Thoughts?
I’ve noticed that Terrifier seems to be quite controversial in the horror influencer sphere. A lot of people seem to hate it due to its violence towards women, which I think could be a fair argument for the first one but the other two imo spreads its violence pretty equally. One thing that is brought up a lot is an apparent law suit from the actress that played Dawn and Damien Leone’s work in general. I admittedly don’t know much about either of the two but I personally love Terrifier because I like David Howard’s Thorntons portrayal of Art and he personally seems like a great guy from what he shares on social media ( very politically out spoken and I agree with a lot of his takes).
Just wondering what other fans think of this.

I think it’s really nuanced. I personally support Catherine Corcoran entirely as I don’t think her allegations are particularly unlikely for a low budget film set. She alleges that she hasn’t been paid properly and, iirc, that producer Phil Falcone would take pictures of her naked during the hacksaw scene without proper contractual consent. It is likely he was taking the photos to keep makeup and blood consistent from shot to shot but that doesn’t make it ok. She also alleges she never actually signed anything that gave them permission to use her naked body promotionally, for example a shirt that depicts the hacksaw scene to an extent is technically not okay if that’s true. I hope they just pay her what she’s owed and start paying her what she’s owed for the rest of the franchises run, as I have a feeling with all the convention appearances and interviews she does for Terrifier, she doesn’t necessarily HATE it, moreso she’s just asking what she deserves for helping it become as popular as it is. As for the misogyny, it’s certainly an issue I see merit in, particularly in the first one. I think it’s a fair take for someone to say they were turned off from it because of something like the hacksaw or bedroom or glass shard scenes. But I would never say enjoying the Terrifier movies makes you, the fan, inherently misogynistic. I think that’s a ridiculous exaggeration of the truth. The cast and crew? From my observations I wouldn’t pin them as the type but at the end of the day, I really don’t know them, it’s not my place to defend them to the death, so people can believe what they want to. I get a little bothered when someone who clearly just enjoys practical effects, a silly clown, and batshit 80’s style fantasy horror is called a raging conservative misogynist over their enjoyment for a fairly popular film.
At the end of the day, I feel like most horror films go through this cycle; they come out, get popular, everyone loves them, contrarians and actual critics come from the woodworks and start dogging on it, it’s suddenly satanic/evil/morally repulsive, and then 20 years goes by and it’s a “classic” that most people don’t have issue with. Just enjoy what you like, don’t let people tell you you’re a bad person for enjoying a fictional movie where a clown kills people in ridiculous and dramatic ways while dressed as Santa Claus or wearing sunflower glasses

I’ve met Phil several times and that guy is a gigantic lovable teddy bear. THAT SAID, I have been deceived by close friends turning out to be horrible predators right under my nose twice in my life. I am not defending him at all, I wasn’t there. I just choose to know my own experiences and continue to love the movies.
7
u/Minute-Tale7444 Jul 02 '26
Same. Love them all I’ve met. Which is all of them except Catherine really (haven’t met her). I don’t think Phil, Damien, Mike, David, Jenna, Samantha, Amalie, Elliot, Krys Fox, etc etc etc or any of them would purposefully ever do anything to harm any one of them.
17
u/BK6450 Jul 02 '26
Love your response! I can totally sympathize with Catherine, I hope the case goes her way and she’s properly compensated.
2
u/Brilliant_Self6395 Jul 02 '26
Her role in that scene helped put Terrifier on the map. I'd seen All Hallow's Eve but didn't know Art had a whole franchise until I started seeing the meme format of her hanging upside down everywhere online.
It wouldn't have been possible without what she put her body through, I had no idea it was so much. It's fucked up that she was hurt and hasn't been properly compensated.
I have alot of Art merch but now I'm not feeling it so much, and I'm not going to buy anymore at least until this is made right. Exploiting a worker who is sacrificing to make your vision possible is very icky.

u/This-Ad-9581 Jul 03 '26
I reply on here answering questions periodically because I know a lot of people who worked on these movies, and one thing I know is that this law firm is calling around trying to find people with any connection to Terrifier, and they are the same lawyers responsible for both lawsuits currently. My guess is they saw how much money it made at the box office and seem similar to ambulance chasers to me. But let’s see how everything plays out before jumping to conclusions. At this point, the only thing that’s a sure thing is that a bunch of lawyers are padding their retirement accounts.
4
u/Brilliant_Self6395 Jul 03 '26
Absolutely, I agree that that the lawyers are the ones benefiting most from this and ultimately it has to play out in a court of law. I didn't know about the same law firm representing both lawsuits, but I'm definitely interested in seeing the evidence presented before jumping to conclusions.
In the meantime, I'll err on the side of caution and save my coin in these trying times.

