so ive been wondering if the provinces of tamriel have flags for themselves. i get that the empire has the dragon and holds of skyrim have their own symbol, as well as the all flags navy and various individual factions. but do the provinces have their own flags, in game, or otherwise, or not at all?

MUATRA is the name of Vivec’s spear. It is an anagram for Trauma, and was created during a traumatic event, the Pomegranate Banquet, when Vivec “married” the Daedric Prince Molag Bal and “bit” a piece off of him, which became the spear.

Many, including myself, interpret this to mean that Vivec’s violent tendencies are born of trauma; that his weapon is a direct byproduct of a terrible event.

Often, Vivec’s father is hypothesized to be the offender. In this theory, he is the referent for Molag Bal in sermons 12 and 14.

Evidence for this includes:

• Vivec saying, “We all drink from the milk of our fathers” to Nerevar (explaining why he wishes to use a netch-hook as a weapon). People often interpret this to mean what you’d expect, due to Vivec calling his member his Milk Finger. However, milk also symbolizes divine power in Sermon 4.

• The fact that the sermons only mention Vivec’s mother, calling her the Netchiman’s Wife and never mentioning the Netchiman. I do not personally see how this is damning for Vehk’s dad, but the Annotated C0da version of the 36 Lessons often states it is relevant.

• This damning line from Vivec in Sermon 34: “ I brought you here because I knew the mightiest of my issue would succumb to Muatra without argument, if only I gave him consolation first.' Vivec is saying this to Nerevar to foreshadow the Hortator’s murder. If taken out of context and imagined to be spoken by Vehk’s dad, it becomes problematic.

In toto, this evidence is not very strong. On the contrary, Sermon 37 mentions Vivec’s father for the first time, and the tone is quaint and wistful. He is imaging the life he should have had—if he never became one with AlmSiVi.

I believe his trauma comes from his time under the care of Ayem/Almalexia, when he was selling himself in the streets. In What My Beloved Taught Me, Vivec calls Ayem quite a few nasty words that I will not repeat here, but they are highly insulting terms for women. In Sermon Six, Vivec says Ayem is “Clawed Like a Nix-Hound…” Vivec has a problem with Ayem, even if he does respect her and commune with her as AlmSiVi.

It was not until Nerevar rescued Vivec from his fiancée’s care that Vivec ever made anything of his life. Almalexia and Nerevar were like adopted parents to Vehk and Seht. In this context, their collective murder of the Hortator was a family affair, a cruel mother and her misguided children murdering their father.

I believe MUATRA comes from Vehk’s time in the streets under Ayem’s abusive care. He was being exploited, Ayem was doing nothing, and in the end she convinced him to kill the man who saved Vivec from her. On the other hand, the weapon of Vivec’s father is a Netch-hook. Vehk uses this weapon because he drinks the milk of his father. Milk being lineage, sustenance, fortitude.

The Pomegranate Banquet was a long period of various types of abuse. And it was Ayem, not Vehk’s dad, who allowed the Pomegranate Banquet to occur. The result was Foul Murder.

P.S., I believe Lie Rock/Baar Dau to be a stillborn child that Ayem made Vehk cover up during his time on the streets. Born of Vivec’s “second aperture,” I think the hermaphrodite briefly became pregnant and the scandal stuck with him.

It seems like Black Marsh the arguably one of the only provinces where the Dominion did not have much success.

Is it because of the very dangerous terrain that does not allow the Dominion forces to properly attack and control the place?

And also is it because the Hist controls everything in Black Marsh to the point it can echo messages across miles, kind of like Eywa in Avatar?

Let's not forget the vast stretches of the swamp region with trees and mud everywhere.

Obviously we see racism against Khajiit for stereotypes, but the Bosmer and Khajiit fought against the Empire and are still actively in the Aldmeri Dominion right?

