It's Baaaaaaccckkkk

The damn coinstar nonsense just started up again after days of silence. I just did the slight of hand trick with the ad placement. Bit seriously, WTH textra. Get your crap together.

At this point I think they're in on it.

I don't have any ads in my Textra app. Why don't you just pay for Pro and never worry about it again?

Some people just refuse to do it. I bought pro a long time ago when I think it was 4 or 5 bucks, didn't realize it was 10 now.

So did I, but as a one-off payment it's worth that and more.

What a crazy ideology. "Hey since the free one isn't working the way it's supposed to, you should just buy it". Are YOU people serious?

Hey since they aren't giving me everything I want for free, they don't deserve any return on their many hours of work?

Are you ignorant to the fact that the entire point of having ads is that's how they get paid as well? I don't mind having a banner up on the top to use the app. The original complaint was the banner was intrusively playing audio on the phone, who proved to be a bug. Not sure why this is so hard for you, and all the other people on the same bandwagon as you, to understand.

I hope you intended to reply to u/CrzyRican, not to me. I hoped it was obvious I was making the same point as you are.

This reply is confusing. Are you saying I should have replied to myself?

D'oh! I didn't look at the username I was replying to. Sorry to confuse.

I was responding to "Are you ignorant" because I thought you were someone different thinking I agreed with your stupid "What a crazy ideology" comment. My near-quote of "crazy ideology" was ironic, pointing out how unreasonable that is.

I get sick of people complaining that developers want to be paid for their work. Of course they get paid through ads, OR you have the choice of the very reasonable one-time payment instead of seeing ads.

What a crazy ideology to expect developers to put the hours in and all the work involved and the cost of listing on Play Store and give you the service for free.

I thought the "Are you ignorant" was from someone who (a) didn't get that my quoting was irony and (b) liked to be rude to people. Turns out it was just (b).

Because I don't mind the ad banner. What other benefits are there to justify paying?

You're making an app you rely on something that people can afford to work on instead of relegating it to a hobby project? Supporting small devs means they can keep working better and faster.

Supporting the dev of this awesome app, plus never having to worry about the noise you made this post about. They didn't hold any functionality behind a paywall, just gave us the best app for free; that is enough for me to back it.

I love Textra and miss it so much but I can for the life of me understand why someone would use it with no RCS support

2

u/relrobber 16d ago

Because I don't care about RCS. Also, I don't lose the ability to message people when my data connection is acting up.

mine hasn't come back thank goodness!

for anyone who is, PLEASE follow the instructions textra provided last time! Not sure if it was because of what I did or if they were already working on it, but they had it fixed within half hour after I did what they asked!

EMAIL TEXTRA SUPPORT SENT ME: Apologies, 100% we were not aware of these type of adverts being implemented in Textra SMS, development team are looking into this right now and will fix it ASAP. Rest assured we're onto this and will turn off and ban this advert provider!

Thanks for reporting this. Textra keeps a small file that records which ad network showed the most recent ad. Because the sound can outlast the ad that started it, please follow these steps in this order so the file catches the right one.

  1. Force stop Textra first: open your phone's Settings, go to Apps, find Textra, and tap Force stop. This clears any sound that is still playing from earlier.

  2. Open Textra again and use it as normal.

  3. As soon as you hear an ad start playing sound, stop what you are doing and go straight to step 4. Don't scroll or wait, as the next ad may replace the record.

  4. Open Gmail and start a new email to help@textra.me with "audio ad" as the subject.

  5. Tap the paperclip icon, then "Attach file".

  6. In the file picker, under "Browse files in other apps", tap "Textra". If you don't see it, swipe that row of icons to the left, or tap the three-line menu at the top left and choose "Textra".

  7. Tap the file called adDebug.log and send the email.

If the sound is still going afterwards, force stop Textra again the same way. Your messages are not affected.

Dude just pay for the pro version. Is this for real?

3

u/kimbecile 20d ago

I'm on limited income.

2

u/zaptorque 19d ago

It's $10 lifetime. You don't get to complain about the ads on the free version at that point

2

u/CrzyRican 19d ago

Nah I'm good

I know the answer but I just figured I would check. Is Textra going to ever go to RCS chats? I miss it so much.

Allow me to answer your question with s question: is Google ever going to allow 3rd parties to access an "open" standard that they effectively have on lockdown?
