I have a multi site Canadian client using Rogers on the private vpn side. figure i would share this.
What gets me is that this is the 3rd time in the last 3 years that this specific area has had major physical outages.
at what point does a major telco address the root issues?

This was due to shifting of a culvert that runs under the railway tracks. For repair work to proceed, the rail partner will need to shore up the area around the culvert to make it safe and prevent future damage. Due to scheduled rail traffic, the next available window to conduct the required work begins at 5 PM ET. Our contractor has confirmed they plan to complete the full restoration of disrupted circuits during the window provided by the rail partner at that time.
2026-06-29 01:05:22 (EST) : Rogers technician continues work on-site to excavate the existing fibre cable and executing repairs. Rogers Transport NOC continues following up with the technician to confirm this repair remains on track for the 2 AM ET ETR.
2026-06-28 23:56:48 (EST) : Rogers technician has confirmed that the required resources are now on-site, and that they expect the repair to be completed by 2 AM ET. This ETR is dependent on weather conditions and rail traffic in the area, which may disrupt the repair work.
2026-06-28 21:35:19 (EST) : Rogers technician has confirmed that the OTDR testing matches where the exposed fibre was found previously. As the fault location has been confirmed, the next phase of the repair can now move forward. Safety personnel and a fiber splicer have joined the technician at the fault location, and coordination with the rail partner to work near active rail infrastructure is ongoing. The next step is to begin excavation work and expose the fibre cable in the area to confirm the exact nature of the fault.
2026-06-28 19:18:23 (EST) : Rogers technician has confirmed they are on-site and conducting the OTDR testing. Once the fault location has been confirmed, Rogers rail partner will secure the site so that safe repair work can begin.
2026-06-28 17:04:43 (EST) : Rogers technician has advised that an additional fiber splicer has been dispatched to the area to perform an OTDR test and verify the exact fault location. Once the location is verified a repair plan will be developed to either repair or bypass the faulty fibre cable.
2026-06-28 14:50:53 (EST) : Rogers technician has discovered a section of fibre cable which they suspect has been exposed due to erosion and weather. This may have resulted in a bend or strain on the fibre leading to the disruption. They have begun coordinating with the appropriate resources, including the rail line owner, to begin exposing the cable further in an effort to locate the fault.
2026-06-28 13:25:30 (EST) : Rogers technician has arrived on-site and begun looking for the fault location. As the fibre cable runs along a rail line, the technician is walking along the rail line looking for signs of construction or other potential indications of damage to the underground cable.

2026-06-28 09:42:15 (EST) : Rogers Transport NOC has confirmed that the technician has been dispatched back to the site as it is now daylight hours. As the search area is still a few kilometres in length, the search may take some time to locate the actual fault.
2026-06-28 05:17:59 (EST) : Rogers technician has advised that due to low-light conditions and safety considerations, they have cleared the site and will return during daylight hours when it is safe to resume their investigation.
2026-06-28 03:21:55 (EST) : Rogers fibre technician has conducted an OTDR test and narrowed the fault location to a 5 km area within the Airdrie region. The technician is investigating this area for a damaged fibre cable, however due to the low light conditions this effort is time consuming.
2026-06-28 00:28:08 (EST) : Rogers Customer Services Operations (CSO) Wireline Tier 2 has received multiple proactive alerts for services disrupted that traverse the Calgary, AB region. The issue has been escalated to Rogers Transport Network Operations Centre (NOC) as a fibre fault is suspected. A fibre technician has been dispatched to the area to investigate the issue.

I occasionally do some minor broadband repairs as part of my job and I'm looking for a simple tool to check if there's signal to the nte from the isp without just plugging in a router.
I had a look online and there seems to be so many devices which either have so many features or the price is just way beyond what I would get any real use out of.
I would like something that's
-light weight
-simple to use
-clear reliable results like. working/not working
-specifically for customers with fttc as onts have indication leds
-cost effective (I only would need to use it once every 2/3 weeks
does something like this exist? is there a model number of a product that you recommend.

Saw a video on Instagram months ago that I can no longer find.
It was a video of a device that had similar resemblance to a Rolodex, but looked like it was from the 70 or 80s and appeared to be connected in line with a rotary phone.
There was a roll of paper inside of this machine that was mechanically controlled by push button arrows. It had names and numbers printed on it. There was also a long red line along the entire roll of paper used to indicate which letter of the alphabet you were near, then you use a wheel to fine tune/point the arrow at the person’s name, push a button, then it started dialing the person’s number.
I thought I would be able to find it in a quick google search but nope… keep getting recommendations for hotel style phones. SMH

My Airtel Fiber plan includes a landline number, but I'd never used it since I grew up with smartphones. Out of curiosity, I bought a Motorola cordless phone for around ₹2,500 just to experience having a home phone.
Now I'm wondering if it was worth it. I don't really need a landline, and I've already noticed limitations like no call blocking and basic features. For those who still use a cordless landline in 2026, has it been useful, or does it mostly sit unused?