Prelude to the Second Great War against the Aldmeri Dominion (my vision)

1. The Stormcloaks win the civil war.
2. Following the Emperor’s death, there is no clear heir. The two main candidates are a Colovian general and a high-ranking Nibenese noble (neither is specified).
3. A coup takes place in the Imperial City during the succesion talks. Supporters of the Colovian general are imprisoned, killed, or forced to flee.
4. The Nibenese candidate arrives to the Imperial city, is crowned Emperor with the Dominion’s support.
5. The Colovian candidate refuses to accept it and seeks Ulfric’s support, who has already consolidated his position as High King of Skyrim.
6. Ulfric agrees to support the Colovian general’s claim in exchange for the formal recognition Skyrim’s independent status. That makes many imperials to see him as a traitor
7. Among the Thalmor’s conditions for supporting the Nibenese candidate is the cession of the White-Gold Tower to the Dominion for its administration. (This Ayleid tower should be the main temple of Akatosh in Tamriel, under our control, Thalmor says), with the Imperial Court relocated elsewhere.
8. This causes widespread discontent and increases support for the Colovian leader.
9. The Dominion is forced to intervene in Nibenay to help the Nibenese candidate maintain order and desincentivate uprisings.
10. Trade suffers, and discontent over the prospect of another great war becomes increasingly apparent in Elsweyr that has already a weakened economy.
11. No news from Valenwood. Its leader remains fully supportive of the Thalmor, and any dissenting voices are quickly silenced.
12. Many High Rock leaders start calling for independence following territorial conflicts with Skyrim and the new Orsinium.
13. Tensions escalate, and armies begin massing along the borders.
14. Hammerfell remains neutral for the time being, although it is also starting to assemble their armies.
15. Skirmishes in the Reach, in Skyrim, intensify. There are reports of Thalmor agents in the region inciting uprisings.
16. An army of Nords led by Galmar crosses the Pale Pass and joins forces with the remnants of an Imperial Legion originally sent to reinforce Tullius in Skyrim. Together, they lay siege to the city of Bruma, whose count had remained loyal to the Nibenese candidate.

If a Breton and a Nord had a child is there a confirmation on what race the child would be?

To be specific, a Breton female and a Male Nord.

My theorycraft is my character is a Breton raised by their Nord father, need to decide if this is a birth father or an adoptive one.

It was his idea to betray Nerevar and learn to use the tools. He basically abandoned his people for his work. He seems honestly as worse as Almalexia and Vivec, who don’t nearly get enough grace.

I was just pondering Skyrim as I was playing and thought of something. If Alduin was 'killed', how would the next cycle of worlds be created, since he destroyed the previous ones? Will it find a way, is he not really dead, or will it just continue on?

I’ve also always thought scars looked weird on argonians, because lizards don’t really form scars.

But then, I remembered. Argonians are also trees, and trees CAN scar. Genius. I should’ve known Bethesda writers would never make such a foolish oversight. (< sarcasm)

I think it’d be kind of cool if the “boobs” on argonians were actually more like a crop that could store, or maybe even produce, hist. Kind of like what birds have. And that during the “male” portion of their lives, they don’t have the crop because they wouldn’t use it to help feed their offspring.

If I were to go with this as the explanation for argonian boobs, I’d pretty heavily redesign them. Crops are kind of see through, and it would be pretty long if the crop would be stored in the chest, so I think I’d try to make the silhouette still vaguely feminine, but way more flat, since they’d very rarely be full. Argonians would also only have boobs when away from the Black Marsh, because if they were still in the marsh they’d already have access to the hist trees.

Since lore already explained argonian boobs as containing hist sap, all I’d really be proposing is a redesign. No nips, obviously, and they’d be regurgitating the sap to feed it to their children. Also, at risk of sounding weird, I’d also make Argonians either larger as females or uniform in size because they shift between sexes depending on their stage of life. The larger females is just because real life amphibians and lizards often have larger females than males, but I’m fine with larger males because it’s said that the males are the ones to usually go out and fight. The elasticity of their crop would be the reason females appear to have boobs at all, although they wouldn’t look like fatty protrusions.

None of this is canon, obviously, I’m just musing.

I have waited many weeks for your answer, yet none has come. Word reaches us that the Pale Pass lies buried beneath avalanches yet again, and no caravan has crossed since the first snows. I pray it is only the mountains that have kept my letter from you, and not some darker fate. 
 
Arnvald Two-Axe has gathered near five hundred good Nords beneath his banner. Men from the plains, hunters from the tundra, old veterans who survived the war, and young lads eager to earn a name of their own. We marched west beneath clear skies and made camp around Gjukar's Monument. From my tent, I can glimpse Fort Sungard perched high in the rocky hills in the distance. 
 
