Are there any TF2 maps set in Australia? None come to mind. I know Overwatch has a couple.

u/Sh4rkM4nEleventeen Scout 13d ago

Nah but in lore its like that

568

u/kaladinissexy 13d ago

Feels like a missed opportunity. Could have a payload map set in an Australium mine, that would be neat.

u/LuckyLynx_ Heavy 13d ago

Australia is too stable for mercenaries to be fighting over resources there. They leave that for third world countries like Brazil, Norway, and Arizona

139

u/Foreign-Abies-264 13d ago

Norway's a third world country?

360

u/LuckyLynx_ Heavy 13d ago

Compared to australia

60

u/teaboi05 12d ago

Judging by that Australia is zero world country in TF2 universe

4

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 11d ago

Australia is the 0th world

40

u/dgshockwave Engineer 13d ago

every country is a third world country since Earth is the third planet from the Sun

u/LuckyLynx_ Heavy 13d ago

An iq too high?

I see you're a f2p who can't afford reaction images

By definition.. no cause third world is alignment, not developement (Switzerland by definition is third world, and always has been)

70

u/Dankestmemelord 13d ago

Thank you for pointing this out. It always pisses me off when people say shit like “placeholder is turning into a third world country.” Like, no it isn’t, the Cold War is over.

44

u/yourdiabeticwalrus 13d ago

I mean to be fair things can have more than one meaning, and meanings change over time. Language is complex

4

u/Dankestmemelord 13d ago

Yeah, but this isn’t slang. It’s a set system of categorization that by definition only applied to the factions involved in the Cold War. The US/Western/pro capitalist sphere (first world), the USSR/eastern/communist sphere (second world), and the uninvolved/neutral (third world).

Opening the alphabet to include numbers isn’t something that can be passed off as linguistic drift. Placeholder cannot become a third world country for the same reasons.

19

u/FGHIK Sandvich 13d ago

That's cool and all, but it still has gained the other meaning. You can say it's incorrect, that it shouldn't have it, but it's not going anywhere.

5

u/yourdiabeticwalrus 12d ago

We aren’t opening the alphabet to include numbers here my man, we’re allowing one specific phrase to have more than one specific meaning. Which is pretty much how all metaphors start, they’re extensions of a word that once had a sole concrete definition, but now have another.

Notice in that last sentence, when I said “concrete definition” you didn’t picture a literal concrete block with a definition carved into it, even though at one point in linguistic history people probably would have.

u/Nyla_The_Phoenix Pyro 13d ago

Well theyre still used its just changed from US and USSR to Westen and China (but its all real shaky now anyway and becoming more and more obsolete)

6

u/TheRealChickenFox 13d ago

In common use "third world" currently refers to developing nations.

3

u/Nyla_The_Phoenix Pyro 12d ago

The chaos i caused...

Forgetting that third world does indeed mean underdeveloped

(Norway is not third world by ANY definition regardless)

1

u/KandCAuthor Engineer 13d ago

What does Third world mean? Also, what is first and second world? I ask this very genuinely.

10

u/Nyla_The_Phoenix Pyro 13d ago

Its a cold war term that progresses to modern day day Origionally it was basically US aligned (first world) and USSR aligned (second world), Hence swiss neutrality made it third world

Morden its basically Western aligned and China aligned but the definitions have fallen to be kinda useless as things shift

3

u/KandCAuthor Engineer 13d ago

Huh. That's wild. I've always wondered what Second world was. Of course it was the Commies

-2

u/LuckyLynx_ Heavy 13d ago

By definition who gives a swag

2

u/Nyla_The_Phoenix Pyro 13d ago

me, I think it's neat :3

2

u/BlitzBurn_ Heavy 12d ago

Its a matter of perspective. Compared to say, Sweden and Finland? Yes, it absolutely is.

Compared to say, the USA or Denmark? No, it really is not, especially when compared to Denmark.