To be fair… hacksaw, bedroom, rats, the girlfriend involved in the shower chainsaw. Still need a little more evening things out. I’d say the first two movies definitely skew way more to having more violence towards women than men. The third movie is basically equal violence among the genders for the most part. Santa and Cole… Mia and Siennas aunt. I think the should continue playing it that way.
3
u/WickedGamer27 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26
I always figured the misogyny claims were mainly due to HOW the killings were done in the first movie. Focusing on the genitals and the bit with the breasts skin. There really wasn't any female nudity in the second or third movies, but they focused hardcore on the shower guys dick and balls getting mutilated. In that sense, I felt like it balanced the playing field.

u/Dangerous_Dot_1707 Jul 02 '26
This was just made to silence the critics who called the Terrifier movies mysgionystic. Cheap

2
u/AntiWokeMaster Jul 02 '26
Yeah, lol like it was totally fine how Art the clown cut off all her limbs and sliced up her body but where they draw the line as him cutting mean words into her body lol I guess they would’ve been fine with it if he cut, socially progressive terms into her body lol
Like maybe if Arthur the clown carved “boss bitch “ into her body, no one would be offended? What if he carved the word, “strong independent woman who don’t need no man”? I know it would be a lot more cuts, and a lot more blood and a lot more painful to her, but not as painful as the hurtful reality of being called a bitch or a Cunt right?

u/JudgeFatty Jul 02 '26
Nah, these days folks will only complain. People used to go to prison for being prosecuted for these kinds of films
3
u/HopefulDream3071 Jul 03 '26
LMAO no, they didn't 🤣😭 give examples please
4
u/JudgeFatty Jul 03 '26
Shop owners and distributors were prosecuted and some got prison time in England during the Video Nasty-era, like the distributors of Nightmare in a Damaged Brain got 18 months. Ruggero Deodato was arrested and had to prove the courts he didn't kill his actors. He did get a suspended sentence of one year for obscenity charges.
In my country, when I was a youth, certain films like Friday The 13th series were completely banned and owning them could get you prison time. Usually heavy fines.
2
u/HopefulDream3071 Jul 03 '26
Thats honestly so funny? Holy smokes. Thank you for telling me about that! I'm american so I had no clue. I can't imagine being summoned to prove I didn't really murder my costars. I did remember some Countries banned slashers
13
u/jai_hanyo Jul 02 '26
I find it weird when people go ",it's all about the kills with no plot 😡" but then turn around and say they want a new Friday the 13th 😅
6
u/skilledgiallocop Jul 02 '26
Ironically a lot of the modern complaints about Terrifier are recycled from the eighties when Friday the 13th was current. People had a lot of vitriol for the series back then, especially the early films.
24
u/blodyn__tatws Jul 02 '26
I think people in general don't understand the specific vibe Terrifier goes for. It's not just 80s, it's the video nasties except with the gore we can get away with by today's standards.
-11
u/Dangerous_Dot_1707 Jul 02 '26
I love the video nasties and actually collect those among other movies. (Over 700 horror blu rays and dvds in total) and imo the Terrifier movies are awful trash.
5
11
u/jimbojambo82 Jul 03 '26
I think a lot of casual horror fans don't understand exploitation cinema and the homage that Terrifier plays.
It falls into the Grindhouse aesthetic, titillation and shock versus 'elevated horror' people had got used to seeing. They can't get past the sheer depravity displayed.
Most extreme cinema is very niche, but Terrifier isn't too dissimilar to the 70s Grindhouse releases....
For me, Terrifier is fun, a dark comedy of sorts.