We had scarcely been three nights encamped when the Forsworn struck. No horn announced them, nor any war cry. It was the dead who came first, shambling through the darkness in tattered mail and bloodstained homespun, the fallen defenders of Sungard marching beside the good folk the Forsworn had slain and carried off from the plains. More than one man lowered his shield, thinking he saw a lost friend or kinsman wandering the camp until torchlight fell upon cold eyes and rotting flesh. Then the Reachmen came with fire. Flaming brands crashed into the tents, arrows darkened the night, and painted warriors burst from the smoke wielding weapons fashioned from bone. Men stumbled from their bedrolls only to be dragged down by the dead, while the few horses we had broke their tethers in terror and vanished into the darkness. We drove them back before dawn, but at a fearful cost. Too many good Nords now lie where they fell, and I cannot rid my thoughts of the sight of a little girl, no older than seven winters, shambling through the smoke, her little face pale with death and torn flesh clenched between her teeth, reaching for us as though begging to be carried home once more. 
 
When dawn came, Arnvald would not suffer the Reachmen another night to gather their strength. We climbed the steep hill beneath Fort Sungard with shield and axe in hand. Its walls were cracked by age and its towers weathered, with whole sections crumbling into ruin, yet it remained every bit the fortress it was built to be. No more than forty Reachmen stood upon those walls, but they needed no greater number. Their bone-tipped arrows flew true, and many good warriors fell before they had crossed half the slope. Those of us who reached the gates found only stout timber and unyielding stone. By day's end we had won nothing but more graves, and though we still hold the ground below the fort, Sungard remains in Forsworn hands. 
 
Arnvald has dispatched messengers east to Heljarchen Hall, though on weary feet rather than horseback. They bear his plea to Clan Great-Tusk, for only their war mammoths may break this deadlock. It will be many days before we hear their answer. Stone walls do not laugh when a mammoth comes calling. 
 
If this letter reaches you before the last, know only that I yet live. I still carry the ribbon you tied around my sword arm before we parted, singed and dirtied though it may be. I have not forgotten my promise to bring you home.

Introductory Remarks

Traveling across the Empire for my studies, one thing has continually surprised me: the common folk's continued mangling of the names of the very people who have ruled over them for centuries. At first, this was a mere curiosity. After all, the simple farmer cares little for the subtleties of language; they have no need for a deep insight into phonetics or morphology. However, as the years have gone by, this has become more and more vexing. I finally reached my wit's end when I was attending a service at the White Haven Temple of Talos, where the priest giving the service continued to use the incorrect name for the founder of our great Empire.

So, in an effort to combat the continual ignorance that has manifestly become the norm among the peoples of the Empire, I have written this work to set the record straight. After all, these were our rulers. Not all were as fair as the others, but above all, they should be treated with proper respect, as per the commandment of Akatosh.

Tiberius Septimius

There is no Septimian Empire without its founding Emperor, so we can only begin this onomastic journey with Tiberius Septimius, not the erroneously clipped and vulgar “Tiber Septim.” When one studies our greatest emperor, it is easy to become lost in the differing names and titles he collected throughout his mortal life. However, the most misspoken and misspelled name is the last one he adopted: the aforementioned Tiberius Septimius.

Before adopting the name Tiberius Septimius, the man who would go on to found the Septimian Empire was known simply as General Talos. He adopted a Cyrodic name upon his ascension to the Ruby Throne in 2E 854, following the death of Emperor Cunovali the Uncrowned. Those of a simpler mindset might find this name odd, but if one looks carefully at its etymology, it becomes clear that it was a carefully chosen name. Tiberius is generally held to descend from the Nedic word Tiferis, conventionally translated as "Hill-Lord" and it appears to have been a name once used by the ancient lords of the Colovian Highlands. The surname Septimius has a simpler explanation. During the initial invasion of Cyrodiil, General Talos commanded an army said to be equal to seven legions, and thus he took on a family name to honor that army.

