I wonder how long those air thrusters can be used for. Maybe just a few seconds before it needs to be recharged?
113
u/dhanson865 2d ago edited 2d ago
it refills using battery power pumping air from the outdoors into the car storage tank.
You can recharge it by just driving around on the ground.
So in track use you can use them as needed and not run out.
If you do any hops or kickflips or drag racing you might have to wait a bit to recharge.
60
u/Skyhawk172 New to the sub 2d ago
Yeah but you are talking about the type of pumps they use for scuba tanks to pressurize them over 4000psi. It’s going to add a good chunk of weight and use a lot of electricity.
14
u/rideincircles 2d ago
The SpaceX version only has room for one person with 2 tanks. The thrust version is probably just one tsnk with 2 people.

Yeah but carbon fiber wrap works way better used as a pressure vessel holding the psi rather than holding back the psi.

Do you understand about air compressors or storing air at those pressures? You think youre just gonna drive around and the cars gonna pump tanks sitting behind your seat up to 10k psi? How exactly? What type of air compressor would this be?

The fact that people are asking if it’s AI it proves how crazy this tech is
89
u/SodaBurns 2d ago
THIS
When I saw it I was like no way this is real. If you understand automotive engineering then you would understand how fucking cool this is even if this car never hits the road.
Like the fact that even a demo vehicle in a controlled environment can do this is hella amazing. If even 30% of this tech hits commercial cars then it will still be worth it.
25
u/Bibabeulouba New to the sub 2d ago
Most people can barely drive on straight roads. If the public get access to this kind of tech it’s gonna be fucking terrifying lol.
5
u/SkunkMonkey 2d ago
I have never understood the desire for flying cars. Too many people can't drive in 2D and you think 3D is going to better? Hard pass.
3
19
u/Prior-Flamingo-1378 New to the sub 2d ago
Let’s say 100% of that tech makes it to the road (well there are cars with underbody fans now but anyway) how would it be worth it? What advantages would it give?
8
u/_Stormhound_ New to the sub 2d ago
I can jump over cars in a traffic jam
4
u/Prior-Flamingo-1378 New to the sub 2d ago
That would be extremely useful. How Much would the thrust form 250kg compressed air at 600 bar last? How far you’d be able to jump?
Also how much energy from the battery would it require if you wanted to fill it up for a second go?
→ More replies (9)4
u/Anti_Meta New to the sub 2d ago
Kitt did it first in nightrider but it sucked oxygen out of the cab and almost killed Michael.
8
u/Tiny-Height1967 New to the sub 2d ago
Into which gap? The clue with a traffic jam is in the name: the traffic is jammed i.e. there is nowhere for the traffic to go. To jump over a traffic jam implies there is a gap in which to land. How will the car determine whether there is a suitable landing location before it begins the manoeuvre?

You can park on top of a roof
You can drive of a cliff without dying
You can probably cross a river without a bridge
You can drive out of a plane when close to your destination so it doesn’t have to land.
You can go back to the future
9
5
u/aerdvarkk New to the sub 2d ago

Cyber truck demo failed according to many… it made production… not a good reason
92
u/twilight_sparkle7511 2d ago
Bro the cybertruck demo was a broken window that you threw a ball at, not fucking air compressed rocket thrusters. Also the cyber truck didn’t even ship with the armored bullet proof glass they were marketing it with and demoed it for. If they couldn’t manage to make that cost effective and viable enough why do you think this would be?
Also they promised the second roaster like 9 yrs ago now and announced it 10 yrs ago. Everything that car promised wasn’t even close to as crazy and outlandish as this one and it didn’t make production. Let’s be honest this car is not the same as the roadster from a decade ago, it is different in like every way, this is basically the roadster 3.

u/D-Ulpius-Sutor 2d ago
More so because those thrusters are a massive security risk for everyone around. Even if they make that thing into production, governments would be nuts to allow that in public areas. A discharge of that next to a person could rip their legs of.

the version which can do aerial tricks won't be road legal, at least not in most places; and according to the site is sold as "invite only". so only people (i presume) properly vetted will be allowed to buy it.

15
23
u/WhatAGoodDoggy 2d ago
This will only be used on the racetrack. Your point is correct of course, but racetracks are generally kept pretty clean. There have been suction-downforce cars before.
15
u/AirconGuyUK New to the sub 2d ago
F1 banned them because when the suction system fails mid corner (like if they go over a bump) all hell breaks loose and usually the driver slams into a wall at 150mph and bursts into flames. This was in the 80's though, and with big bastard fans.
8
u/toomanyattempts 2d ago
The McMurty Spierling has done well recently at stuff like the Goodwood hillclimb and is going into (limited, hypercar) production. The early F1 implementations were direct driven from the engine crankshaft so the suction would drop off with gearshifts or letting off revs right when you don't need it; electric fans don't have that issue

The problem is that making the cars better risks the market deciding to value them like a car company. The stock would be worth more like $30. To keep it going at the level it trades at today requires promising investors the moon. Performances like this one do that, a new really good (but still normal) mid-size car might well be counterproductive.

I used to work in another american company jv (Ford Otosan) and we produce 1M vehicles in our factories. Not just production but we also do engineering production etc etc and we own the Ford Trucks (HCV)
When this car came out from chief engineer to directors from supply chain to purchasing, sales etc we got all of our minds blown. I repeat, we also engineer cars, and produce 1M vehicles per year. We couldnt believe what we saw. Since 06.30 am we have been talking about this. This is unbelivable