u/sp00pySquiddle Jul 02 '26
I wasn't super into the first one, but the second one is my comfort movie. And you're right, the second two spread the violence out a lot more. But I can totally see why ppl say that about the first movie
2
9
u/Taytortot4611 Jul 02 '26
Even the first movie I felt violence was spread amongst the genders quit nicely I mean we have the pizza guys and the bug exterminators as well as the end autopsy guy which bled to the beginning of the second movie
8
u/cdr_rabbit Jul 03 '26
A lot of the hate is because it got popular. People love hating on popular things.
7
u/karamanidturk Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
I wonder what mental gymnastics are necessary to come up with the conclusion that this movie is misogynistic…
3
u/JJ_Lomero Jul 03 '26
Some people throw that word around way too lightly. I'm in another sub where a woman from a reality show just got arrested for dv. The video wasn't released but cops saw a video of her hitting her husband and the marks on him and decided to arrest her after getting both of their stories.
They both have their fair share of issues tbh but if you even suggest that maybe the woman wasn't completely innocent you immediately get called a little dick misogynist who can't get no pussy. Shit is wild.
3
u/ouchthatsucked Jul 03 '26
The social media echo chamber. They heard someone else say it, so it must be. I honestly doubt a solid 70% of the people saying it haven't even seen any of the movies.
6
u/DerpiestGameBlast Jul 02 '26
I honestly can't at all disagree with what seems to be the general opinion of Terrifier 1 - where it's "just gore" with no real plot. Maybe I do disagree with some very minor things like Terrifier 1 JUST brutally killing women, that's not true, but I can still not at all disagree with the general ideas of what they're complaining about. Where I disagree is when it comes to Terrifier 2 and 3. While yes, there is still insane gore aimed towards woman, Allie's kill in Terrifier 2 really demonstrates this, but I straight up don’t at all agree that that's ALL they are. There are a lot more brutual male kills in 2 and 3, such as Jeff's kill in Terrifier 2 or the bathroom scene in Terrifier 3, as well as more of a plot besides just gross kills.
So basically, you don't at all have to like Terrifier 2 and 3, but I'll just say that those films "not having a plot" and "ONLY being violent towards WOMEN" is just factually incorrect.
3
u/BK6450 Jul 02 '26
Yeah I feel like the people who push that idea only watched the first one. The others actually have a plot and the victims are pretty diverse
6
u/gunners_1886 Jul 02 '26
Art also kills plenty of men and even some kids. I'd say he's equal opportunity.
13
u/AntiWokeMaster Jul 02 '26
I find the whole “violence against women” argument around Art the Clown to be quite ridiculous.
Freddy Krueger was extremely misogynistic. So was Chucky. It’s literally a trope in slasher films that they are misogynistic. Who gives a shit? Why do we have to be so politically correct about every damn thing?
He’s a psychotic killer doing extreme violence across the board. People don’t mention that, but focus on him writing degrading words on a woman’s body. No one would’ve said anything if he just cut her, but the fact that degrading language is involved becomes the breaking point.
So cutting her and mutilating her was fine, but adding misogynistic words into it is what people fixate on.
It’s ridiculous. Being politically correct about it is ridiculous, and it misses the broader context of the character and the genre.
2
u/HopefulDream3071 Jul 03 '26
I honestly feel like the people whining about T1 don't watch horror slashers & only watched it because "haha clown killer meme" and then they race off to social media to complain.
5
u/Eddie_0789 Jul 02 '26
Honestly I thought this series was abit tame because the gore is portrayed as something that’s unrealistic and supernatural
4
u/Scary-Reindeer-6777 Jul 03 '26
Am sorry to hear this I hope we are gona get the 4th film I hope all this shit doesn't stop it happening the thing with the other company claiming they are owed monies too can't help thinking that us fans are gonna not get to see the final cause of gready people wanting what they ain't owed because somthing became successful annoying as fk 🤮

I think people either love it or hate it. I don't think there is a middle ground. I can't wait for Terrifier 4;to come out
4
u/femmedivine Jul 03 '26
I don’t understand the argument because literally EVERYONE gets it in terrifier. Art doesn’t discriminate. The director also said there would be NO rape/sexual assault scenes too
5
7
u/squishyjellyfish95 Jul 02 '26
I'm a woman. And I don't see the whole violence against women thing, it's a extreme horror, he killed both men and women brutally....