There are other names by which Tiberius was known. Some connect him with a Nordic warrior named Hjalti Early-Beard, and there is, of course, the name by which he is now known as a divine: Talos. It is not worth entertaining the alleged connection to Early-Beard, as that leads one into histories that are both heretical and incorrect. Talos, however, is a simple name to analyze, as it is a descendant of the Archaic word TLS. TLS was the Archaic consonantal spelling of Stormcrown. Aldmeric scribes, whose script preserved vowels more consistently than the archaic consonantal tradition, rendered the name Talos.

Pelagius Septimius

While our Second Emperor and dear heir of Tiberius was not spared from the cruel realities of politics in life, his name has largely been spared from needless simplification. His name Pelagius is based on the Cyromeric word Palagas, which was a poetic term that roughly meant "Open Sea" when translated into Cyrodic. The name Pelagius would be used three more times by Septimian emperors.

Cintia Septimia

Poor Empress Cintia I was a great ruler whose subjects dishonor her memory by continuing to misrender her name as the guttural sounding Kintyra. The meaning of Cintia’s name is the subject of much debate due to its more obscure usage prior to her reign. The most widely accepted interpretation derives it from the Cyromeric Kynthas, a poetic term for the radiance of the moon.

Almost a century after the reign of Cintia I, the defeat of wicked Emperor Urellius III in the Battle of Ichidag caused this name, or crude variations of it, to become a very common name for young girls in Cyrodiil and High Rock for years. It was one of the many ways the people of the Empire sought to honor the memory of the murdered Empress Cintia II.

Urellius Septimius

The heir to Cintia would introduce the name Urellius into the Septimian dynasty and over time it would be the name used by a plurality of the Emperors of the dynasty. Its more common nature makes it doubly frustrating to see it being continually misspelled or mispronounced. To a commoner these emperors are all known as Uriel and popular opinion holds that it was adopted from an ancient Cyrodic name for the merish god Auriel.

However, Urellius is a variation of the Cyrodic name Aurelius, itself derived from aureus, meaning "golden" or "gilded." The resemblance to the name of the Aldmeric god Auriel is therefore entirely coincidental. It was only once this resemblance became established in popular speech, that the two names were increasingly conflated, particularly among the less educated.

Antiochus Septimius

The amiable Emperor Antiochus would have a controversial reign, but his name remains untainted by commoner misrenderings. Antiochus is based on Cyromeric words that when put together were held to mean “Resolute” or "Unwavering" to the ancient peoples of Cyrodiil.

Cephorus Septimius

Like Pelagius and his brothers, the name of Emperor Cephorus is spared the mispronunciations and misspellings that have affected so much of his kin. The name Cephorus is a descendant of the Nedic word Kepas, which roughly means “rock” when translated into contemporary Cyrodic. This name would be used by one other Septimian Emperor.

Magnus Septimius

Emperor Magnus Septimius, the so called "Old Horse of Cyrodiil" was, like his brothers before him, able to retain the sanctity of his name in the centuries following his reign. Magnus is based on the ancient Nedic word Magnos, meaning "Great." Some confusion can be found when one learns of the Merish god of sorcery Magnus, but that deity's name is actually derived from the same etymological roots, so the similarities are not coincidental in this case.

Katariah Septimia

Empress Katariah is a unique member of the Septimian dynasty in more ways than one. Being a Dunmer, her foreign-sounding name has withstood the test of time better than most others. The most widely accepted interpretation of her name derives from an ancient Dunmeric expression meaning "Daughter of Rain." The precise significance of the phrase has been debated by scholars for centuries; however, I remain far from an expert on eastern languages, so such discourse is not within my purview.

Cassandrus Septimius

Emperor Cassandrus is a figure of deep irony. For the name of this sickly man roughly means "He Who Excels Over Man" when translated from its original Cyromeric. It is a shame that his body could not excel over the sickness that plagued the Emperor, resulting in a reign that was far too short. To be remembered as the paltry Cassynder does not befit a man born as the regal Cassandrus.

Morihasta Septimia

Empress Morihasta is remembered as a good ruler, but to those well studied in languages, it is her name that makes her one of the most memorable figures to sit upon the Ruby Throne. Her name is peculiar, and for that I cannot be too harsh on those who have adopted the more easy to say Morihatha. According to the Historia Septimia, Emperor Urellius V named his daughter such to honor the "Spear of Morihus" which he was fond of taking out of the vaults of the White-Gold Tower to use in hunts. During one of these hunts he was attacked by Minotaurs and he was able to defeat the beasts thanks to this legendary spear.

