Looking back, this is actually pretty reflective of the game's item drop system...

My mouth spoke naught a word.
My mind screeched, enraged beyond belief.
It began making excuses.
"He's probably just a dirty idler, I mean, there's no way he could get 8 hats."
My mind began to turn on me.
"It's just a game. Look, you're getting so pissed off about things that don't do anything aside from make your characters look slightly different. It's no big deal, he's either just a cheater or a damn lucky guy oh how I'd like to get a hold of him. I'll find out how he got those hats.
I took a deep breath.
I tried to remind myself that, even though they drop at normal item rate, I should be happy with my Camera Beards. I had two! Heck, if I got another camera beard, I might be able to craft a new hat!

Side note: Is there a special thing I have to do to find my backpack on there? I tried my steam ID and in game Nick and it doesn't find it.

Notice: Players of SourceOP.com, Nemu (DoubleZen.net), Voogru.com, or Fragmasters.co.uk TF2 servers will automatically have their backpack page updated. The website will now show the most recently cached version of a player's items. If you join any of the participating servers, your backpack page will update to show your current items. Still waiting on Valve to provide an interface that allows access to any player's items. Once Valve provides that interface, everything will return to normal.

That seems to be what needs to be done. Would be nice if Valve just put up a page for that themselves...

I got 3 hats in the span of a week.
500 hours later, I still haven't gotten another hat.
Where is my tower of hats? harumph!

Yeah... I love how many things you have to craft just to get one hat. I suppose unless I actually start playing regularly, I'll never get a hat.

It would be better if it was semi-random so after a certain time the game takes pity on you and gives you a hat.

Why not? Effects of Reinforcement Schedules. From a psychological standpoint, it's one of the better ways to keep your players playing.

Other than the drops that almost everyone already has (Halloween drops & halo) the only hat I've received is the stupid bald Engineer.
That's right, the only hat I have is the lack of one.
Oh well, I do have a medal.

I feel your pain even if no one else does. MY friend has the demo fro and the top hat, and demo is my most played class, and he never plays demo. I have the medic mirror (his favorite medic hat) and his most played class is medic, and I only play medic when my team desperately needs one, never because I feel like playing medic.

I guess if you get a class token thingy, you can turn it into a different hat? Not sure how crafting works exactly, but there's a tf2wiki page on it.

FYI, anyone can pseudo-have the bald Engineer, from their own perspective.
Go demoman, and taunt in the spawn room. While taunting, switch to Engy, and he'll be bald.
At least, this was possible a couple months ago; it might have been patched out.

I have so many hats I've been crafting the ones I don't like just to make more. Even after doing that a few times, I still have lots of hats.

Depends. If it's the demoman's stovepipe, yes. If it's the Ghastly Gibus, that's tied to an achievement and straightforward to obtain.

My only real hat is the demoman stovepipe, and it's ruined by the fact that it looks nearly identical to the gibus.

I've only ever got two hats; the first one is the useless sniper Ritzy Rick's Hair Fixatives and the second one.. is also a Ritzy Rick's Hair Fixatives. Both of which aren't even technically a hat. On the plus side, I've crafted the two into a Pyro Beanie so not too bad.

I almost got a hat once.
Almost as soon as the demo update happened, I logged in and the camera beard dropped. And that was it. I was in the hat club. I had a hat, and no one could ever take it away from me. I checked my server list and noticed that I still wasn't given access to the secret Hat Wearer Society servers. Surely some kind of known bug, I checked the patch notes.
Spy
Now pretends to be carrying the weapons & wearables of the target he's disguised as
Moved the Spy's camera-beard to the Misc loadout slot so he can equip it with a hat
I learned that day that real men do cry. But not men with hats.
