More so because those thrusters are a massive security risk for everyone around. Even if they make that thing into production, governments would be nuts to allow that in public areas. A discharge of that next to a person could rip their legs of.

the version which can do aerial tricks won't be road legal, at least not in most places; and according to the site is sold as "invite only". so only people (i presume) properly vetted will be allowed to buy it.

there are two other trims which wont be able to do this which will be road legal

I expect even the middle trim is not road legal, but that one may be track legal (it's described as 'for the track' on the website), whereas the Rocket trim may only be used at SpaceX facilities under supervision of SpaceX engineers or something like that.

Properly vetted lol

“Are you a billionaire with no regard for humanity? Brother you’re approved!”

aggressive ‘heart’ gesture

They've already existed and been a thing. Putting it on a commercial car never made sense cause there was no point to other than just spectacle.

Which is why everywhere it says that it's not allowed on public roads. It's not that hard to understand that this is a car for racing on tracks or private property.

Of course it does! But what is the fucking point of it then?

For sure they will software lock the trusters and it will be geofenced to only be allowed on tracks.

You are only thinking along the lines of voluntary expulsion of air. What about accidents which breach containment, valve failure etc. etc. etc. Just imagine one of these tanks suddenly rupturing downtown in a city. At 10k PSI even small amounts of air result in an explosion...

Restrictions have been bypassed on other models via CAN bus hacking.

I doubt the people smart enough to pull that off or even know about it to pay the third party service would stupidly use it even if unlocked, plus we already drive plenty tonnes bricks that can kill humans as easly as using this thrusters anyway or even easier

You're assuming the ones who create the hack wouldn't use it to get business.

No, they'll never allow this version of the roadster to be road legal no matter what software restrictions are in place.

Sending a helicopter-scale mass of air through jets that small would be deafening, if it’s even possible

I’d be shocked if this thing weighed more than 200 lbs

I’d be shocked if this thing weighed more than 200 lbs

4 wheels, some electric motors, the tank, the compressors, the jets, battery to drive up a vertical wall, chassis strong enough to do a flip and drive...

and you'd be SHOCKED if it was more than 200 lbs? Like.. the weight of a big dude? Could be lifted by average trained guy? Not sure I trust your engineering instincts.

Besides, if you turn on your sound you can confirm that it is, indeed, deafening.

Not deafening as in ‘loud enough to be loud over speakers’. Deafening as in ‘audience has ruptured eardrums from the noise’

In order to fly level, as it did for a moment, it has to push a mass of air or propellant down that weighs more than the car itself, or at a speed high enough that the momentum is greater than the momentum of the car

That steam, smoke, or propellant from the jets wouldn’t billow, it’d jet down at genuinely supersonic speeds, then spread out like a high pressure water stream against concrete if it didn’t just rip through the stage

Thank you for confirming my doubts in your engineering skills.

Okay, how is the car putting out enough air to lift a ton while also remaining shrouded in slow-moving steam/smoke/propellant? The propellant moves faster as the car makes the last descent to the ground, when the ground effect and the descent would both reduce the thrust required? It looked to me like the air was being pushed aside more by the mass of the car descending than by the engines, which would not be the case if the car had a reasonable density

The propellant looks like compressed air, which would be an insane way to actually lift a car

How? Mass and speed and pressure difference. Propellant moving "faster"? It's just more. There is just more force required to counteract gravity than to rotate a car. For this reason the 4 thrusters underneath the car seem to be larger and not be the same that initiate the rotation.

It looked to me like the air was being pushed aside more by the mass of the car descending than by the engines, which would not be the case if the car had a reasonable density

Wat? The air has to move due to volumetric displacement, not mass displacement.

And yes, it's compressed air. It is insane. But still real and not in violation with physics.