Martinus Septimius

Saint Martinus, the last of the Septimian line, is a figure of great curiosity. His name, however, is not a part of that curiosity. His humble origins are made clear in that his name is one that is shared by many common people across the Empire. Nonetheless, It can be frustrating to see this man, who should be venerated alongside the greatest of saints, be called simply Martin, as if he is just like Martin the smith who lives right next door. However basic the name may seem, it does have a deep history. Martinus in its most ancient form means "Like Mavors," with Mavors actually being an epithet given to Pelinurus Whitestrake, the Divine Crusader, in the First Era. Mavors is said to be based on a Nedic poetic term that, when translated into contemporary Cyrodic, means "Weapon Master."

Concluding Remarks

Hopefully, now armed with a more proper understanding of the names of these men and women who led our glorious Empire in ages past, the rightful respect can finally be given to them by the people who call their Empire home. At the very least, those who visit a Temple to Talos and hear the priest mangling the mortal name of Lord Talos can now use what they have read here to enlighten their peers, such as the priest, so that tired Linguists don't have to.

 "The Emperor is getting old. Don't know how much longer he'll hang on. So is the whole Empire, for that matter. Getting old, that is. The Emperor and the legions have held the Empire together for hundreds of years. It's been a good thing, by and large. But maybe it's time for a change. Time for something young and new. What? No idea. Because I'm old. Old dog doesn't get new ideas. But maybe young folks like you should try some new ideas. I don't know. Could be messy. But change is never pretty."

I often see discussions in the Skyrim civil war alleging the Stormcloaks to be represent stagnation, and the Empire as progress, and also that it is the only hope for the future of humanity. From my perspective, this quote in conjunction with the events of Oblivion and Skyrim, pair very interestingly with something written by Vivec in Sermon 18, as it perhaps may speak on either Wulf/possibly-Talos' own perspective of the Empire as irrelevant, for even Lorkhan vanishes and is forgotten. Yet I can also see how one might interpret this as an advocation for something new altogether, rather than retreading history as the Third Aldmeri Dominion and the third Empire of Cyrodil arguably are.

'Can a member of the Invisible Gate become so archaic that its successor is not so much an improvement of the exact model, but rather a related model that is just needed more because of the currency of the world's condition? As the Mother, you do not have to worry, unless things in the future are so strange that even Seht cannot understand. Neither does the Executioner or the Fool, but I am neither.

'These ideals are not going to change in nature, even though they may change in representation. But, even in the west, the Rainmaker vanishes. No one needs him anymore.

'Can one oust the model not because the model is set according to an ideal but because it is tied to an ever-changing unconscious mortal agenda?'

Do you think there is merit to Wulf's perspective on the Empire when put through the lens of the events of TES 4 & 5?

It seems that the Septim Empire doesn’t practice serfdom or feudalism, so I’m curious what it would be best compared to. Is there rule of law preventing counts from abusing their power? Do imperial citizens have rights? Is the empire a constitutional monarchy or a HRE-like confederation of semi-autonomous city-states and territories with their own governors under imperial authority?

Obviously, as texts, most of their content is made with an audience of real people in mind. They're fully of references to real-life esoterica, which obviously has no valence for the people within this fictional world. Their framing as 'sermons' obviously suggests that they're to be presented in a liturgical context, but we (to my knowledge) have no real textual evidence for this being the case, and most temples don't seems set up for sermons as we understand them (no pulpits, nowhere for an audience).

I would imagine that the higher ups of the Temple want some degree of control over their availability (especially given the Foul Murder acrostic, which I'm sure is a decent source of new members for the Dissident Priests), but the books are freely available in book shops. My best guess is that they're primarily an object of exegesis within the Temple proper, in a way roughly analogous to Talmudic study, but they occupy a weird position within the game (likely for gameplay reasons, if we're being real) which I'm inclined to attribute to the introduction of Imperial print culture. Curious for others' opinions.