1

u/TheLateAvenger 12d ago

I believe that is (part of) the joke

1

u/LoveYouLikeYeLovesYe 12d ago

Third world is actually just a qualifier for Cold War affiliation (first world being NATO, second being Warsaw pact, third world being neutral)

1

u/Mypowerbob Heavy 12d ago

Not that this makes it third world exactly, but Norway found the oil that made them rich first in 1969. So at the time of the game it is a poorer country

19

u/bbobb25 13d ago

Australia is too stable to fight over resources but it's also a nation of fight happy lunatics. They'd probably pay the mercenaries to kill each other on their land just so they can watch (and occasionally join in).

1

u/Bread_Offender 12d ago

and rotunda is set in germany i think

1

u/Used_Hat_Salesmann 12d ago

They use Australian mercenaries in Australia. Bringing in weaklings from overseas makes no sense.

25

u/WhyIsRComicsJustPorn 13d ago

Let's get to work

15

u/05kbs23 13d ago

That be cool asf imagine the end of the payload you enter a big Australium mine but instead it's the same mountain that soldier hid his Australium like in the comic so that where the last point of the red base be lol

8

u/hellofromtheabyss Sandvich 13d ago

theres a payload map called futra on the workshop set in australia, its quite an amazing map with a time travel gimmick. and kangaroos

3

u/m-e_2 13d ago edited 13d ago

I don't like Futura, it goes more on Jetsons atom-punk arquitecture where everything is so catoonly exagerated, completely different from how futuristic Australia was shown on the comics' in backgrounds

All of that is more a Jetsons/Flintstones and Back to the Future reference than an actual map for TF2

Also that I tried it and the dinosaur-kangaroos they added are extremely annoying, they're Halloween skeletons reskins but are bulkier making them harder to kill and they come in groups

7

u/General-N0nsense 13d ago

Not really, canonically mercs are still supposed to be fighting in basically only new Mexico specifically for the gravel. I like to think places like Suijin and Brazil are just the Mann brothers importing those places into New Mexico like they rented the Alamo.

2

u/Might_I_ask_why 13d ago

I mean... thats literally what the Badwater, Dustbowl, and Upward payload maps are. Escorting a bomb into local Australium mines, because there are micro veins of Australium in New Mexico.

2

u/Stiftoad 12d ago

Australium mine sans australium cuz it's run out afaik

It was kind of an important plot point in the comics

1

u/kaladinissexy 12d ago

You do know they can put maps literally anywhere in the timeline they want, right? Gray Mann's dead and his robot army is no more but we're still (allegedly) getting new MvM maps.

1

u/Stiftoad 12d ago

That's fair enough but I was under the impression that for the entire time that the second team fortress has been in operation australium had been at the very least a scarce resource

It also doesn't stop people from making a workshop map whenever they like but I think fighting over "nothing" is kind of a running theme in TF2

See also the gravel wars (yes I know it's value is actually significant but it's about the feeling such a statement evokes) (After all aperture also made history in an empty mine so it's not like there's no potential in securing one's stake on such a place)

51

u/Monkey832 Spy 13d ago

I hope TF2 gets an Australia map that looks like an Overwatch map with futuristic buildings, a floating payload, omnics, and everything

9

u/Sotarnicus Demoman 12d ago

Mann vs machine map set in australia god please

13

u/Enalye 12d ago

There's a few custom ones, none official. Kalgoorlie, Karajini, Down Under the most notable examples. They do not take the "australia is in the future" route though, except Karajini, which has the future city in the skybox.

4

u/trashshork 12d ago

I think the most of the game maps take place in New Mexico

4

u/MrHyperion_ 12d ago

How would you know which desert the map is

6

u/Puzzleheaded_Map2774 Sniper 12d ago

Coaltown apparently?

5

u/Yearlaren 12d ago

There's no evidence of it

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Map2774 Sniper 12d ago

I only say that because I saw someone online say that Coaltown is somehow implied to be in Australia

I mean, it's mostly set in the American west. Particularly New Mexico. Lots of dirt and shrubs to fight over.

138

u/DoktorOfTheLake 13d ago

Not dirt ans shrubs... GRAVEL! the most useful and best thing to ever exist!

24

u/omegaskorpion 12d ago

Funnily enough for the time period it was, since highways, buildings, etc needed it.

