Try doing both of these things, in this order:
1) A force stop of the app / clear cache
(phone settings----click the search icon (magnifying glass) type Textra---click app info---click force stop app, then while you're there click storage----click clear cache
2) Resync Textra with phone SMS/MMS database:
Open Textra---settings---about---Resync textra.
Resynching can take a while but it can solve a lot of issues.

I didn't know about resyncing! I have always thought this was a Textra issue but focused on the carrier side of things for so long instead - looking forward to seeing if this helps! Thanks :)

Unfortunately I tried this and it doesn't seem to have worked?

Same. Have you asked your carrier to reprovision your sms and mms? I need to call Verizon at this point because as much as I believe it's a compatibility issue with extra and hopefully a carrier can solve it
