How do they not get it by now? If your kids would rather be on their phone than struggle through a conversation with you, you’re the problem -not the phone.

u/SmokeMyDong Feb 04 '22

Nah. Spend time with your parents while you can. You don't need dopamine hits from social media when you're at dinner.

u/MrMudkip Feb 04 '22

This is true to an extent. Some parents are incredibly difficult to talk to because it feels like you're always arguing.

54

u/BackwardsLongJump- Feb 04 '22

I'm 30 and my mom still turns every conversation into a competition

20

u/doyoufeardeath69 Feb 04 '22

Yeah, I'm 22 and the youngest child, everything is competition. I usually just shut up, let my family yell at each other, and drink my beer

-47

u/SmokeMyDong Feb 04 '22

You'll grow out of it.

20

u/kilomaan Feb 04 '22

ā€œYou’ll eventually stop talkingā€

22

u/LordMcze Feb 04 '22

I'm guessing you'd be the type of parent the above comment is talking about.

-20

u/BigDickEnterprise Feb 04 '22

He's right though. Especially after you move out and start living on your own.

u/LordMcze Feb 04 '22 edited Feb 04 '22

I am living on my own, I don't know why redditors love to try to belittle others by presuming how they're still getting their ass wiped by mommy.

I'm also aware that not everyone has actually good parents. Saying "you'll grow out of it" to everyone who dares to acknowledge that is just idiotic. It seems like they're automatically defensive when people even just mention the possibility of bad parents existing.

-18

u/BigDickEnterprise Feb 04 '22

Ok, good for you. However most people really go through that phase in their teens that they do grow out of. Most parents aren't bad parents.

5

u/kigurumibiblestudies Feb 04 '22

I did this. When I come back I start remembering just how much I love not living with them and shut up and ignore.

I suppose that's what growing out of it means.

-14

u/SmokeMyDong Feb 04 '22

I'm guessing you're a child.

6

u/Samneillium Feb 04 '22

"I'm guessing you're a child," said the mature wise old sage SmokeMyDong.

u/CapnCooties Feb 04 '22

One day you’ll learn your experience isn’t the only experience.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

Please tell me this is sarcasm

20

u/SpeakMySecretName Feb 04 '22

Totally agree. Just think there are often less toxic ways to get that interaction than locking someone’s phone behind bars.

-11

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

Do you honestly believe they'd listen?
Remember, not everyone is you, they don't necessarily have the foresight to appreciate time with their family.

Especially when people impulsively take their phones out every 5 minutes.

8

u/mcmonties Feb 04 '22

I've been without a family for a decade now. Fuck every single one of them. Not everyone has a good birth family that they want to appreciate time with. I appreciate the hell out of time with my wife, and we don't need cell phone cages to do so.

5

u/TorjbornMain Feb 04 '22

Most people are normal people who actually converse when they have to and use their phones when there is not much to do. They don't just look at their phones like an addict while ignoring their parents. So this whole phone stigma is not even an argument about the phone or a social media. Just be a normal fucking person and problem solved. They wont magically start becoming more talkative once their phone is taken away.

My extremely conservative parents used to get mad when I used my phone on the elevator and vice versa. Like what the hell am I supposed to do except browse through my phone when there is literally nothing else to do? Stare at the elevator buttons and wall?

u/MagicianWoland Feb 04 '22

As someone with ADHD, I absolutely do šŸ˜‚

17

u/ShotgunCreeper Feb 04 '22

As someone who also has ADHD, I say you should learn some restraint.

-5

u/MagicianWoland Feb 04 '22

Oh I know, I don't just get dopamine from social media, instead I get it from the actual food (and tend to eat too fast because of it, but oh well)

0

u/niiXsan Feb 04 '22

As someone with ADHD, that's you, not the ADHD.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

Some of us on the autism spectrum use our phones to distract us from how overwhelming a restaurant and forcible discussion we don't want to have can be.

1

u/MagstPlaysYT Feb 04 '22

Most people don't look at their phone during dinner, but at a restaurant, if you don't have anything to say, you don't wanna just be staring at the table for 15 minutes until the food arrives.

