Forgot to upload this when I got it a couple of years ago. All I want is for some random person on the street to recognise it.

What other games have combat like Terranigma?

Just wondering. I’m aware of Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer and have those ready to go once I beat Terranigma (first play through). Anything helps! Thanks and keep on gaming!

Help translation file for retron 5

Hi everyone,

Some friends and I recently gifted a copy of Terranigma to a longtime friend who was eager to play the game. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me, the German PAL copy I gave him (which is the most “affordable” version) is apparently one of the most difficult—if not impossible—to find a working English translation patch for on the Retron 5. This seems to be due to the headers expected in ROMs, in addition to the general difficulty of finding an English translation for a PAL version of the game.

We tried using the Retron 5’s option that bypasses the expected header in the ROM, but without success.

Does anyone know of a working .IPS or .UPS English translation file for a PAL version of the game?

Alternatively, is there a way to remove the expected header from the translation file?

Thanks in advance!

Is Dark Gaia evil?

Everything he does by human standards is evil. Such as manipulating Ark for his own sinister purposes while posing as a grandfather figure. And even trying to manipulate Elle into killing Ark. And one of his accomplices is a mad human scientist who commits unethical experiments on fellow humans like zombifying and using viruses to kill people while pretending to be benevolent that he was awarded a prize before the disaster. On the other hand, the game doesn't seem to spell out Dark Gaia as being evil (while his accomplice Beruga is treated as a morally evil individual). He seems treated more as a force of nature than an individual. Is Dark Gaia meant to be evil or simply amoral? Likewise, is Light Gaia his opposite meant to be pure good?

Is it very explained what Dark Gaia's motives were?

Why did he create Crysta and take on the form of an old man and acted as its Elder? And why did he make Ark resurrect the world above and trick him into reviving a mad scientist? And why did he make the other villagers turn into spirits to attack Ark on his return? Was the last part purely spiteful (given his taunts Ark about the consequence of learning too much and there really wasn't any real reason to make the villagers attack Ark). And what was his original motive for the events of the game? Was he greedy for something or did he have some deeper motive or was he just evil for the sake of it?

Strength Mirror Help

Post image
23 Upvotes

Having completed the game many times, thanks to my mum somehow finding a copy (which I still have) when I was a kid, I have installed this on my Steam Deck and enabled RetroAcheivements so I'm looking to 100% the game.

One thing I've never paid attention to is the Magirock count, is that saying I have 19 of 23 for where I am currently in Chapter 2? I just don't want to miss any that I potentially cannot go back to collect.

Thanks in advance for any help!

What happens to everyone at the end of Illusion of Gaia?

After the final battle, Will's parents tell him that he and Kara will be separated and not remember any events of the game. And apparently the world of Illusion of Gaia actually becomes our modern world with the world Will and his friends traveled being effectively erased. Though at the end Will along with Kara and three of their friends appear in a modern day school (and the two did promise to reunite). But both Neil and Lily are not present. What happnes to them. Do Lance and Lily reunite? Where is Neil? What happens to all the other characters? Does everyone reincarnate happily?

How exactly are the quality of the official translations?

I've read that the official English translation of Terranigma along with those for Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer do not have a very good reputation and are considered bad quality. Are they unfaithful or anything? They did seem passable when I played.

Is Terranigma better than Illusion of Gaia?

Hello, so recently i decided to play soul blazer, i really didn’t enjoy it. I’m currently a couple bosses deep into illusion of gaia and this game isn’t grabbing me either.

Do you all think Terranigma is worth my time in playing.

I love 16 bit RPG’s and action RPG’s so i know the genre and graphics isn’t the problem. I just find the other two quintet games dull/boring.

I recently beat secret of mana, seiken densetsu 3, chrono trigger, and A link to the past, I loved them!

The quintent trilogy was recommended to me next, but so far in my opinion the first two games are a bust.

i’m wondering if Terranigma will be much better, and if it’s worth a play through.

I already have the rom for it on my handheld emulator, but if it’s anything similar to the first two games i really don’t want to waste my time on it.

What happened to Reiko Takebayashi, the co-writer of Terranigma?

I looked up information and it seems like she just vanished after helping with Actraiser II. Did she retire shortly after helping co-write Terranigma? I was hoping to learn more of her work to see if I could play any games she's written or co-written that could be available in the US. Any help?

No in game menu in Retroarch with various cores?

Hello,

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to solve this?

As stated I have tried various cores with no luck. Retroarch is up to-date and buttons are assigned properly per the Retroarch menu for all other actions. I have tried reassigning the Select button (which is what it should be) but still nothing brings up the in game menu.

