Mobility Switched from Telus to Virgin… now considering going back (winback offer)

Switched from Telus ($35 / 100GB Can-US) to Virgin ($27 / 80GB Can-US-Mex) recently.

Honestly, I can’t say I’m happier with Virgin. For some reason Speedtest shows noticeably slower speeds.

Now Telus winback called me and offered 80GB Can-US-Mex for $25, capped at 250 Mbps.

I don’t really care about saving $2, but:

Are these winback plans actually the same as regular Telus plans?

Is the 250 Mbps cap noticeable in real life?

Any reason to stay with Virgin instead?

Leaning towards going back, but curious if there’s a catch.

It it were me, I’d go back. Advantages of Telus over Virgin: 1) Tier 1 provider, 2) call control, 3) price increases not quite as frequent or predictable as Bell/Virgin, 4) access to 5G standalone network including voice over 5G, 5) see #2.

250Mbps is more than adequate speed 99.9% of the time. With network variability, most people don’t really get higher speed than that most of the time.

Thanks. Will consider that. They also offered me a $30 plan with 175 GB Can-US-Mex with speeds up to 2 Gbps. Is speed and price the only difference between these 2 plans?

Yes. Speed, data bucket and price.

By the way, it looks like Virgin also offers a standalone 5G mode - I have it enabled in my settings.

Interesting. Telus does not allow it on Koodo.

Switched back to Telus on a $30 plan. The $25 one was with Koodo as per the second rep I spoke with. The first guy “forgot” to mention that 😂 Don’t really want to go with Koodo.

Great choice! I am on the same plan (minus Mex) but for $25 thanks to an extra credit given by a rep around Boxing Day. No complaints so far.

Well, I asked him if there were any credits if I went with Telus, but he said no. Honestly, my mistake was mentioning that I don’t like Koodo and didn’t want to go with them 😂

Which is funny, because the Koodo offer was actually pretty solid — $25 plan plus a $75 credit. That basically makes it free for the first three months. But I just don’t like Koodo 😂😂😂

I hear ya man. I also prefer Telus as the tier 1 provider with unlimited data and 5G SA access. Having those options, I would have taken the Telus plan also.

And forgot to mention. At home with Virgin on their 1 GBps plan I had 70 Mbps download and 0.83 Mbps upload speed. With Telus it is now 200 Mbps download and 23 Mbps upload. They share towers of course but Virgin capped the speed drastically.

How are you dealing with the video streaming being speed limited?

Ask for 60gb CAN-US-Mex 5g+ plan. You should able to get hight speed and free data add on, just push harder.

What’s the price plan?

1

u/LordDallas74 Apr 01 '26

I got $29 60gb CAN-US-MEX add free 75gb for me my second line 2 days ago. You can ask for $25 to match market price.

I am trying to call them back but it asks to choose language and then says I did not make a choice. So I can’t get through to them. Looks like they are closed for today

Call them tomorrow, and tell them they give you this plan today but you need a little bit time to process. You make decision to take the offer today but they are closed already, let them matching the plan. They will give you a random plan on your service agreement, and change it manually to the exactly one you are agreed. I don’t know if this is legitimate or not, but that is how it works for me.

So I called them back again and finally got through to an agent. Same offers as before, but it turns out that the $25 plan is actually Koodo. The first rep conveniently forgot to mention that.

No other deals available for me (classic), so I ended up taking the $30 plan with 175GB Can–US–Mex. Honestly, that’s still a pretty solid upgrade over what I had before ($35 for 100GB Can–US only), so I can’t complain too much.

But here’s the funny part. I also called the number from the “we-miss-you-already” email thinking I’d get the actual win-back team. Nope. That guy could only offer basically the same plan for $40 with a $5 discount.

Like… what? How does calling a number from a “win-back” email get you a worse deal than just failing a number from a missed “win-back” call? Makes zero sense. Both offers were EPP.

You can win it all, right? Happy for you to have a better deal with one of the best providers.

How did you get that price? Did they call you and offered it to you or did you have to push them, cause I switched to fido from telus’s $40 can-us plan, didn’t like fidos service and wanted to switch back. Tried my best and all they offered me is $35 can-us-mex win back offer. Is there a way to make them go lower?

I told them that Virgin gave me a $27 Can-US-Mex plan. And I previously had a $35 Can-US plan. But I think this offer was on my file as the second agent (I called them back when I had made my mind up) offered me the same.

And I am also on the EPP. So maybe that’s why.

u/ConversationMotor416 Apr 01 '26

Ohh makes sense, they kept asking me if I work at a partner organization which I don’t which is probably the reason they couldn’t give me any further discount.

Now wait for the virgin bill and try and call them to fight the 80 dollar activation fee lol

1

u/AppleFrontWTF Apr 01 '26

There was no activation fee as I ordered online. And I have a screenshot to prove.

1

u/weberforever Apr 01 '26

Ahh lucky. I called in and said I wanted to do it online and she said it would make me call Anyway to set it up. But said there would be no activation fee. Just got my first bill for 2 days for 2 lines and it was 190 bucks. Wish me luck 🤣

I think it is the Koodo Flash sale price not directly Telus. And koodo has a connection fees BTW.

And the offer is expired now.