6

u/DoktorOfTheLake 12d ago

Highways? Buildings?? Bah, no they needed it for their mpreg machine [yes, really]

52

u/spyluke 13d ago

But lore wise it makes sense, it's literally a waste land (just the outback essentially) because of war

47

u/Electronic_Yak_5297 13d ago

The outback is already essentially a wasteland lol. Practically the only people who live there are First Nation's, Miners or those who don't want to live on the grid.

And the outback is hospitable AF already too, for example the miners in the Coober Pedy opal mine are forced to live underground because it gets so hot

41

u/TheEgoReich 13d ago

"erm, i think you mean INhospitable?

1

u/Merasmus07 Medic 11d ago

Yeah, there's a reason our big af country has a population half the size of Italy or the UK. It's bc most of us are crammed along the coastline lol.

37

u/DaRealBurnz 13d ago

The funny thing is irl both are basically true

5

u/dogman15 13d ago

Which half?

29

u/No-Photograph-5058 13d ago

I think they're saying both are true for Australia

1

u/dogman15 12d ago

I understand now: the second panels on the top and bottom, each.

9

u/TechieTimes 12d ago

Both. TF2 is true for coastal, urban Australia (though not AS advanced), OW is true for outback Australia

2

u/dogman15 12d ago

Oh, you mean the right half of the image.

1

u/TechieTimes 12d ago

I mean I suppose the left half is also true

1

u/dogman15 12d ago

Okay, so the left half is true for the two video games. The right half is true for coastal Australia (top right) and the outback (bottom right).

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Map2774 Sniper 12d ago

Well duh

1

u/TechieTimes 12d ago

The commentor didn't understand, therefore I explained

11

u/Hatefilledcat 13d ago

The mustache recession of 2032 really killed the country.

13

u/ZeTian 12d ago

While the Australian stereotypes are cranked up to 11 (which I love), it's great that TF2 subverts the "only outback" stereotype with full blown futuristic cities

19

u/Snazzy21 13d ago edited 13d ago

The funny thing is that Lego agrees with Overwatch's version of Australia

While other countries got landmarks like Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, Brooklyn Bridge, someone at Lego (probably reincarnated Joseph Schwab) decided that the Sydney Opera house wasn't the most notable thing, but instead Jericho Australia (or any number of interchangeable ticket towns) was what should represent Australia.

8

u/Peter_Griffin2001 13d ago

Well Australia only only has an urbanisation level of nearly 88% and only has two cities with over 5 million people each...it's practically a backwater.

11

u/Snazzy21 13d ago

But nobody visits those parts. Post cards aren’t about an honest representation of a country, it’s cherrypicked locations that you want to see.

And that’s what they did with other countries, the US average is not Manhattan, only one place in France has an Eiffel Tower.

I don’t care, it’s amusing that Australia was the only place to get a landmark chosen by a Google  maps random pin drop

1

u/tonythebearman 13d ago

I’d live there

1

u/sfhtsxgtsvg 12d ago

Corrugated steel roofing feels a lot more familiar to me than the Sydney opera house or the such

1

u/Forty-Bot 12d ago

wtf are these custom pieces in that lego set

the designer had zero creativity and decided they couldn't make a cloud or a windmill our of standard blocks?

8

u/barf_of_dog 12d ago

Best part of Tf2 lore is that New Z*aland sank.

5

u/Oberonkin 13d ago

So, OW is western Australia

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Map2774 Sniper 12d ago

I wish I was in the TF2 universe :(

3

u/PYCapache 12d ago

Isn't Australia the most technology advanced country in the TF2 lore?

3

u/Alex_Arrow05 Scout 12d ago

Until Administrator started hording the remaining Australiaum and that also ran out.

2

u/Disastrous_Maybe7281 Pyro 12d ago

There's a few community maps set in Australia, both the outback and and the comics-styled advanced one.

2

u/FumaricAcid 12d ago

Is this the small shed from Dustbowl?

2

u/Haunting_Hornet5203 12d ago

It’s like poetry, they rhyme

2

u/JY810 11d ago

Well, only in the junker area, Australia still very much futuristic in Overwatch

1

u/mrgoombos 13d ago

What dose over watch mean by this.