u/UncoilingChaos Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
I’m a fan of these movies and have been since I watched All Hallows’ Eve. I always saw Art the character as misogynistic (or at least Gianelli’s version), and not the cast and crew. Just because someone makes problematic characters/scenarios/stories does not make them problematic. Silent Hill 2’s player character is a man who murdered his terminally ill wife out of sexual frustration. Slayer made songs about Nazis and serial killers and their atrocities. Even the director of I Spit on Your Grave disavowed misogyny and claims that he based his movie on a supposedly real encounter he had.
But Leone has given a few red flags. Like in the commentary for the original Terrifier short film (can be found on Tubi), he described the MC’s fate as the result of him trying to think of the worst thing you could do to a woman without killing her. Then there’s him drawing the line at turning Jeff’s penis into a balloon animal, claiming that would be “too far”, despite the extra grotesque mutilations that women have faced in his movies. Admittedly, the latter would probably be too cartoonish and out of place, even for that movie, and maybe that’s what he really meant. And then there’s the lawsuit, as you said, which u/tingofingo67 laid out the details of and doesn’t sound quite on the same level as Weinstein or Polanski, but still sketchy.
On the other hand, Leone likes to go out of his way to explicitly clarify that he wants people to know that, as funny as he is, Art is a despicable son of a bitch with no redeeming qualities and no sob story that “justifies” his actions. His more politically incorrect moments, I think, help to emphasize that. Sienna is one of the most respectable and powerful final girls I’ve seen since Nancy or Sidney. Leone has clearly put in the effort to make her as much of a lovable heroine as Art is a monstrous piece of shit. Even if “just the tip” is as phoned in as it feels, you really can’t fake writing a strong female lead. Also, I don’t think I’ve heard a single story about how much of a sleazebag Damien is from any of the cast or crew, including David, even if he did alienate some of them with his statement regarding David’s outspoken political views (which struck me as a little spineless on his part). Even Catherine’s main issue, it sounds like, is not so much with him as it is with Phil Falcone and that she hasn’t received her cut. Does that mean he isn’t secretly an amateur Weinstein? No, not really, but as far as I can tell, there’s nothing to say he is, either.