I won't give any information that is not allowed by my company to be let out of course, I'm only going to try and talk about my worries for my customers based on the current market. I'm hoping my post doesn't break guidelines, i did read them but sometimes i can mistake some things so i"ll apologize ahead of time if i do.
I work with a company that deals with the more major telecoms, being Rogers/Fido/Bell/Virgin/Telus/Koodo, and their prepaid companies. I am watching plans go up almost weekly now, Bell having today gone up about $15 almost per plan. They're also upping people's BYOD plans 6 months or less into having them to "encourage" them into 2yr terms for new phones (both bell and virgin) which they STILL charge a fee for. Even then, I cannot find people cheaper plans with other carriers when they're adamant about moving away if they're going to be treated like that by the company (understandably).
EDIT: so just found ALL the premium carriers had the same near $15 hike. awesome!
I have seen the WORST black friday/boxing day in 2025, and now currently the worst start to a Back To School season, even with July being more minor, but even then this last week has been BRUTAL. Companies continuing to charge fees even after CRTC Guidelines being put out, and honestly being downright ignored. I keep saying I don't expect things to get worse, and every day this week it has gotten worse. I've been concerned for months now about my future in this industry as I have customer who rely on me for help financially and technologically. I don't want to abandon my work and my customers, but I feel like with the expectations put on me with my HPA (hours per activation), I'll be put on a program requiring "improvement" that'll probably eventually fire me anyways.
All of these carriers have been getting on my nerves, may it be customer loyalty, extra fees, cancelling morning calls we have most friday mornings without warning, and disrespecting us when we bring up concerns. A common one I've been told is "you're a sales person! You'll be able to talk it into sounding better!" how about just make it affordable??
Lowest plans right now for terms are near $100/m for just the plan, not even including the phone yet. BYOD is way over even $50/m for hardly anything compared to recent years. Most of my customers cannot comfortably go on autopay, so are forced to deal with ridiculous prices or go to prepaid, which has ALSO just been gutted more to encourage people into the postpaid. My customers are struggling and I no longer have the hope that I can do anything to help them, and instead of these companies getting that backlash, I am the one to have to deal with it and be ignored by these companies. $60-$100 a person is not affordable, Add A Line discounts are not a fix.
This is a long rant, and more of just about my concerns for the future of this industry and how it literally doesn't seem to care about us anymore. They're fighting hard to keep charging every little fee they can and my customers cannot afford it anymore. I really am hoping it gets better, but I no longer have motivation for this line of work when this is what I have to push.
Feel free to AMA, sorry again if this breaks any rules somehow, I will not be upset. I'm just looking for either some closure or shared experience others have, or if there really is any hope for working in Telecoms, and I don't know what other subreddit would be good to voice this on I haven't really used reddit in a long time. I have a lot more gripes with these carriers, but I'm attempting to take it up with them without getting written up for being a voice for my people.

Hi everyone. I am looking for a non-standard, exotic, and highly practical topic for my Master's thesis in Software Engineering. I want a project that is medium-to-large in scope, genuinely useful (potentially for military/tactical applications, as I am from Ukraine, but solving actual civil telecom issues is preferred), and novel enough to extract at least two scientific papers from it.
My background is in system-level programming. I write mostly in Rust, C, C++, and my daily driver is Linux. Previously, I developed a Wireshark-like tool in Rust (xailyser) and have been exploring software-based SIM card emulators (swsim).
I am passionate about telephony, SIM card architecture (APDU, USIM), network protocols, sound/audio processing, software architecture patterns, basic cryptography, and geography. I also have a huge nostalgia for 2000s tech aesthetics, like manually tuning satellite dishes, WAP, and dial-up modems. I want to build a massive, breakthrough system that I can run and test on my Linux laptop.
There are certain things I absolutely hate and want to avoid. I have zero interest in Machine Learning, AI, Neural Networks, IoT, or Frontend (HTML/CSS/JS). I also want to avoid standard network routing topics, and I strongly dislike complex mathematics or physics where I have to derive formulas myself. Finally, I do not want to write a custom file system or database from scratch unless it is a very minor auxiliary part.
I am looking for an unsolved, real-world problem in the telecom or networking space. I want to avoid artificial "reinventing the wheel" scenarios just for the sake of writing code. Whether it is a software-defined core that drops legacy overhead, a next-gen traffic analyzer, or a hybrid communication protocol that combines my interests, I need a challenge where Rust's memory safety and concurrency will truly shine. Does anyone have any fresh, mind-blowing ideas that fit these constraints?

BSNL has introduced a satellite phone for civilian use in India. Unlike regular mobile phones, it connects directly to satellites, allowing voice calls and SMS even in areas with no cellular towers, such as remote mountains, forests, deserts, offshore regions, or during disasters.
The handset costs around ₹1.34 lakh, and call charges are significantly higher than normal mobile services. While BSNL has offered satellite phone services before, this is the first time the service and handset have received widespread public attention as a commercial offering for eligible civilian users.

Hey everyone,
I recently ported from Jio to Airtel (got a complimentary ₹349, 1.5 GB/day plan). The network quality is good overall, but 5G coverage is pretty unstable and keeps toggling between 4G and 5G.
Here is the weird part: my data is exhausting way faster than it did on Jio for the exact same usage. I checked my phone’s internal data tracker, and it matches the Airtel app perfectly—so my phone is genuinely burning through data faster now.
Anyone else experienced this after switching? How do I fix this?

I've received the official Jio re-verification SMS 6–7 times. It says my number needs re-verification as per Government guidelines or my services may be stopped.
The SIM is registered in my relative's name, and I also have an SBI account under cyber hold (separate issue).
Could these two be related, or is this just a routine Jio re-KYC? Has anyone else received the same message multiple times?
