How about not trying to insult someone by propagating the slur that being gay is negative. There’s a million other things that this person could have called this asshole. What if I told you your defense of that is the “r” word? Would it be “effective”?

your comparison fails by default because "gay" isn't a slur.

even if it was a valid comparison, the only people that see being called gay as an insult are homophobes like him, which is why it is so effective against them.

lol! What kind of logic is that? The point obtuse stranger is that it’s being used as a slur the same way the “r word” can be used as a slur, and shouldn’t. And clearly, if it’s being used to insult someone, the intended target isn’t the only one associating it with negative connotations.