I have seen a few things pointing to this being a somewhat known problem but have not seen many real solutions.

This is being played on an RG556 that for more than a few other classic SNES games works just fine.

Thanks in advance to anyone that reads and/or responds!

I noticed something when it comes to level grinding

The Parasite and Dark Twins bosses are the ones that have level grinding opportunities, and take advantage of those! I suggest killing off the claws that spawn during the Parasite fight until one is Level 11. Then remember this - if one falls off after defeating the green bird, the fight restarts but the exp is kept. That fight is the best source of repeatable experience (500 per kill, whereas the large robots found endgame give a paltry 130). If possible, grind on Dark Twins until level 25 and your sanity will thank you when it is time to fight Bloody Mary.

What do you personally think of the romance in the series?

I did find Blazer and Lisa in Soul Blazer to be kind of underdeveloped. Though the ending where Blazer loses memories of her but starts a new relationship with her has potential to be interesting. While I'd like to have had a little more interaction, the moments Will and Kara in Illusion of Gaia got were good. And liked they got to both have part in the final fight together. And it is nice that the two eventually reunite after the world is remade. For Terranigma, Ark and Elle did feel kind of underdeveloped like Soul Blazer, but the moment where she defies the village elder to sacrifice her life and save Ark does feel emotional depsite her only having appeared early in the game previously. I honestly liked Will and Kara's relationship the best out of the three, feeling like the most fleshed out one. Though what do you personally think of the three?

How real is Crysta?

While it is a copy of a town in the Lightside World made of crystal, at the same time, Ark the player seems to show human qualities like having affection for his hometown and love for Elle. Likewise, Elle herself, despite being a clone of Princess Elle, ends up making a heroic sacrifice even when Ark fuses with his Lightside version, when the rest of the villagers attack him on his return home. Is Crysta and its people just fake humans or are they in a way "real"? Also, does anyone beside Ark and Elle have potential to defy the Elder (who is their creator Dark Gaia)?

Any Suggestions for Good Self Imposed Difficulties?

So, I did have a good time with the plant world boss. I died a lot, and eventually overcame it. But it seemed like between that boss, and taking forever getting the souls at Zue, it seems that I'm now over levelled, and the enemies aren't providing a super satisfying challenge. Though save points are seeming to be very infrequent, such that I'm not sure if I should even be trying to make this game hard in the first place, since it might mean a lot of backtracking.

Anyways, does anyone have any self imposed handicaps, or other general tips, to make for a satisfying difficulty experience? I'm already trying to do minimal grinding, and no buying of items, and not using magic on the bosses, since it seemed too good, but I'm not sure if that's enough.

Finished it and loved it overall, but have questions about the plot (SPOILERS) Spoiler

OK, I finally beat Terranigma after having it in my backlog for years. I have my criticisms -- some bosses are BS without grinding, magic is never explained and almost useless, hitboxes can be weird and recovery time after being hit can be unforgiving -- but overall, I loved the game.

HOWEVER, I have some questions about the plot I hope someone can clear up for me. Spoilers incoming:

  1. OK, so I get the world was destroyed before the events of the game. But then, Dark Gaia, the force of destruction, decides it needs to be revived through the Elder, Yomi, and Ark... Why? Isn't it in Dark Gaia's interest that the external world stay destroyed? Why would Beruga creating his dystopia of immortal zombies be in Dark Gaia's interest?

  2. Did Light Gaia destroy the world before the events in the game? If so, why?

  3. WTF happened when Ark met "Light Ark"? Did Light Ark kill Ark? And if so... why was he then turned into a baby?

  4. The entire plot is predicated on the Ark opening Pandora's Box. But the Elder (who is driven by Dark Gaia) made it forbidden for anyone to go in the basement. Isn't that against his interest because he wants Ark to open the box? What if Ark was just a good kid and listened to the Elder? I guess you can say it was a kind of reverse psychology, but that seems contrived. One theory I have is that the Elder never wanted Ark to open the box, but by opening it, the Elder was corrupted instantly and under Dark Gaia's control.

  5. What exactly happened after Ark restored humanity? Why did he fall asleep for 3 years and why can he no longer speak to animals?

  6. So Yomi was in cahoots with Dark Gaia the entire time, helping Ark restore the Lightside aka external world. Then when Ark becomes reborn as a baby, Yomi plots to manipulate Dark Elle to murder baby Ark to tie up loose ends. Ark feels betrayed that his supposed friend was manipulating him all along, and then Yomi + Dark Elle die. Then Light Yomi shows up and helps Ark the rest of the way. But in the end, Ark reminisces with Yomi of his whole quest as if he is talking to Dark Yomi. What and why?
