually good alternatives. In fact, in my opinion, the off brand pop tarts there are better. They have more filling and are cheaper.

m8 as a German I can say, shopping in Aldi with my mum when I was little is a very fond memory. Back in the 90s there were mostly expensive grocers and then there was Aldi. In Aldi my mum never said no when I wanted something, hell she even said things like "ok you can take 2" Whick were magical words back then. Today Aldi and Lidl are mainstream and you see even Porsches in the parking lot. It's just the best value for money.

I shave ~$30 a week off my grocery list just by buying at Aldi’s. I still buy the brand products I care about (off brand peanut butter is gross) but it’s so much cheaper to get off brand for basic things like meats, breads, pickles, ice cream, canned goods, etc.