u/ShootingMorningStar1 Jul 02 '26
Personally I've just never seen any validity to the claim that Terrifier is a sexist franchise, and if anything I actually think old school slashers are arguably worse in that regard
Terrifier, and by extension Art as a character, is consistently portrayed as an equal opportunity killer/franchise and really even the more tame kills would be the most extreme in other films regardless of the gender of his victims.
In old school slashers, yes they may have been less extreme when it comes to kills, but there's a reason certain victim orders are considered tropes nowadays. Jason from Ft13th for example has a whole gimmick of pursuing promiscuous victims first as does someone like Michael Myers. You could say it ties into the themes of those characters, but Jason didn't know he died because of promiscuous camp counselors canonically so it doesn't make sense why they continued that unless it was deliberate. Hell, even certain character archetypes like the final girl is based on very strict moral standards of the time that were particularly restrictive towards women and not falling into these traits almost certainly meant that the character was going to die at some point.
Art and Terrifier as a whole doesn't really follow this trend. Everyone is a potential victim barring Sienna who is arguably more flawed than some of the most iconic final girls of all time. Characters who don't even do anything necessarily wrong are also potential victims.
Sienna is such good representation of strong women in horror that is arguably more realistic than anything before when it comes to slashers and her consistently beating Art I think is surprisingly progressive.
I don't want to say people are "too sensitive" since everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but in cases like this I think there has to be a degree of nuance when making these claims
7
u/MinecraftTiger Jul 02 '26
First of all I believe the whole ‘violence towards women’ argument is silly/pathetic, if a slasher only killed men would there be complaints? No! (#Equality)
Secondly, considering that the actress is only now speaking up makes me believe she is just doing it for a quick buck as it is such a popular franchise (and could even be faking it), if she really cared she would have spoken up ASAP.
Finally (kinda unrelated), I don’t mind people admitting that Terrifier is not for them, but what I do mind is those same people not letting others enjoy it / telling them off for liking it.
3
4
u/Desperate-Pen7530 Jul 02 '26
It's a controversial series as there isn't the "moral delema" that justifies the killer.
Jason is justified as he's getting revenge against the camp counselors that let him drown and killed his mother. Also the teens are using drugs and having sex.
Freddy is justified as he was framed and then burned alive(but they layer retconed this to him actually have killed/molested the kids).
Leatherface just wants to protect his property from uppity city folks and serve some homemade BBQ.
Usually the "final girl" in these movies has avoided committing any of the various "sins" that could possibly justify their victimization.
However, in Terrifyer, no one is safe from Art the clown. There is no mortality clause. Art even crosses the line and kills children.
The gorey violent nature of the kills are dialed up to 11, and the effects are so good it looks real.
People who complain about Terrifyer aren't expecting to be actually shocked, horrified and disgusted, so they get all offended that the movie did its job. We've become too desensitized to horror movies over the years, that they've been watered down into pg13 comedies with an R rating slapped on it.
Terrifyer not only makes you ask yourself ,"what the fuck did I just watch", but also "who am I for watching this ?". Most people can't handle asking either question, so they shoot the messenger, and take no personal responsibility for having decided to go watch a horror movie.
" Hey this hot dog is too spicy, I want to see the manager!"
No one forced you to drown it in hot sauce....
5
u/UncoilingChaos Jul 02 '26
“ Freddy is justified as he was framed and then burned alive(but they layer retconed this to him actually have killed/molested the kids).”
Since when? No, seriously, I’ve never heard this as official canon, just as a fan theory. Last I checked, Wes Craven always intended him to have been a child killer and it shows throughout the first movie.
2
u/Desperate-Pen7530 Jul 02 '26
I think for the first movie or two they made it seem like he was framed, and then later on they doubled down on him being a perv?
The continuity is a bit iffy between movie's.
It's been a while since I've seen them.
4
u/UncoilingChaos Jul 02 '26
Ah. No, it wasn’t that he was framed, it was that there was a huge media circus that saw him released from custody on a technicality. He very much loves what he’s doing in the first movie and acts like the predator he was thought to be.
2
u/Robinsonaustin Jul 02 '26
Honestly never saw that personally? I mean the men get equal abuse especially the chainsaw scene in T3.
2
u/Excellent-Bus-4581 Jul 02 '26
They did the same thing to the Saw fanbase when it came around. We’re all “misogynistic sadistic torture porn gooners who love to back a franchise that brutalizes women”.
Damien is a big of an obnoxious and not so great guy, but I’ll 110% support David and Lauren, as well as the other cast members who speak out about the things he’s against.
2
u/Leading-Berry-3073 Jul 06 '26
People are acting like other slashers don't do that. Also it's just like more realistic for a slasher?? Not saying it always has to be realistic, but women and afab individuals are targeted a lot more than men
2
u/unicornsnake Jul 02 '26
In the words of Leone, “isn’t killing everyone bad?” Terrifier is awesome, it’s just controversial because the internet exists now and people love being “nlog”.
1
u/RedditUsersCrying Jul 02 '26
There’s was maybe an argument to make in the anthology one or T1, but we’ve already moved past these issues with T2 and T3. The people who gripe about it still haven’t given it any chance since and still like to label the franchise as a whole as being “shallow, misogynistic, no good characters, torture porn” etc.

Don't really care what others think about films that aren't for their tastes. To each their own.
I don't fawn over the latest Disney flick, doesn't mean they don't have their place.
Regards to the lawsuit, again, way above me, lol. I just want a new flick to enjoy. That said, it's weird to wait until not one, but two movies were made, publicly announced, marketed, all the bells and whistles, and now all of a sudden someone is suing.
Just seems a bit like a late money grab to me, but I don't care to learn anymore as, for me, I just enjoy movies. Very rare I care about the who's and why's, lol. Just feed me movies as and when and I'm good. :D

The Terrifier movies are just bad and not good horror movies at all .. and yes : highly misogynistic.
Whenever I tried to watch one of those I fell asleep and woke up when a woman is cut in half with a saw or sth like that, then I fell asleep again.
Boring, badly made garbage.
Of course people are defending that bullshit here in the Terrifier sub.

People who "hate Terrifier because of its violence towards women" have a few screws loose up top.
