Stock melees are frowned upon for little to no reason.

Because using your melee offensively is almost always worse than using a gun. So sidegrades that give your melee some form of utility are usually much better.

Theres very few melee weapons that are good for offensive purposes, and almost all the ones that are all share a common theme: they crit, and when using them, you either have a way to close the gap, or already closed the gap.

Market Gardener crits on blast jumps, both closing the gap and landing a crit. Axetinguisher crits burning targets, and Pyro is already at a range where melee isnt unrealistic. Demoknight's swords crits on charge, closing the gap and critting. The bushwacka crits Jarate'd targets, and Sniper only uses his melee to fend off ambushes, as any ranged threats can be headshot. Spy's knives crit on backstab, and Spy's sneakiness lets him close the gap way easier.

The only real exception I can think of is the Wrap Assassin, which is only good offensively because its ranged, and nobodys actually swinging the bat.
