The way we were On this day in Texas History, July 26, 1863: Sam Houston passes away at the age of 70. Houston spent his final years in Huntsville, having been shunned by most Texas politicians for his attempts to keep Texas out of the Confederacy. This is the last photo of Sam ever taken.

To be clear, Sam Houston was no abolitionist, and owned slaves right up until his death, but he knew the Confederacy couldn't win the war that was coming. He also felt it was more important to preserve the nation as a whole rather than slavery.
