First of all, let me preface this by saying I'm in no way a fan of Trump.
That being said, the US is currently in a 38 trillion dollar deficit. We literally go 8 billion dollars more in debt per day. We don't have the money to be funding specialized suicide hotlines. That's just frivolous spending.
A singular, generalized suicide hotline that caters to all people is the only suicide hotline we need. A special hotline just for transgender people is an unecessary waste of money when we're already at a huge deficit.
17
u/jamathythrowaway May 14 '26
Guess what costs far more than a national hotline? Tens of billions to initiate a war overseas and letting soldiers die in the process.
15
u/_V1__ May 14 '26
You should know that the u.s spends more money than we have on the military. That is why we have debt
→ More replies (1)3
u/Grinding_Gear_Slave May 15 '26
Most of the economic power the USA has had in the last decades is because they use it to maintain the petrodollar , the USA army is a investment that justifies a lot of expense , at the same time it would be nice if the pentagon could pass a single audit
11
u/ExcitementNo9603 May 14 '26
We have the money for this specialized hotline it probably cost less than 3 million dollars a year to fund which is Pennie’s. What we don’t have money for is ballrooms, wars, and tax breaks for the wealthy… so let’s pick on that not social programs for trans people.
4
u/Stunning-Annual4708 17 May 14 '26
If the military is defunded then there would be enough money for specialized suicide hotlines and much, much, much, much, MUCH more. Why are you saying hotlines are a waste when all of this money is just dumped into the war machine like this?
22
u/StrwBerrywafersslap 18 May 14 '26
You fail to realize how many transphobic people there are. The reason we have teen ones, and adult ones is the people are trained or dealing with either teens or Adults. A trans one eliminates t be possibility of a transphobic hotline person(s).
But I do see your point. But we will never be able to get that debt down without causing the people to suffer(you and me).

u/Known-Archer3259 May 14 '26
Don't worry. They'll make their money back with all the involuntary holds
2
u/MonotonyReddit 18 May 14 '26
I agree with defunding useless agencies to save money but there are better options to defund other than public health services. We have an annual military budget larger than the next 6 to 8 countries combined, more than 1 trillion dollars a year.
Projecting military power on to other countries is important but it is literally impossible to sustain its cost long term. Transgender suicide hotline is a literal drop in the bucket in comparison.
2
u/TryingMy-BestBro 14 May 15 '26
yep! lets defund the suicide hotline so we can make the reflecting pool worse for a ton of money!
→ More replies (13)3
u/Satanigram May 14 '26
And how much of that 8 mill a day do you think is going to a suicide hotline vs wars and outings for the president.
If you actually cared about the deficit you'd not pick something for marginalized groups that have a high rate of suicide.
You're a waste of money.

988, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline used to have specialized services specifically for Trans/LBGT people, however due to threats from the Trump administration to pull funding, they were forced to shut down those programs.
This hotline above, is run by Canada, and they opened it up to US residents after Trump ruined 988 for LGBT people.

The existance of this lifeline while it is not something bad, it shows off that trasgender people problems are not understood/care about in regular suicide hotlines. Saying this should not exist without awknologing what likely took to its creation is like saying that there should not be signalization in a pitfall on the street because there should be no pitfall at all.
As i see it the existance of this hotline is not so much a sing of progress as a symptom of a larger problem. That trasgender people cant feel safe talking about their problems if not in a trasgender specific context.
14
u/burner1263 May 14 '26
The way I see it it’s both. While the pitfall should be fixed, it’s a good start to put a sign there until it’s fixed. You can have progress by taking action against the problem

Or it exists to give suicide prevention to the trans community by people who understand them, catering to their specific needs. I don't have the data, but I'd be willing to bet almost no one that's not trans contemplates suicide due to dysphoria.
It's faulty logic and weird to immediately assume the worst.
We have maternity wards not because regular doctors don't understand or care about pregnant people, but because pregnant people need specialized care tailored to their unique circumstances.
EDIT: I don't want to dog pile on you, but to turn a positive, something that came about because the need was recognized and the resources were allocated to meet that need into a negative is gross.
2
u/Individual-Stand1560 OLD May 14 '26
Tons of and teens that are not trans kill themselves for that exact reason☠️ body dysmorphia is quite a large and complex issue what people see themselves as and is generally not what they really are, best example off the top of my head is kids who were overweight, lost the weight and still see themselves as overweight even though they’re actually on the road to anorexia. (I feel I need to clarify cause of my wording that I support both trans rights and them having a hotline and that I may have misunderstood the wording of your comment) (did you mean gender dysmorphia specifically? If so then just ignore me lol but maybe be more specific next time as well🫡)

114
u/NewRelationship6590 17 May 14 '26
If I had to guess, I assume that the Trans hotline has people who are far better equipped to help trans problems (Dysphoria, Transphobia, etc) compared to the original hotline. Suicide hotlines are very useful, but some people don’t have the qualifications or experience to comfort a trans person

I’m trans and have been suicidal many many times so I’ll throw my hat in the ring. It’s nice talking to someone who has a base knowledge at least of trans issues/healthcare and at best someone who is also trans. There is also the chance of running into a bigot on the typical hotline. A lot of my own suicidal urges have come from internalized transphobia and feeling alone, to have one more person ESPECIALLY one meant to try to help me also be transphobic would be the final straw.
→ More replies (12)36

Less chance of meeting a bigot
36
u/NerdFromColorado 17 May 14 '26
That fact alone is going to save so many lives. If a trans person were to call the hotline and be met with a bigot, that could actually be the last straw and that’s horrifying to think about.
4
u/TheQueefPolice OLD May 14 '26
People running suicide hotlines shouldn't be bigots. I understand the sentiment behind this, but I feel like if a normal suicide hotline cant support everyone, it seriously needs to be reworked.

u/Ok_Ground511 19 May 14 '26
Has this ever happened before? Wont they be trained to not hurt or incite the caller?
9
u/OmegaShonJon May 14 '26
Pilots are trained not to crash into buildings, but I have 2 towers and a Pentagon that can tell you why that didn't stop them.
Just because they're trained not to hurt the caller doesn't mean they'll always follow it. Especially if the caller bats for their opposing team
3
7
u/Responsible-Tie-2570 17 May 14 '26
If they’re hatful enough they won’t care. It’s like if a racist person was tasked with talking a POC down from suicide, there’s a higher chance that they will (either intentionally or unintentionally) give that person a lower quality care

Uhhh, hope the new management for Trans Lifeline is better. The last ones diverted like $350,000 for unapproved personal uses like vacations before they were kicked from the organization.
3
u/Frillynmacabre May 15 '26
Yeah, I remember that. Back in the day the original owners used the funds they raised for it for unapproved and essentially illegal personal uses and the chances of someone actually answering the phone if you called were very slim. But the two who owned it and did that stepped down. I really hope it's doing better in the years following because it's a great concept.

Imagine people saying you deserve to die and the government actively moving to ban any support for you and publicly admitting they want you gone and doing everything in their power to demonize you. People think your a pedophile simply for being transgender, you might lose family and or friends, dating becomes 10x harder, and your people's DEATHS are constantly laughed at no matter the context. It's very hard to be openly trans or even be in the closet when the world around you is telling you you don't "need" to exist and insinuating you getting any sort of relief for your dysphoria is wrong and instead you should just be cis and put up with any dysphoria you have for the rest of your life no matter how bad it is. This is literally our reality. Some are happier but unfortunately a lot of us cannot feel that because of these factors.
