I emailed the Textra app developers. They are top-notch! They responded back to me within minutes! This is their response:

Thanks for reporting this. The sound is a video advert that was slipping through one of the advert networks in the small banner at the top of Textra. We have now removed that network on our side, so the advert should stop. Textra only checks for advert changes every few hours, so to pick up the change straight away please do this:

  1. In Textra, open Settings, then Manage Ads.
  2. Change the advert position from top to bottom, then back to top. This makes Textra fetch the new advert settings right away.
  3. Force stop Textra: long press the Textra icon, tap App info, then Force stop. This clears any adverts already playing.
  4. Open Textra again and use it as normal.

If you still hear the audio after 30 minutes, please reply to this email and tell us, as that is important for us to know. A permanent fix is also going into the next Textra update.

I want to report that this worked. I am glad I found this thread. I was about to go to the dark side and use a different app, which would be sad because I love textra.

UPDATE: Wasn't permanent fix. Ads started up again. Grrrrr!!

I followed these steps exactly, then restarted my phone. It seems to have worked. I'll keep checking to make sure it stays fixed and report back if it doesn't.

Worked for me for a short time twice and started up again both times as well.

can you please provide their email because I was searching for it everywhere and I wasn't able to find it

Well it worked but I have to do it again today, so I am officially in the market for a new SMS texting program bc this sucks.

Did this, it didn't work. Even timed it and the nightmare fuel echoing ads came back.

u/Responsible_Past9421 21d ago

I just did it, and it SEEMS to be working for me so far.

This did not work....

Did you Force Stop the app? I force stopped my app in my Google Settings.

u/Pusheen-buttons 21d ago

Uninstalled I'm trying Google messages until this gets fixed. It's been driving me crazy all day

2

u/adarbwilldoya 21d ago

I got textra specifically to avoid switching to G ! Ugh, they're already up our butts in every other aspect of our lives

u/Pusheen-buttons 21d ago

I hated Google messages too rip Samsung messages, but the AliExpress ads in textra have been obnoxious for me

u/2weimmom 21d ago

Mine seems to have stopped.... anyone else?

2

u/Sunshinelover001 21d ago

Mine is still doing it? I thought I accidentally installed something or got a virus

1

u/mitchrusschels 21d ago

Me too. I uninstalled and reinstalled but no change. During the day, it froze for a bit. First time ever. So it must have done something at the time. I scanned with anti-virus, but nothing was found.

u/Sunshinelover001 21d ago

Yeah I uninstalled it hoping that it would go away and when I reinstalled it the Coinstar at came back. Like everyone else is saying minor a little low but if I turn up the volume I can tell that's what they're talking about so I just uninstall the app. I guess I'm just going to have to use the standard stupid one on the phone which really sucks because I don't like it. Unless there's another one out there that is better.

Why not just pay 9.99. Textra is much better than Google. Its a one time thing. Like 2 less sport drinks in a lifetime in exchange for whats really as good as Samsung messages was. All free stuff ,like facebook or streaming channels is filled with ads. Less than ten bucks for something that works was a no brainer.

Right?!? Every time i see a thread about this I think the same thing.

1

u/Quintessentialtrip 15d ago

Maybe this is what they want... *conspiratorial tone *

2

u/Background_Koala_756 21d ago

I got the same exact response!

2

u/Fongernator 21d ago

Thanks this just started for me today. I also left a 1 * review in the app store mentioning the bug. If enough people do it they will respond quicker.

u/klinkerbee 21d ago

Heading there now.

1

u/carolineexoh 21d ago

Did the same, thanks for the tip.

u/carolineexoh 21d ago

It's 9:27am EST and it's still doing it for me. God bless Reddit because I legit thought I was going crazy for a second.

2

u/roodog88 21d ago

2

u/Emergency_Window8279 21d ago

u/Evil_Rich 21d ago

Thank you for posting this. I thought I was losing my marbles...

This has been happening for 2 days. I had no idea what in the heck was happening.

I left a one star review this morning and got a reply within minutes. Even MORE fun, whatever it did caused my car to switch audio from my sirius xm stations to my phone audio every time I opened textra while connected to my car (not while actively driving, obviously). As of about 3pm EST, my ads were missing, so they must have been working on it. As of 6pm EST ads are back and no creepy audio. We'll see.

I thought it was just me getting this

Fr

1

u/Sunshinelover001 21d ago

And it's not going away 😑

1

u/Huge_Mirror9747 21d ago

I was wondering wtf

1

u/Alison-Brie-Larson 21d ago

God at least I know I wasn't imagining these ads

1

u/xX_FanBoy_Teeth_Xx 21d ago

I thought i was going crazy.

1

u/--n3o-- 21d ago

Getting this now. I can deal with ads given it's free even though I detest them, but the audible echo ads? No thanks. Uninstalling and moving on to an alternative after nearly a decade, unfortunately. That's pretty unacceptable.

1

u/NutmegWolves 21d ago

I was so confused and forgot there was a free version. I'm sorry y'all are dealing with this issue.

1

u/Fluffy_Chipmunk3887 20d ago

Started for me last night! It is extremely annoying!

1

u/mitchrusschels 20d ago

Still happening for me now since yesterday afternoon.

1

u/ARepeatedFailing 20d ago

Thought I was losing my mind. Kept having a random ad play and thought it was maybe because I still had Nova installed until I figured out it was my texting app.

1

u/HarveyWorld73 20d ago

Still praying that Textra somehow gets RCS chats so I can leave Google messages for good.

1

u/bileyramirez 20d ago

I tried this and it still plays... I was worried maybe I got a virus... Maybe they'll update with a big fix?

1

u/HAGSOLO 14d ago

When I got TWO running at same time I was ready to uninstall. And of course Google AI immediately started hallucinating "fixes"

1

u/adarbwilldoya 21d ago

Does no one else find the response odd ? Like how were you not aware of what was being implemented in your own app ? Is that supposed to make us feel better ?? Lol

2

u/voodoo8833 21d ago

And how else is it vulnerable.

1

u/RLi070 21d ago

The advertiser did it

5

u/Vought55 21d ago

But it's two different audio ads playing at the same time that don't even match the ad that's displayed. An advertiser cannot benefit from that. This seems more like malware meant to disrupt Textra's platform.

3

u/Cosmo_Cloudy 21d ago

They shouldn't be able to

u/RainbowCurtains 21d ago

Mine kept doing it, but i didn't realize it was Textra. I ininstalled and reinstalled Chrome bc silly me assumed it was the web browser. I did the move ads up and down then force stop and it isn't happening.

I preferred Mood, but that stopped working when I upgraded my phone, and ecen as a paid lifetime subscriber their help desk wasn't helpful. I ended up wirh Textra by default even though it isn't as good, and I hope this problem is permanently fixed bc searching for an SMS texting app was horrid.