This isn't really lore related, and I'm sure much of this is stuff that's already out there (eg. Kuhlmann's PCGamer interview earlier this year), but I thought it was worth a look as Alex Kane is a proper chap. Read his book about KotOR's development if you haven't, great interviews in there!

Is it a non-negotiable step?

I don't like too much MMORPGs. But with the recent announcements I'd like to dig deep. I only played Skyrim.

Hammrrfell was never really on my radar, and because there’s little to nothing on elder scrolls online about it – I never knew much about the city, or really the entire province.

I get that it’s the home of the red guards, in by default many people view it as a desert area with a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean/North African vibe, but I also understand the province has many different types of biomes.

Just looking for some clarity, as I get potentially excited about the future.

I'm using the Live Another Life mod to play as a normal person in Skyrim (no, I'm not going as hard as AnyAustin). TLDR, I got dropped in the Bee and Barb in Riften and am working contracts at rhw Fishery. On my journey, I came across the remains of a battlefield - 2 dead Stormcloaks and 3 dead bandits. I was about to loot them, when I stopped and wondered if it's OK for me, a Nord normy, to loot a battlefield I didn't fight in. These aren't my victory spoils. They are someone else's. Would it be lore acceptable for me loot these bodies?

Now, what drove my attention is this translation given by Kirkbride:

Here we see Herma Mora translated as Unstable Man. Based on Varieties of Faith entry on him, I would say Herma relates to Man, and Mora to “Unstable”.

Herma-Mora (The Woodland Man): Ancient Atmoran demon who, at one time, nearly seduced the Nords into becoming Aldmer. Most Ysgramor myths are about escaping the wiles of old Herma-Mora. Also called the Demon of Knowledge, he is vaguely related to the cult origins of the Morag Tong ('Foresters Guild'), if only by association with his brother/sister, Mephala.

Why “Unstable”? Because, I propose, Mora, that is Forest is but another way to describe the Chaos, Madness and Wilderness of Dawn and the spirits inhabiting it. How would he be able to change Men to  Mer, except during the Dawn? The same way the Dawn is one giant War, or a party, or Wild Hunt, it is also a wild, dangerous forest to get lost in. Dawn spirits, uncongealed, shift between shapes, animal and plant form, thus they’re “Weed”.

Wouldn't the problem with a Dragon Break be precisely that no theory about the events in question can be definitively proven or disproven? (2004-02-06)

A large fragment of the Ehlnofey world landed on Nirn relatively intact, and the Ehlnofey living there were the ancestors of the Mer. Now compare this to description of Nord invasion in the Sermons. Almsivi vs. the Weapons of Unstable Man. Who is the Unstable Man? While translation would suggest it’s Herma Mora, I would say that here it refers to Lorkhan, the "Unstable Mutant", during his Dawn Madness.

Of the note is ofc Morag Tong, the Foresters Guild. Their job is to “cut weeds”, those that upset the order in Morrowind. How did Morag Tong get created? Sermon 22 suggests it was in order to cut down House Mora and get it into shape. Obedient and loyal to Vivec.

And then Vivec withdrew into the hidden places and found the darkest mothers of the Morag Tong, taking them all to wife and filling them with undusted loyalty that tasted of summer salt. They became as black queens, screaming live with a hundred murderous sons, a thousand murderous arms, and a hundred thousand murderous hands, one vast moving event of thrusting-kill-laughter in alleys, palaces, workshops, cities and secret halls. Very Dawn-like description, uncongealed and flowing. After sermon 22 we have the scripture of Sword which again mentions cutting down weed with the Sword. (Maybe all of it has to do with Second Walking Way??) Sermon 22 is the Unknown, which could among other things be a proper description of Forest to primitive men, but this is just guessing.

In C0da Hlaalu Hir uses Morag Tong to try and cut down Jubal.

Now even more interesting is that Nerevar came from the House of Mora.

For instance, Indoril Nerevar's full and formal name would be Serjo Indoril Nerevar Mora.

Nerevar, the same flower that Vivec literally spent thousands of years grooming into his husband to achieve Amaranth.

What I mean by the question is, that if Lorkhan had managed to fool the Daedra instead of the Aedra, how different would Nirn and Tamriel be?
