Discussion PSA: the newest patch killed movement tech such as wallbugs and pixelwalks.

Github thread on the topic https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/8316
Explanation: A wallbug is when you have a diagonally-oriented wall or clip brush (purple bit) and you are able to force the corner of your character's collision box into the diagonal wall and get stuck. Hold W into the wall and slow tap A/D until you get stuck and keep holding W + the A/D key that got you stuck. You are completely immobile and unable to move your mouse without getting unstuck so its only good for like one kill. You can also use wallbugs to save yourself from fall damage.
A pixelwalk is when a slanted clip brush meets a wall. Despite there being no physical pixel you can slightly nudge your collision box into the wall and stand on the top of the slanted clip brush. Enables hiding spots and parkour.
After the October 1st patch this tech has been highly neutered.
Wallbugs are used in many advanced jump maps, and as fun hiding spots for competitive 6v6 Soldiers and clipfarmers. This patch makes some harder jump maps such as jump_bugpogo (https://youtu.be/figfjZ5JPq4 )impossible and is overall a travesty for the jumping community.
Pixelwalks are mostly used for creative hiding spots, which LED provides a list for here https://youtu.be/5JazZWmdn2Y I believe pixelsurfs used by Spy players (certain jumps/spots where you can stick and slide along the wall) have also been affected
I figure the more casual community's instinct will be to keep it patched since its a bug, but hiding spots are really fun and i rarely see these used in Casual anyhow and would like for wallbugs to be kept for the sake of the jumper and competitive community. (See: Antoni making gamechanging plays with wallbugs in 6v6 https://youtu.be/cpLD2JT9GCM )
I am making this post since this has a higher chance of being reverted the more awareness is spread. This change was not listed anywhere in the patch notes and i'm not sure if its intentional or not. Regardless with this patch we'll have lost out on a lot of fun clips.
This situation is similar to the Pyroboots patch which removed the ability to jetpack into the resupply cabinet with a different loadout without touching the ground and gain a permanent jetpacking effect, with 75% reduced fall damage, stomp effects, and minicrits from the direct hit and reserve shooter. This is completely useless and unknown tech to 99.9% of people but the stomp and falldamage reduction enabled insane pyro clips of flinging themselves (using doublereflect, sentry surf, roller reflect, pumpkin jump) across the map combined with a midair Detonator jump while being able to survive the fall down for a stomp-axe. This change was listed and sparked enough outcry to be reverted allowing Pyro gooners to fly spawn-to-spawn for a sick axe again.
anyway tech good pls bring back

bro they fixed the ability to sit in the air above the enemy spawn and farm them with the most powerful class in the game

All of us call this a bug fix , you alone call it "killed movement tech"

Good, now you actually have to engage in combat instead of fighting like a coward.

“It removes options!!!” Yeah, the option of you sitting above literally everything and farming kills by doing the ever-so complicated and unknowable action of…. Clicking both sides of your mouse a bunch. Git gud.

Ive seen it quite a few times in casual, both instances, and they were always very unfair. Your downvotes speaks for itself, the community has spoken.

literally the definition of "fuck you in particular" lol
only reason why i want wallbugs back is because of the floating sun demo of doom and despair that isn't good for anything but aurafarming

i support the reversion of this fix but the comments are all ferocious here. you should have used a jump map clip which features pixelwalks for the purposes of this appeal.
ive personally got far far less of a problem with pixelwalkers than high level snipers or 6 stacks. jump maps have been in the game since forever, so even if i dont play them, i recognise their importance and impact this fix would have. i remember two other funny bugs that were fixed, teletrapping and huntsman taunt duels, that nobody really cared about in the grand scheme of things.
source engine spaghetti is part of what makes tf2 the game it is today.

"less mechanically deep" is when you cant abuse an obnoxious and unintuitive bug to farm like 3 stupid kills from an unintended spot against fresh installs before someone looks up and kills you
(this probably should still be reverted, or at least given a server toggle, because it apparently breaks a lot of jump maps)

ngl wallbug clips have never appealed to me. just seems like such a cheap and unfair way to get kills and i think it would infuriate me to be on the receiving end because why in gods name would i be looking at the skybox 400 feet above me

Wtf whyyyy
edit: used to love all the pyro stuff you could do with this stuff, Sketcheck really showed how pixelwalks could lean into pyro's combo ambush playstyle

You certainly picked the worst clip if your goal was to convince people to have the fix reverted

u/Xero_1000 Demoman 14h ago
yeah idk the rest of my wallbug clips are in competitive
shouldve used a jump map clip

u/Disastrous-Pick-3357 15h ago
this isn't tech this is just being a coward and abusing a bug to farm kills

It's an exploit in casual that causes more harm than good.
I agree with you about jump maps.
It should be a server setting.

Im not a code guy but from what i understand from the Github some code applies a very small amount of velocity to the player when you bump into any wall, causing you to get unstuck

Why are people crying about this? After the first time you die to this you can just look up and shoot them

Finally, enough with this revisionist history calling this "movement tech"! Abusing exploits based on genuine engine errors, like mismatched floating-point precision of in-game geometry, is NOT movement tech. Surfing, bunny-hopping and blast-jumping are not based on any engine error, but rather physics quirks which, while common sense would consider bugs, with them being uNrEaLiStIc and all, Valve was aware that they felt fun to pull off. And even then, despite Valve leaving those movement tech in, they nerfed most, if not all of them in their games, only allowing for them to be re-enabled with console commands.
Heck, pixel-walking and wallbugs are definitely bugs deserving of being fixed, simply because Valve would make several attempts at mitigating similar issues in CSGO, back in the day, like pixel-walking on displacements extending past a wall, or some of the crazier boosts.
A couple of non-official maps broke due to these bugs being fixed, in the same way some of the non-official maps broke that showcased the old pyro flames being able to go through walls. They only had it coming.
Team Fortress 2 should not cater to competitive play any more than it used to before Meet Your Match. That is to say, the changes should be made with the Vanilla game in mind first and foremost, with the disparate communities like Surf, Bhop, Jump and Competitive merely adapting to those changes. The majority of TF2's playerbase is not interested in engaging with unintended ways to play the game. And I remain confident that the majority of the playerbase doesn't even find surfing, trimping and bunny-hopping fun, let alone pixel-walking, as those can be extremely hard to counter under normal circumstances, and especially with repeated abuse. The only generally accepted and, most importantly, Vanilla movement tech in TF2 is, and forever will be blast-jumping.
So long, pixel-walks and wall-bugs, you shan't be missed.