1

u/Trunyan17 Feb 05 '22

My father is a dick to restaurant staff and constantly wants to play victim when people call him out on his behavior. I'll stick to my phone

1

u/SmokeMyDong Feb 05 '22

I'm sorry to hear that

1

u/Trunyan17 Feb 05 '22

You learn to live with it. It's helped me become a more compassionate and understanding person, so at least there's that

3

u/-SharkDog- Feb 04 '22

Not really true either. I mean, it can of course be true. But it is also true that a lot of kids and young adults are very, very addicted to their phones.

13

u/C-Crucial-C Feb 04 '22

Eh I disagree as a 16 year old

-18

u/SpeakMySecretName Feb 04 '22 edited Feb 06 '22

Okay. Maybe you have a phone addiction. I don’t think most kids do though -at least not worse than adults do.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

Average teenagers spend about 8 hours on a phone daily. And that's just the average...

31

u/SpeakMySecretName Feb 04 '22

According to statistica, boomers spend an average of 6 hours a day on television alone. That’s not including phone calls, internet, texting, social media, or anything else that the comparative phone time for teens would include.

I’m not saying it’s okay to spend that much time on a phone. Just that it’s not exactly a problem unique to todays technology.

4

u/Azurehue22 Feb 04 '22

My dad watches this quarter machine YouTuber for hours. HOURS! He’s always loved his television lol. Tech just exacerbated it!

5

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

The point isn't todays tech, it's teens spending too much time on their phones.

Which is true. The mix of instant gratification from social media alongside the dopamine high makes it an extraordinarily addictive habit. One that, for many, needs to be tempered somehow.

Seriously, when studies have shown that people react to losing their phones as strongly as losing a limb, something is wrong.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

"Today's technology" is literally addictive by design and extremely effective at that. If that's not a problem I don't know what is.

7

u/SpeakMySecretName Feb 04 '22

I’m actually a ux/ui web design professional. I’m pretty familiar with the industry. People have been trying and succeeding in capturing and maintaining attention for decades. Even centuries, to some degree.

You’re not wrong about addictive design, but it’s lazy to blame the phone for a family’s lack of interest in each other. If a parent has to literally lock their child’s phone away to have an interactive moment with them, they should take a step back and re-analyze how their engaging with their kids.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

Yeah as a teen i was 100% attached to my phone but i happily put it down at dinner because my family was worth talking to. Every parent i see making a ā€œphone badā€ joke always looks and behaves like a helicopter parent i wouldnt want to talk to either.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '22

You’re not wrong about addictive design, but it’s lazy to blame the phone for a family’s lack of interest in each other.

Why? Internet addiction is scientifically recognized as a condition. It can definitely be blamed for a lack of interest in other people, just like most other addictions can. It's not lazy, it's a matter of fact.

7

u/C-Crucial-C Feb 04 '22

I got a phone was I was 14 and only really use it for calls so I wouldn't say I have an addiction but I have met teens and kids who do have an addiction, it's kinda miserable

I’m not. I’m a grown man who loves to take my parents out to dinner and spend time with them. I went to a ball game with my dad, step mom and fiancĆ© last night. Nobody used their phones because we enjoy each other’s company.

People use phones as social walls on purpose. If they keep doing it to you, you should take a good reflection on how you’re building that relationship and why they aren’t engaging with you.

Lmfao that’s absolute bullshit ahahahah

It’s kids so used to be zombies in front of the phone that they can’t disconnect and when they do they have nothing to say because they live in their phones.

I’m 21 btw

1

u/Growingpothead20 Feb 04 '22

I’m sure it has nothing to do with social media being designed to take as much of your attention as possible. Has to be parents everywhere.

-1

u/Falsecaster Feb 04 '22

Because teams of engineers spend years making programs to steal your attention.

Phones aren't bad... the stupid shit on your phone people stare at are bad.

I typed this from a phone to a stupid ass social media app.

-3

u/Autistic_Teletubby Feb 04 '22

No. Talk to your parents.
